Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. Diamond Willow, 25 Years Young “I love it!”, was the response Mabie Schmunk gave when asked how she likes living at the Diamond Willow Terrace Lodge. She has lived there for 2 1/2 years and lias found it a wonderful place to live and a great place to enjoy and make friendships. The “Diamond Willow” lias been home to hundreds of members of the community for 25 years and it is presently home to 39 people, most from Magralli but some from other areas. On Saturday, Oct. 18th, 2003, an Open House was held to celebrate it's 25 years of seiwing the seniors of Magratli. The meeting room was bustling and busy for over 2 horns as family and community members participated in the celebration with the people who call the Diamond Willow Lodge home. Charlotte Anderson, Manager for the past 18 years, along with Kathy Blackmer, the Activities Coordinator, Left: Cordon (Mac) Innis signs in at the guest registry while residents Sarah Hoare and Mabie Schmunk welcome visitors. Hot tom: Resident Verna Forsyth (left) and Kathy Blackmer, the Activities Coordinator, enjoy the Anniversar)’ celebrations. planned the event, got the residents involved being greeters, guest book attendants, providing entertainment and encouraging all to visit and have a good time. Wonderful refreshments, decorations and almost 30 door prizes added to the festive occasion. Almost 150 people signed the guest book and enjoyed visiting with these fine people. During die 25th Anniversary Open House, a few of the residents shared their feelings widi Magrath News about living at the Diamond Willow. Garth Dahl reckons, “Eveiyone who’s my age should live IN CONCERT Jericho Road <& CU'iZe.QsM CARDSTON: November 1st, 7 p.m. - Civic Center LETHBRIDGE: November 4th, 7 p.m. - U of L Theater For more information call Cardston Book Shop 653-4222 Tickets $15 Available at the Magrath Pharmacy LIMITED SEATING GET YOUR TICKETS SOON! here.” He thinks it’s a great place. Sarah Hoare has lived there for 10 or 11 years. Her husband Stan recently passed away, but they moved to the Diamond Willow when his eyesight began failing. Sarah says, “It’s really nice.” She enjoys living downstairs and visiting with her friends there. Verna Forsyth has called the Diamond Willow home for 4 years. She moved there with her husband Duane. Since then, he moved to the hospital and has passed away. Verna remains very active in her interests and hobbies. Verna says of her home, “People that live here are very nice and kind to each other. We’re like a family and watch out for each other.” She enjoys the music that other residents share and she enjoys the people from die community and school children who come and perform for their entertainment. Vema sajs that she has spoken widi people who have waited quite awhile before deciding to move to the Lodge. When they finally do move in, they wish they had done it a long time before. Vema says tiiat some have commented, “It’s die closest diing to Heaven diat diere is!” Vema agrees, “It’s been good. The workers really care about you. Charlotte is tender hearted and cares about die people.” Charlotte agrees that she loves the people. “They are family!” She also indicates that the staff are a vital part of the organization. There are 4 full time and 14 part or casual staff. Widiout the caring staff that she has, her job would be a difficult one. It appears that the only downside mentioned by some who live at the Diamond Willow are the size of die rooms. “The rooms are quite small. I guess they’re ok for someone who just wants to sit, but I have too many projects and not enough room. Other than that, it’s about perfect here,” said one resident. In Magrath 26 years ago and before, when a Senior was ready to move out of their own home, their choices were to move in with family or go to one of the lodges at Cardston, Raymond or Ledibridge. What a Leah Hamilton took charge of the scissors at the official opening of Diamond-Willow Terrace Lodge on Nov. 17, 1978. Aged 92 at the time, Leah was assisted byfack Rasmussen, left, and M.L.A. John Thompson. blessing it is to have our own Lodge in our own community. People then have the option of staying amongst familiar surroundings, close to family and long time friends. John Thompson w7as die MLA back in 1978 when the Lodge opened. He admits diat he did a lot of lobbying with the government to get this residence built. At that time, communities die size of Magrath were not even considered candidates for a project such as this. We were fortunate enough to receive the building. Thompson says, “I was very pleased to be down there the odier afternoon and see it so successful”. The government definitely did something right 25 years ago with the opening of the Diamond Willow Terrace Lodge. ♦ I w f MAGRATS AC SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING November 12, 2003 - 8:00 pm All interested individuals are encouraged to attend and share any concerns or ideas they may have. By Lyle Lester Fish & Wildlife Officer Recent cooler temperatures have caused the leaves to turn colour and fall to the ground giving the land a scent unique to the autumn. A wide variety of migrating birds have been seen passing through our community, and hearing those big flights of geese arriving from the north are all signalling the coming of winter. A big part of our fall is the hunting season and it is rapidly moving into full swing. The cooler temperatures have more hunters afield in search of their quarry. The Game Bird season is well underway with healthy populations of pheasant, grouse and partridge providing lots of sporting action for upland bird hunters. Cooler northern winds have brought down good numbers of migrating geese and ducks with ample opportunity to hunt both. Big game season is now open for bow hunters and rifle season for Antelope started October 20th with deer rifle season opening in November in Wildlife Management units 108,110 and 300 (the areas around Magrath and Cardston). Folks wanting to hunt with a rifle now can do so next to the mountains in Wildlife Management Units 300 and 400 if the have the correct licence (c.g. elk). Before heading out on a hunting trip please take the time to look at the regulations that are available Holland Insurance (Magrath) LTD. __________________ AGENTS FOR__________________ I NG At) HHteS You can reduce the risk of injury to yourself and your family by properly adjusting your headrest. If you do not understand the regulations or have concerns please do not hesitate to contact the Cardston Fish and Wildlife Office (403-653-5158). It is much better to get regulation questions answered before the hunt as this avoids all kinds of problems in the field than can detract from the hunt. Most of the land within our County is privately owned or occupied so please be sure to contact the landholder before going on any lands to hunt. This will ensure you have an enjoyable hunt without the worry of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. County maps with landowner's names on them can be purchased from the County of Cardston Office and are a great asset in determining who own's what land. Fish and Wildfife Officers will be conducting compliance checks throughout the fall. Some of these checks will involve Hunter Check Stations/Roadblocks in areas where hunting is occurring. If you are checked hunting the Officers will be asking to see the appropriate licences, check game taken and ensure firearms are being safely transported. The officer may collect more specific information on your game including taking of measurements for scientific purposes. Individuals who notice hunting activity that appears to be illegal or questionable are encouraged to contact the Cardston Fish & Wildlife Office or the REPORT-A-POACHER hotline by calling toll free to 1-800-642-3800. This toll free line operates 24 hours a day throughout the year. An operator will take your information and pass it on to the nearest Fish & Wildlife Officer. Persons providing information that leads to the laying of a charge are eligible for a reward and you can remain anonymous. It is the information we want not necessarily your name. Staff at the Cardston Fish & Wildlife Office hope you have an enjoyable safe hunt and encourage you to contact us if you have any questions pertaining to hunting or any other Fish & Wildlife matter. We are here to serve you. ♦ T-Shirts! Brook Harker* Joseph Calvin Alston became a Coder First Class on convoy duty in the North Atlantic during World War n, responsible for decoding the encrypted messages received on board ship. When he went to Calgary to join the Air Force in October 1943, a friend pointed out that as short as Cal was (5’ 6” tall), he was likely destined to J become a tail gunner—and tail gunners did not live very long. So, despite being 800 miles from the nearest ocean, Cal joined the navy. Cal helped to man one of die little ‘sub-chasers’—a Castle Class corvette called the Avalon (later Copper Cliff), sailing from St. John, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland. A typical corvette might be 205 feet long by thirty-three feet wide and displace 950 tons of water. Originally designed for a crew of forty-two officers and men, with the addition of new armament and equipment, this might grow to eighty or even 100 men. When corvettes first went into service, no one was sure how they would perform at sea. Yet they quickly became, it is said, “the backbone of the North Atlantic convoy escort system.” The ship was “dumpy, rolled dangerously, and seemed to spend as much time under the waves as on top of them.” But the corvette kept going in all types of weather and could turn a tighter circle than an enemy U-boat The weather in the North Atlantic might quickly offset the monotony of routine convoy duty and be almost as threatening as the U-boats. Alston said the waves in the North Atlantic were as high as the 100 foot grain elevators back home. And once a corvette crested such a wave, it would drop like a rock. Cal considered the Irish Sea (between Ireland and England) to be the most dangerous of waters—being “full of wolf packs.” In a letter home late in the war, he told his mother that the seas along the west coast of the British Isles were “swarming with subs,” and that in order to keep the U-boats at bay, “the depth charges are really humming.” Despite such efforts, on several convoys he was escorting, vessels were sunk by the enemy. When Cal Alston began serving in the navy he did not expect to ever come back. But he safely spent 141 days on the high seas, making twelve crossings of the Atlantic. As a chronicler of the town’s veterans, Alston used to say that Magrath sent more of her youth to war on a per capita basis (241 men and 3 women) titan most other communities in the West. In the end, sixteen soldiers (half army, half airmen) would lose their lives. ❖ • Brook Harker is writing a biography based on the diary of bis uncle Blair M.
