Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company Wednesday February 17,1993. 30 cents IBI MAGRATB'S POSTAL SERVICE F0UÆIF BUTTE? Picture Butte is similar in size la Magralh; approximately 1100 in town and with the rural population included, 1700-1800 people. The Picture Butte Post Office no longer bandies the retail end of the mail service. However, they must still handle, sort and cheek al) the outgoing and incoming mail; log everything as previously; but must now send a copy to the retail outlet along with the piece of mail; then, on receiving a parcel that the retail outlet has made a slip for. the post office must make a new slip discarding the one from the retail outlet. Residents must purchase all stamps and Priority Post letters from the retail outlet -Chinook Foods. Letters may be mailed al the Post Office, but only if you have the correct postage. Obviously, the objective in closing down the retail sates in the Post Ofiice was not to improve senice, but to cut jobs. Picture Butte has lost 1 fulltime , 1 part-time and hours have been cut for the remaining part- lime persoDel. Residents are angry and frustrated. Letter writing to the“ powers that be" were to no avail. Many have now opted io lake their business to Lethbridge, Iron Spring, Coaldale or Turin. This will subsequently drain more business from the town as most people lend to do their business in one area. Will Magralh repeat the story ? MffiTffifi TO BE BHJl February 25th al the Senior’s Center; Mayor Dave Lowry will be on hand to explain what is happening to dale, He will also explain the options available for Magralh residents,, (excerpt from Lethbridge Herald 1961 - -by Mildred Harker) "Before the railroad, Ammon Mercer carried mail between Lethbridge and Cardslon on the stage line. That was from 1898-1900 when there were only a few camps and dug-ouls along Pothole Creek. Mr. Mercer delivered letters and parcels to each dwelling, chatting with the pioneers and exchanging news, NEW POSTMASTER In 1900 Mr, Mercer was appointed postmaster for the new town of Magralb. He Mill carried mail on the stage but the Post Ofiice was a portioned corner of the kitchen in his new two- roomed home. This was located where the Woolen Mill now stands. He later built a "two-stoved addition" and the Post Office was moved to the large front room of the older part of the bouse. Al Ibis lime mail was brought by stage from the "half-way house" on Dry Coulee. This is now Herman John’s property, about ten miles north of Magralh. Al that time il was Ibe main route lo Lethbridge from Cardslon and the stop-over for changing horses and meals. There were no roads where they exiBl today-just tall prairie grass. By 1901 the Gall railway company was running a daily train to Magralb which carried the mail. Mr. Mercer took team and wagon lo Ibe station one mite from town and collected the mail. Everything came express so il was bis duly lo pay for parcels al the depot. Collecting for them was another matter so be was relieved wbeD Parcel Post was inaugurated. In 1907 the Post Office was moved to Wo Lee’s building on Ibe comer where the new brick structure now stands. Later il was filled in and a pretty park graced the corner. See HISTORY inside. iifflKaQLanK Our February Potluck dinner will be held Friday Feb. 26th al 12 NOON, al Ibe Centre. All are welcome. TRAVEL NEWS Those who are going to tbe World Champions on lee" Show al the Sportsplex on Saturday February 27th are reminded that payment is needed immediately. The bus will be al the Centre at 6pm that evening. BSTifflOS Cal Alston was sworn in as Magratb's Postmaster Nov.11. 1956 Jn the summer of 1964 al the request of the local R.C.M.P, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Notary Public. He continued his Notary Public duties until bis death in 1969. Soon after the Post Office was moved to the present location. Eldon Coleman began collecting photos of W.WJ1 Servicemen. Eldon, Cal. and Robert Rasmussen were responsible for placing the pictures in our Post Office. Many visitors to our town call in al the Post Office to reminisce about these. In ibe ''good old days" the most hectic season al tbe Post Office was Christmas-with staff working the two Sundays proceeding to keep ahead of the piles of cards and parcels. In 1986. Cal received a plaque, signed by Prime Minister Joe Clark, honouring him for bis 30 years of perfect attendance at the Post Office. Cal served a total of 32 years. He loved the people and fell that he bad the best job in town! ROTE JOHNSON 1 have enjoyed my 25 years as a part time Postal Clerk- June 1965 to Dec. 1990. 1 believe that tbe Post Office is the bub of tbe community; a place to meet old friends and io become acquainted with the "newcomers''. Through the years people have fell free to visit a few minutes; to share a happy letter just received or perhaps some sad news. 1 still miss tbe many familiar faces that came in eacb day. I've had the good fortune io work with some wonderful people through the years; Cal Alston. Belle Harker. Beth Toomer. Karen Atwood. Sharon Owens. Shirley Heggie. Jolayne Harrison. Ila Tuff, and Karen Bourne. Christmas was always an exciting hectic lime for us with boxes and bags of Christmas cards and parcels that were never ending. As the years have gone by 1 have noticed many changes. It has become an extremely busy place; with not as much help; more paper work and many more "householders''; but with workers still trying hard to render the same service. The Post Office has been part of my life. 1 love people and have enjoyed my many years spent in service to tbe community. 1 feel that something would really be missing to have our Post Office closed. TODAY 1 came to work al the Post Office in November 1961.1 felt privileged to work and to be trained with great people who took such pride in tbe Post Office. They were Cal Alston, as postmaster. Jolayne Harrison. Ruth Johnson, and a little lime with Belb Toomer who was retiring. They were all very helpful, 1 have many memories of Cal and bow be had such a way of making people feel welcome and needed when they moved into Magratb and came to pick up their mail. 1 remember him in his trademark ’coverall's quoting poetry as he worked and making sure we knew family ties and backgrounds of people so we could know whose mail went where even tho’ they might be long gone. He loved Magratb greatly. Since his death Ibero have been many changes; Jolayne Harrison became Postmaster, soon after Karen Bourne came here to work, (Febl989). Ruth Johnson retired in 1991.and Shirley Heggie started working here again regularly parttime in June 1991 ( having worked here previously in 1961) When Jolayne retired in Sept, of 1992. it left me (Ila Tuff) as acting postmaster until such time as decisions are made regarding the Post Office's future. Karen Bourne and Shirley Heggie continue on as assistants with Carol Smith helping out on occasion. YORK LOAD Ye handle some 30.000 pieces of incoming mail EACH YEEK, plus an average of 300 parcels, insured and otherwise, customs parcels, C.O.D.'s and approximately 9000piecesof admail (that’s wbal helps keep the price of stamps down to what it is) There are of course immense increases in tbe volumes al Christmas time. On a weekly basis there are around 5000 first class letters, plus parcels, registered mail and priority post leaving here fior the other destinations around the world. It’s a very busy job. but we all agree that it’s very worthwhile and that the Magratb people are a pleasure to work for.HOCKEY NEWS TADPOLES On Thursday February 11th, the Moms played their sons and lost the game 9-3. Conl'd from pg.l.HISTORY "Ammon Mercer continued to dispense mail and in 1909 the office was moved back to a building just east of his borne. Realizing the need for a permanent building Mr. Mercer built a new brick building for the osi Office' . Jaler , the Woolen liH office and storage building. "Anthony Rasmussen of edmond Utah, became the next postmaster in 1912. Once again the office was moved to a frame building constructed by Jed Kimball. It was located south of banner's Hardware. MAKE MOVE In 1914 John T, Steele was appointed postmaster al the same localioD. By 1916 lhe office was moved to a frame structure built by the late Levi Harker.Tbis vas between lhe drug store and ' ’.cber shop. Mr. Steele inued as postal clerk until jstment in lhe Canadian Army in 3916. Robert G. Swift, a veteran of Vimy Ridge, then came to handle lhe mail. He brought bis family and being handicapped needed his dwelling near the Post Office. The building be constructed to serve both purposes is located one-half block east of lhe new Postal building. He distributed mail in lhe front two rooms of Ibis building until 1925 when he returned to England. In December 1925 Hyde S. Taylor. Air Force Veteran of World War!, was made Magralb's Post Master and served diligently in that capacity until bis retirement in 1956. He recalls lhe first Air-Mail in Ibe *20's. In those days mail came on the daily CPR train and was delivered by the late N.E,Blaxall and Frank P. Miller. The old dray drawn up to unload mail bags was a familiar sight to us as children. TRUCK SERVICE When Greyhound Bus service came to Magralb the mail was carried on it. Cooper's Transport took over the business in 1950 and another change look place in mail service. The mail came and was dispatched in the morning thus relieving lhe beclic rush by receiving mail all afternoon. Christmas was always a busy lime, but Mr. and Mrs. Taylor recall it especially because that was the lime of year they started in tbe mail service. They still have nightmares about those busy days but many pleasant memories remain to overshadow them. For Ihirty-oDe years they served Magralb and district. They watched tbe town grow aDd prosper. Tbe Post Office was a natural meeting place for ail the town people to exchange news and greetings. Many visitors called al the office for information about friends and relatives they wished to visit in town and Taylors obligingly gave them directions. When Hyde Taylor retired as Post Master in 1956 Calvin Alston was appointed to succeed him. Shortly after this the Post Office was moved to occupy the front of the building known as Duane's Electric, it has remained there until, the new building was ready for occupation .(Jan 1961) Mail is now dispensed at tbe new brick Post Office where a bumble frame lent a corner for lhe purpose back in 1907. 1/2 PRICE SPECIALS 1 Rack LADIES BLOUSES Size 6-18 1 Rack LADIES SLACKS Size 8-16 4 ONLY Winter White Cardigans SMI R^52,00 "life does not offer anything sweeter than the love of dear we® and lhe faring of time kleiner.'’ Paul HJDunn AGRICULTURE F_QR_SALE. 13 Full blood Simmental Cows with calves—-4 heifers,2 bulls Sires:Abricott, Bar 5 Dignified, Lacombe Achilles,Legacy, Galant Farm Astex Water Purification System with Carbon Filter Chlorinator,Settling Tank Versitile 12 foot #103 Swather(needs work) — $100.00 Massey #12 Baler and 15 Bale Stacker—$400.00 Electronic Business Typewr iter(new-$1000. ) - -$200.00 Key Board and Printer(Image writer) for Mac Computer with a number of games and other software-=-OFFERS Call Lore Davies MUSTSELL 6 year old Gelding Quarter Horse/ thoroughbred cross. He came to Welling to begin grade 2 and then on to Magrath for grade 6: graduating in 1954. He then attended Ag-Tech in Calgary for one year. He is married to Margaret (nee: Diglow) who was raised and educated in Magrath; graduating in 1955. Margaret is the youngest daughter (16 th child) of Eimer and Nanna Diglow. Rod began an apprenticeship in Vulcan for four years achieving the highest marks in his class. September 15,1965 was a pivotal day in our lives, as Rod purchased Flamen Motors here in Magrath and we took up permanent residence . From what I can gather we are the fourth owner and the existing building is still here, with everyone having added their own touches. We offer GENERAL REPAIRS for cars and trucks, farm equipment and also handle HANDICAPPED SUPPLIES; install lifts, van conversions, ramps etc. Our hours of business are 8:00am -5:00pm Monday thru Friday. We have enjoyed our many years of service in the community. CONTEST Are you as curious as I was to know where the five locations were? For Sandra On February 14th a Sweetheart was bom I'm sure it was a joyous mom, For Mom and Dad -a little Miss, For Reggie and Ronnie - a Baby Sisi Life seemed fine - but then, just maybe, This family needed another baby So, almost in time for your fifth birthday Came Mel-roly poly Sheila Rae. From "our Baby“ to “Big Sister" you went And you soon found out just what that meant. Squabbles and spats -yes we had our share Yet for me-1 knew you would always be there. You were there through the school days and the move to the city Through the mini, Peter Nero, boyfriends and more cities. You were my roommate, my sister, my exemplar, my Wend, Yes- and only the 'roommate* part came to an end Now look at us - both in our 40‘s (oh, gag) With a husbanfd and children and parts that now sag And you're still there for met and this is true Though we're both getting older- i'm still younger than youl
