You eat, you drink, you wash your face." - Enrico CarusoCARDSTON SCHOOL DIVISION BOARD MEETING REPORT . MARCH 24, 1992 STRIKE A POSSIBILITY - Misunderstanding of two major clauses in the proposed collective agreement between teachers and me Southern Alberta Schoo) Authorities Association may lead to strike action. While the two clauses have never formally been discussed a the table, the interpretation place upon them by the two parties vary considerably. For clarification, the Board has made the following statement: MANAGEMENT CLAUSE - the proposed clause Indicates that the School Board Is appointed by the School Act and the Labor Code to be responsible for the management of the schools. This is to be done within the limits of the collective agreement (present and future) as well as the limitation Imposed by the School Act and Labor Code. The Board Is not Intending to Impose extra-curricular assignments nor do they wish to I lmlt items that may be brought to the negotiations and placed on the table as items to be considered when the collective agreement is negot1ated. "ACTIVELY RENDERING SERVICE" - the clause here is referring strictly to .benefits for teachers who are not under contract because of maternity leave, professional or sabbatical leave or any other extended personal leave. It does not apply nor Is It Intended to apply to after school, week ends, summertime, Easter break or Christmas vacations. It should be noted that the Labor Code would not permit this type of benefit "shaving". . WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE? - the Board is very concerned with the tremendous Increase In water rates in the Magrath Schoo) since the installation of a water meter. The cost when compared with other Jurisdictions (including Lethbridge) is still many times the amount paid for water In Cardston, Raymond and even Lethbridge. The Board feels the amount is very unreasonable and is checking to be sure there is not an open valve or line in the school causing the excessive charge. A visit to Town Council may be necessary to modify this excessive charge. For Sale: Child’s Swing Sei -used two years- $85. Small tricycle - $10. BUILDING PROGRAM - although financially unable to do any major building renovation or construction until the province adopts a modified fiscal equity program, submissions for the year 1995 will be made to the government before the end of the month. These plans (In priority order) call for modernization of the John Smith School, modernization of the E.J.Wood School and addition to the E.J.Wood School to replace the old, two story frame building currently used by the Cardston Junior High School.
