Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. Vol 1-27 PEOPLE CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE September 24, 2003 Contamination Clean-up Complete Excavation of contaminated soil has been completed on Magrath’s main street at the site where a tractor dealership and later a Ford dealership used to be located and most recently the “Gas Can”. The “soil remediation” work was required by a potential tenant for the property and was done by Sunshine Excavation, says Boyd Woodruff, resident manager for Tom Carter Rentals, the company that owns the property. It is not clear how the soil became contaminated, says Woodruff. Although there is some speculation it was caused by gas pumps at the Ford dealership owned and operated by Tom Carter’s grandfather and later father, it could also have happened previous to the family’s purchase of the property when the tractor dealership was operating and environmental concerns were almost nonexistent. Woodruff declined to name the potential tenant for property because negotiations are still ongoing. He said, however, that it was unlikely any development would take place before the spring. The soil, about 1,100 yards or 110 truck loads, was hauled to the town’s landfill site where it will be treated, says the town’s chief administrative officer, Ron Williams. Reclaiming the soil will be a simple matter of aeration, he said. “Every few weeks somebody has to go in and turn it over,” he explained. The cost of the soil removal and reclamation was entirely the responsibility of Sunshine Excavation removing contaminated soil on September 18, 2003- the landowner, he said. ♦ Crossing the Border Yet another sign of winter’s approach is the annual changing of hours at the Del Bonita border crossing. The new hours, effective mid September until the beginning of June, are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the summer, the border is open from 8 a.m. until 9 pm. The Del Bonita crossing, which also boasts a small airport open in the summer and the winter (as weather allows), has been operating since 1939- Latest traffic figures from the crossing show that a total of 17,409 vehicles, including commercials trucks and passenger vehicles used that crossing in the last year. That amounts to 38,073 people, says Gordon Luchia communications manager for Canada Customs and Revenue in southern Alberta. That compares to recent statistics which show 308,000 cars a year crossing the busier Coutts border about 60 km to the east. There would be a total of almost 562 thousand travelers in those vehicles, says Luchia. Not surprisingly, traffic is a bit more hectic in the summer at Del Bonita which recorded 10,284 crossings from April to September and 7,125 from October to March. A familiar face for many at the crossing is Barb Juhasz who has been working there since 1977. There is also one other person employed at the crossing. Although it is a small facility, it has seen a wide representative of travelers, say Juhasz who keeps a wall map with pin marks to indicate where visitors have come from. The crossing has welcomed residents from every state in the U.S., except five. Those states are: Louisiana, New Jersey, Delaware, Maine < MAGRATH Published weekly on Wednesdays by Keyline Communications Box 179, Magrath, AB TOK 1J0 Ph: 758-6911 • Fx: 758-3661 email magrathnews@telus.net Ad deadline is Friday at 5pm and may be dropped off at the Magrath Pharmacy or at Keyline Communications’ office at 14 Centennial Place, Duane & Carma Thomson’s home. Please support them! and Rhode Island. The crossing has also seen a fair number of international travelers coming from such far flung locations as England, Norway, Sweden, United Emirates, Japan, Iceland, France, Belgium, Norway, Australia, Iceland and Tasmania. Juhasz remembers how employees at the border crossing helped equip eight southern Alberta schools with computers, printers or VCRs in the early 90’s when favourable exchange rates encouraged cross-border shopping expeditions. Buttrey’s Grocery, no longer in operation, in Cutbank Montana offered to donate a piece of equipment to a local school for every $150,000 in grocery receipts. Shoppers returning to Canada dropped their receipts off with die custom agents so they could be collected and returned to the store. Juhasz urges those who would like to read more about the border crossing to consult the history book put out by the Del Bonita Historical Society in 1981. It is called Heritage of the High Country: a history of Del Bonita and surrounding districts and is available at local libraries. ♦ — Magrath Irrigation District" Public Notice Attention: All irrigators & water users. Kristine Alston returns as president with a full compliment of helpful, energetic council members anxious to serve the students and staff at the Magrath Jr./Sr. High School. The first activity planned by the School Council is the annual Back to School Breakfast for students and staff. The Breakfast will be held on Thursday, September 25 from about 8:15 am until everyone has had some pancakes. Even though this is a fun event, students need to be reminded that it is a regular school day and as soon as they have finished their breakfast, they need to go to class. The Striving for Excellence Program that began last spring will continue this fall. Students will be recognized for excellence in attendance and effort. It should be a lot of firn to see what kinds of prizes the School Council can come up with this year. Magrath School is full of exceptional students and Council was surprised at how many students qualified for awards last year. It would be very satisfying to be able to recognize as many or more students this year. Now is the time to begin preparing for the spring Showcase of Talent. School Council hopes to make this art show an annual affair. All forms of creativity will be accepted for the show. Last year’s show was a huge success with a wide variety of arts and crafts from both the school and community on display. Start planning now to show your best work to the community at this fun event. Joan Woolf is the council member overseeing the plans for Grad 2004. Her committee will be calling a meeting in late October for all grads and their parents to begin planning for 2004 graduation festivities. Watch for announcements and start thinking about what kind of fun can be planned for this year’s graduating class!! It is difficult to report on school activities without mentioning basketball season. The School Council plans to run the concession again this year for basketball home games. Remember the taco salads and scones from last season and count on just as tasty, if not better treats this year. School Council meets once a month and is always interested in hearing from people in the community who have comments or concerns about Magrath High School. The next meeting is planned for October 23,2003 - 3:30 pm. ♦ ^Magrath Curling Club ______ Notice of Annual Meeting______ Meeting to be held on TUesday, September 30, 2003 at the Magrath Curling Club, at 7:30 pm. Everyone that was in elementary school looked forward to going to jr. high school because that was the other building, where all the mysterious big kid things happened. When Sadie Hawkins occurred in the fall, there was a Sadie Hawkins race which was the highlight of the afternoon of the school day. As I recall, all the boys were given a one minute head start and then the girls would go and catch them. They didn’t have to wrestle them to the ground, they just had to get a firm grip on them. You weren’t supposed to leave the school yard so of course it was just like shooting fish in a barrel - just run a person until they were ragged and they colapsed and then they were fairly easy to capture. But I did not realize that part of the idea was to get caught. I climbed up into the top of a tree on a branch that was about an inch and a 1/4 in diameter. I was a very slight build and was the last one to be caught. They had declared the race over and then everybody said, “But there’s one up in the tree that looks like an owl.” So they sent one of the most athletic, the most beautiful as far as that goes, girls in the school. She went up and grabbed me by the ankle and of course then I was caught and the race was officially over. Every boy in the school had been run ragged. This was not the dating process for the dance later that night, it was just a sort of wild mayham. Gean (Keeler) Wheeler remembers . I went to school in the second school house that Magrath had, after the first one burned down. My folks lived on the farm (about 4 1/2 miles out of town) and my mother wanted me to be sure and go to school in town where there was a class for each grade instead of a mixture of all grades. I would have had to go on a horse or something like that to the little country school. I went in and stayed during the week at my grandmother Jensen’s. That was the house right across from the school where I used to live. I loved school. It was fun. I loved to read. I used to read alot and more than school work. It was stories. I bet I read a book a day sometimes. My parents would come and pick me up and go back to the farm on the weekends. I loved staying at grandmother’s. She was a good grandmother. (For discipline) you did what you were told - PERIOD! There was a strap but I never got the strap because I was scared to death. I tell you, I didn’t do anything that I knew was wrong. ♦ Thank you to those people who were willing to share some memories. We would like to hear from more of you and we’ll print "SchoolMemories" again at a later date. Magrath News School Student Election Results Junior High School student elections were held recently and after many promises of votes and candy “bribes” being offered, the final results are in. Traditionally the Jr. High has a few dances during the year and a few other activities. Vice Pricipal Darryl Christensen indicated that it really depends on the group as to how much they do, but the High School Council tends to have more activities to plan. Good luck to these two councils and hope they have a fun year! ♦ As school comenses in September, there are always a few changes in the enrollment numbers as the month rolls on. The numbers this year for both schools are very close to last years enrollment. The count as of mid September for the elementary school is 329 registered students. Last years count was at 335 students. The Jr./Sr. High School has an enrollment for this year of 337 students. ♦ Canadian Security Systems Ltd, Defending your home or business Against Crime Devonshire Realty Inc. Warnock took over the Magrath position on Dec. 30, 2002 after 18 years in Turin where she was also postmaster. She replaced Ila Tuff who retired last August after 20 years at the Magrath facility. E-mail is fast and convenient, but people still love to get letters, says Warnock. “E-mail just doesn’t replace getting a regular letter for a lot of people,” she says. The post office business has changed a lot in recent years, she agrees though. But where the number of letters and cards being posted has dropped, parcel traffic has increased thanks to the phenomenal success of the internet and online trading companies like eBay. When Warnock left her postmaster’s job in the smaller Turin post office to come here she thought she would be among strangers. As it turns out though, there were many familiar faces in the community and as she has gotten to know people she has discovered all sorts of connections whether it be old friends from her teen years, friends of friends or relatives of friends The three staff members at the Magrath post office. (L-R) Karen Bourne -16yrs; Moira Warnock -18 yrs; Sue Gaff -10 yrs. from the Picture Butte area. Now Magrath is starting to feel like home. She was lucky too in that she has an excellent hardworking staff that helped smooth the transition, she says. There are normally four people working at the Magrath post office, but one part-time position for 11 hours a week has become vacant and is now being advertised, she says. Warnock was born in Lethbridge and grew up in Picture Butte. She is married to Bryan and has two sons aged 22 and 23. She and her husband have recently purchased an acreage about 10 kilometres south of Lethbridge on Highway 508 from where he will operate his Bobcat business. ♦ 'Wakeup 'With Make-up! Part of their preparations include holding two Saturday workshops - one for directing and one for choreography. Leanne Sabey, President of the society, has attended these workshops offered by Theatre Alberta and held in Calgary and Edmonton, with the intention of teaching the some workshops here in Magrath. The goal, of course, is to be able to find interested members of the community to help direct and choreograph upcoming productions. “We realize that asking people to direct a play alone or to choreograph an entire show can be overwhelming,’’ said Sabey, “so what we want are willing individuals who would like to co-direct with another, or people who would consider choreographing just one or two numbers.” The Society hopes that by offering these workshops to the community, interested people will feel more confident to participate. Sabey added, “I think people will be surprised at how simple and fun both are. I came out of the choreography class not knowing any more dance than when I got there, which was very little.” She went on to say that the class focuses more on movement than dance. “I walked away thinking, ‘I can do that!’ ” For more information or if you would like to attend one or both of these workshops, please call Leanne Sabey at 758-6846 by October 4th and she will choose a date that works best for everyone. ♦ Coupon Any large pizza i Expires: September 2004 1I SASH Pizza Kitchen 758-3160 OR 758-3334 For your convenience, ive now accept Interact.
