Today's column deals with your heart and how to keep it healthy. From the earliest times more has been written about the heart than any other organ in the body - probably because it was once considered to be the centre of emotions. Today we know that the heart is a muscular pump designed to pump blood and therefore oxygen throughout the body. When we consider t’nat it pumps steadily at 70 or more beats per minute for a full life time, it is clear that the heart is a very marvellous and efficient pump indeed. <0n the other side of the coin, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Canada. Many of the organs in our bodies come in pairs and have back-up systems. For example, we have two kidneys and if one is injured or quits, the other continues to work to keep us alive and healthy. The heart however, has no such back-up system. When the heart stops, death soon results. It is then obvious that we need to protect our hearts from disease and injury. Several factors should be considered in order to keep our hearts healthy. ■ 1. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE - High blood pressure requires the heart to work harder to push blood throughout the body. When high blood pressure goes untreated, eventually the heart becomes unable to cope with the extra work load and starts to fail. In most cases we still don't know what causes high blood pressure. We do know however, that it can be easily treated and controlled. it is important that you know your own blood pressure and that you have it checked periodically by your doctor. if you are found to have high blood pressure, a number of simple measures such as dietary changes are often enough to keep it under control. If these aren't enough, medication can be used. In any event, high blodd pressure should not be ignored. 2. CIGARETTE SMOKE - Cigarette smoke, your own or that of someone else (second hand smoke) is harmful to the heart. Firstly, the nicotine in cigarette smoke affects the rhythm of the heart or it's ability to pump in a regular and consistent fashion. Secondly, carbon monoxide in smoke is readily taken up by red blood cells. These cells are normally used to transport oxygen to body organs and tissues. With carbon monoxide now replacing the oxygen in the red bjbod cells, the heart has to work harder to send an adequate level of oxygen to body organs and tissues. 3. HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES If your diet includes too much animal fat, there is a tendency for that fat to become deposited on the walls of the arteries. The arteries are then said to have become "hardened" and are narrowed. This then reduces the flow of blood throught the arteries to the tissues that need them. This is particularly harmful for coronary arteries which supply oxygen to the heart muscle. Once they start to narrow from fatty deposits, angina or chest pain results. if the coronary arteries close completely, a heart attack results. 4. EXCESSIVE WEIGHT - with every pound of excessive weight gain the heart has to work harder to distribute blood and oxygen to the "extra" tissues. Basically, the long term effect is the same as high blood pressure. An extra workload is placed on the heart. 5. EXERCISE - as mentioned, the heart is a muscle and requires regular and frequent exercise to stay fit. If you don't exercise, your heart muscle can become "flabby". When you are required to make unusual physical efforts such as trying to push a car out of a snow drift, the "flabby" unfit heart muscle can seize up and stop working. All the above "risk" factors can be avoided. In review, things we can do for our hearts include: Checking for high blood pressure. If you have it, make sure you follow recommendations regarding treatment. Avoiding cigarette smoke - your own or someone else's. Eating a well balanced diet with a minimal amount of animal fat. Keeping your body weight within a "healthy" range. Exercising regularly. Look after your heart and it will look after you, ensuring a long and healthy life. If you require any further information on any of the above points, please contact your local health unit or your family physician.
