MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly Since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company March 6,2002 Southern Alberta Basketball Playoffs March 6-9 at the Enmax Centre Both the boys and the girls basketball teams have been busy this week finishing up regular league games before the playoffs started this week on Monday. Last Tuesday evening the Zeniths and Eagles hosted LCI Rams. The Zeniths enjoyed a 75-56 victory led by Joe Schow’s 18 points with Kevin Bullock right behind him with 17. . The Eagles also won 69-36 with a big game from Brett Harris and his 24 points. Wednesday, the Pandas and Cubs traveled to play the Winston Churchill Griffins where the Pandas'won easily 76-39. Michelle Smith hit for 13 points and Kelsey Helgeson chipped in 11. The Cubs were also victorious with a score of 43-29. Kim Miller scored 15 points while Jillene Hudson scored 12. Friday, night the Zeniths had another victory over Winston Churchill with Allen Tollestrup scoring 22 points and Joe Schow 21. Brad Sorpoid scored 27 to lead the Eagles to a very convincing win of 81-46. Saturday the excitement continued with the Zeniths and Eagles meeting up with the Raymond Comets in Raymond. After a slow and shaky start the Zeniths finished with a 79-65 victory Allen Tollestrup finished with 32 points while Dylan Alston scored 1 5, Joe Schow 12 and Booker Alston 11. Saturday the Pandas were convincing in a 66-45 win over the Cardston Cougars. Michelle Smith led all Panda scorers with 15 and Kelsey Helgeson hit for 13. The Cubs also won with a score of 47-40. Kassi Alston led the Cubs with 11 points. Monday was the start of the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League’s junior varsity playoffs with the fourth-seeded Cubs hosting the fifth-seeded Raymond Comettes. The Cubs won with a score of 62-56 with Maren Alston scoring 15 points while Kim Miller and Kassi Alston each added 13 points. Second-seeded Magrath Eagles knocked off the seventh-seeded LCI Colts 74-44 behind the 18-point effort of Brad Sorpoid. Riley Sabey added 13 and T.J. Quinton 12 points. Last night in semi-final action on the junior varsity side, the Eagles won a defensive battle over Raymond, 59­34, as three players hit for double figures. Derek Blackmer and Cam Smith both hit for 11 points in the win and Riley Sabey knocked down 10 points. The boys’ championship tilt goes Saturday, 3 p.m. at the Enmax Centre with Magrath playing Cardston. The Cubs weren’t as fortunate as they traveled to LCI last night and were defeated 52-41. Southern Alberta High School 4A Boys games start today at 3 p.m. at the Enmax Centre. The second-seeded Magrath Zeniths have their first game of the playoffs against the Catholic Central Cougars at 9 p.m. Top-seeded Magrath Pandas aren’t in action until Thursday when they face the winner of the LCI-Cochrane matchup, 1:30 p.m. at the Enmax Centre. The team members were Sean Stanford, Kevin Mertz, Cody Lauscher, Logan Peasley coached by Brian Oliver. Opening Ceremonies were on Thursday, February 28 with a banquet of all teams from the 7 zones in the province. Guest speaker was Arina Ford- Johinson that was part of the Sandra Schmirler team that won the Gold medal at the Nagano Olympics in 1998. The foursome lost there first two games to Wesdock 6-3 and to Donnely 8-4. Day two the boys played better and beat Red Deer 8-6.
