All of the committees reported that things are rolling along smoothly. Labatts has agreed to help sponsor the event in particular the beer gardens and silent auction. They will supply signs, cups and a mountain bike that will be in the silent auction. Several other great prizes have been received for the silent auction. They include a Calloway Driver, Paintball passes and an autographed picture from the reigning women’s World Champion curling team of Colleen Jones. We also have signed jerseys from most of the Canadian NHL teams and two Western Hockey League teams. We have over 50 items so far, so there should be something for everyone. Ads have been placed in the Vulcan Advocate and the Brooks County Chronicle to advertise our event and hopefully draw in more people. We should also be getting some coverage in the Regional paper as well. Posters have been designed and are going up around the county. In addition a news release has gone out to all the local media and we are awaiting some feedback from them as well. The beach volleyball tourney is just about full so if you wanted to get a team in it then call the hotel soon so you won’t be disappointed. Luminaries are now available at the bank for $5.00. Luminaries are lighted candles in bags. Purchasers personalize them with names. They are used to remember those we have lost to cancer and celebrate the lives of survivors and support patients. They will stay lighted for hours so we are going to use them to light up the street. Greg Deitz is keeping up to date information on our event on his website. The address is www.uofmilo.com. Thanks to everyone who have volunteered to help, been at the meetings, have provided suggestions or are spreading the word about the fundraiser. The excitement seems to be building as we get closer to the day of the event. What a busy season! Many of the 1' s and 2's are involved in both soccer and baseball, and with all of the necessary school activities that are associated with this frenzied time of year, I know these little ones are looking forward to a much deserved summer break. These last two months of school have been/will be busy ones for the l's and 2's. May 25th, we traveled with the 3's and 4's to the Children's Festival in Calgary to see a performance of the Ginger Bread Man and Other Stories. (That's all I can tell you about this excursion until next time because I am actually writing this news prior to the trip.) June 2nd, the same four grades will once again be traveling to Calgary to visit the Science Center. We really are grateful to our bus drivers who take time out of their busy schedules to transport us on these outings. A big thank you to the support staff and parent volunteers who help out on our field trip days as well. We could not do it without you! © Our last unit in Language Arts will be focusing on the Wild West. Mrs. Kirk's class in Hazel Cameron is doing a similar unit at this time, so we are planning a two-day cultural exchange with her class the last week of school. Mrs. Kirk will be bringing her students to Milo on June 22nd. We plan to visit Neal and Mealane Deitz's farm for some first hand experience on a present day ranch. Then it is back to Milo where we will be participating in a fun circuit of old Wild West games. The Cowboy Shuffle Relay, Wagon Races, Three-legged Races, and Sack Races m\\ be some of the games featured at this time. The following day, our class will be traveling to Vulcan to spend the day with Mrs. Kirk's class at which time we will enjoy more Wild West activities. As many of you know already, the Milo School is currently holding a penny drive to raise funds for cancer research. The class that brings in the most pennies per capita will have the opportunity to style Mrs. Walker's hair whatever way they wish, the week prior to the festivities of the Snake Valley Hoedown. Dates to remember: June 7th is the Elementary Track and Field in Vulcan, and June 8th is the Grade 1 orientation for the current Kindergarten students (on this day our grade 1 students do not attend school). I will let you all know how June went in our last newsletter of the year. (-Submitted by Mrs. Phair)CKTnook CREDIT UNION LTD. Today, fathers pray their children will speak English. In 1904, a father's horsepower meant his horses. Today, it's the size of his minivan. In 1904, if a father put a roof over his family's head, he was a success. Today, it takes a roof, deck, pool, and 4-car garage. And that's just the vacation home. In 1904, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when the baby arrived. Today, a father must wear a smock, know how to breathe, and make sure film is in the video camera. In 1904, fathers passed on clothing to their sons. Today, kids wouldn't touch Dad's clothes if they were sliding naked down an icicle. In 1904, fathers could count on children to join the family business. Today, fathers pray their kids will soon come home from college long enough to teach them how to work the computer and set the VCR. In 1904, fathers pined for old country Romania, Italy, or Russia. Today, fathers pine for old country Hank Williams. In 1904, a father smoked a pipe. If he tries that today, he gets sent outside after a lecture on lip cancer. In 1904, fathers shook their children gently and whispered, "Wake up, it's time for school." Today, kids shake their fathers violently at 4 a.m., shouting: "Wake up, it's time for hockey practice." In 1904, a father came home from work to find his wife and children at the supper table. Today, a father comes home to a note: "Jimmy's at baseball, Cindy's at gymnastics, I'm at adult- Ed, Pizza in fridge." In 1904, fathers and sons would have heart-to- heart conversations while fishing in a stream. Today, fathers pluck the headphones off their sons' ears and shout, "WHEN YOU HAVE A MINUTE." In 1904, a father gave a pencil box for Christmas, and the kid was all smiles. Today, a father spends $800 at Toys 'R' Us, and the kid screams: "I wanted Sega!" In 1904, if a father had breakfast in bed, it was eggs and bacon and ham and potatoes. Today, it's Special K, soy milk, dry toast and a lecture on cholesterol. In 1904, a Father's Day gift would be a hand tool. Today, he'll get a digital organizer. In 1904, fathers said, "A man's home is his castle." Today, they say, "Welcome to the money pit." In 1904, "a good day at the market" meant Father brought home feed for the horses. Today, "a good day at the market" means Dad got in early on a hot stock tip. In 1904, a happy meal was when Father shared funny stories around the table. Today, a happy meal is what Dad buys at McDonald's. In 1904, a father was involved if he spanked the kid now and then. Today, a father's involved only if he coaches Little League and organizes Boy Scouts and car pools. In 1904, when fathers entered the room, children often rose to attention. Today, kids glance up and grunt, "Dad, you're invading my space." In 1904, fathers threatened their daughters’ suiters with shotguns if the girl came home late. Today, fathers break the ice by saying, "So.how long have you had that earring?" In 1904, fathers pined for the old school, which meant a one-room, red-brick building. Today, fathers pine for the old school, which means Gordie Howe and Mickey Mantle. In 1904, fathers were never truly appreciated. In 2004, fathers are never truly appreciated.Vannatta’s Hail Insurance With good moisture conditions, crops have a good start. Don't fall short on your hail insurance. Give us a call. We studied many different types of poems, poetic devices used by poets, and had many chances to write our own versions of these poems. Students wrote poems on a variety of things including: Remembrance Day, Nursery Rhyme poems, Acrostic poems, Milo Municipal Library contest poems, and free verse poems. During December, as a final closure to the unit, each student was asked to choose their favourite poem they had written and it would then be entered into the "Celebration of Young Poets" Poetry Writing competition out of Logan, Utah. After many steps of editing and revision, every student in the class had a poem ready to send into the contest. A few weeks later, we received notice that 13 out of our 30 students had been chosen to be published in the Poetry Anthology. Our poems were returned to us with a final draft of the poem to be checked over. They were then forwarded to the company for the final print. The students who were published were: Braden & Cassie Thompson, Kassey Shier, Rick Bearhat, Lori Leather, Jennifer Way, Morgan Bath, Maurissa Umscheid, Rebecca Holoboff, Kayla Armstrong, Byron Poor Eagle, Madison Williams and Melissa McGill. There will be a copy available for your perusal in the Milo Municipal Library and one in the school library. For your convenience, the students' names are listed alphabetically by last name in the back of the book. The table of contents will show you the sections for each grade level in the book. It was such a pleasure to see the students beaming with pride when they actually saw the book and were able to find their poems in print. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PUBLISHED POETS! God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it. A little girl was camping with her family and lost a tooth. Her father suggested that she put it under her pillow and the Tooth Fairy will exchange it for a half-dollar. She looked at her father with skepticism and said,” Oh sure, as if the Tooth Fairy is going to pay $12 to get into this campground just to give me $.50.” History of Fathers Day Sonora Dodd, of Washington, was one of the first people who had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was bom in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. Condolences go out to family & friends of Ivy Goldthorpe. Condolences to Betty Godkin and family on the passing of her Betty’s grandmother. THANK YOUS We thought we should let this caring community know how Lisa is doing. Lisa finished her treatments at the end of January and had follow up tests in Feb. and May. Although the mass will never be gone, scans indicate the tumor is not growing and the cancer is dead. The tumor that remains is like scar tissue. Lisa will be monitored for ten years to make sure the cancer does not return and for side effects of the treatment. Lisa is getting stronger and life is getting back to normal for her. By August she may be off of all medications related to her cancer and treatments. We want to once again thank everyone for your cards, gifts, concerns, prayers and all the help we have had in so many different ways. It has made this process so much easier. Sadly the oncology clinic and hospital seem very busy and some we have met since Lisa was diagnosed have passed on. Thankfully many of the children are doing great and this is amazing when you consider there are so many types and stages of cancer and the treatment is different for each. We feel certain the private support given to the hospitals and research are what make success stories possible. This community's support in this area is remarkable. Thanks Again To Everyone for Everything. Lisa, Keith, Donna, Gina and Evan. A sincere thank you to everyone for your cards, food, flowers and messages of condolence on the passing our dear sister-in-law and Aunt Ivy Goldthorpe. Your kindness is much appreciated and makes our loss easier to bear. Lorraine and Letty Lynn. The students and staff of the Milo Community School would like to extend a huge THANK- YOU to the Milo Alphabets Kindergarten Society for their generous donation to the school library. We were able to purchase more than 60 new picture books for our students to enjoy. We now have all of the Caldecott Awarded Books for the last 20 years and many more award winning books. Thanks again for your generosity, xxx A Big Thank You from Dan Watt and Lee Fryburger to the following businesses who kindly donated all the great prizes for the I.S.D.E.
