IM AGR ATH I NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents Wednesday August 4, 1993 I've really enjoyed these past few months as editor and would like to thank all those that have contributed in any way. I'm pleased to introduce Susan Loose as the new editor and hope that you'll give her all the support that you given me. Thanks again - Wendy Balderson Hi! If you don't know me I'll tell you a little bit about myself. I'm married to Michael Loose who was also raised in Magrath. We have four sons: Jeremy 17, Brad 13, Josh 11, and Adam 6. I graduated from Magrath High in 1977, and worked off and on through these past years in the dental field. I am the daughter of Dan and Arlene Gruninger, sister of Michelle and Ernie Gruninger, and granddaughter of Olive Gruninger. I'm so excited to be given the opportunity to be the editor of the Magrath Store News paper. I’m really going to enjoy working with you, and doing my part contributing to the community by informing everyone of the events happening in and around our community, as well as promoting community spirit and unity that is so wonderful to have in a community like ours. I sincerely invite you to drop by or give me a call about any events that is happening or has happened in our community and surrounding area, no matter how insignificant you may feel it is. Everyone enjoys hearing about it. Weddings, births, visitors, announcements, clubs and church news etc. - there is no charge for any information that is not a money making proposition. Please give me a call at the News Office anytime at 7586377 - I'd love to hear from you. Susan Loose The baseball season is over for the South Chief All Star teams. Insect repellent is invaluable in making an otherwise bug-laden, bugswatting outdoor event a relaxed enjoyable one! Insect repellent must, however, be used with care. DEET, the most common chemical in mosquito repellents has, on rare occasions, caused toxic reactions in children. Parents and caregivers need to be aware of this and take precautions to "safely chase the bugs away". Chinook Health Unit recommends that if you use mosquito sprays and lotions: -make sure the DEET concentration of the product is less than 50%. -spray and apply the product lightly to . exposed skin. This will last 4-8 hours. Do not re-apply. -never use repellents on sores, wounds, or irritated skin. -wear long sleeves and pants, -spray clothing rather than skin, -be sure to wash off repellent after coming in from outside. For more information, contact the Chinook Health Unit. by Stasha Donahue Health Promotion Coordinator NOTICE: I need an original picture of the Harker, Head Store (early 1900's) and of the Deseret Agriculture Society Board (about 1905). CHINOOK HEALTH UNIT NEWS RELEASE "Don't Leave Home Without It!" At last you have accomplished your life-long dream! You have enough money to visit the Taj Mahal. As a little child you discovered a picture in an old album of your grandfather's. He visited there in the early 1930's. Throughout your teen years you read and fantasized how you would one day follow in his footsteps. One month before the long awaited departure day, reality is forced upon you. You realize you need a certificate stating you have been immunized against several diseases before you can enter this foreign country. Firstly, you didn't know that some countries require protection from some diseases. Secondly, you forgot about the dreaded polio, tetanus, and rabies which are long gone in Canada but are still alive and well in several areas of the world. You arrive breathless at the Health Unit just five minutes before closing only to discover the nurse has several things she needs to discuss with you. One little needle just won't do! Who ever heard of Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis? Oh dear! The nurse reminds you that the drinking water in the area may not be safe. You may need to consider brushing your teeth with beer. Oh yes, watch what you eat. Is it safe? Have you considered what you pack in your suitcase (Besides shorts, a sun hat, and sunscreen). Take something for diarrhea, antibiotics, and maybe a kit containing syringes and other paraphernalia for medical treatment. Don't forget your own toilet paper, face cloth, and soap. Last, but not least, remember we live in a small world. That handsome guy may be carrying unwanted baggage - the deadly disease "AIDS". It's better to be safe than sorry - you can't undo a deadly disease. As for the rest of us, who may be planning a trip to the beach or mountains, remember "The Great Summer Cover Up Caper". Screen is keen! Always use a sunscreen of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Tees are trendy! When outdoors, "cover up" with protective clothing such as T-shirts, sun hats, and pants. 10 to 3 - not cool! The sun's rays are strongest between 10:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m. Seek out shade. Even on the beach and in the mountains, make sure the water supply is safe. Never drink out of rivers, lakes, springs, or unknown wells. Beaver Fever (Giardia) lives there. Safeguard yourself and your children from Hamburger Disease by making sure your meat is well cooked. Keep your food in coolers. We don't want to spoil your vacation, we want it to be as enjoyable as possible. Remember when you plan your vacation to contact your local Health Unit to get all the scoop for your health needs. Our travel books will help you stay healthy and safe, not only during, but after your vacation!
