It is, however, completely preventable through proper oral nygiene and regular dental care. (See Prevention) CAUSES: Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a colorless, sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on everyone's teeth. The bacteria in plaque produce chemical byproducts that attack she gums, bones and other tissues which support the teeth. As the infection spreads, it eventually erodes the bone in which the teeth are lodged and causes tooth loss. CONSEQUENCES: Periodontal disease can have serious consequences for adults. After the age of 35, it is the major cause of tooth loss and is responsible for 70% of all lost adult teeth. YQUWG VICTIMS: Although it affects primarily adults, as many as 90% of Canadian teenagers have a mild form of periodontal disease called gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). 26% of Canadians 19 & over have severe gingivitis and 1.5% have more advanced stages of periodontal disease. A form of periodontal disease known as juvenile periodontitis can affect children. HIGH RISK GROUPS: Diabetics and people with blood disorders seem to have a higher risk of periodontal disease. Pregnant women are also more susceptible becuase of their increased hormone levels. SYMPTOMS: The early symptoms of periodontal disease cause little discomfort. Often only a dentist can recognize the first warning signs which can include red, swollen or tender gums, gums ;hat bleed during toothbrushing and persistent bad breath. ‘HANK YOU: A million thanks to my friends and family for their love and support during my recent stay in the hospital.
