One major item of concern was the extra levy that has been assessed . against Colony schools. Provincial Education grants are calculated on a per pupil basis, a one-room school with fewer than 25 pupils cannot operate economically. By approval from the Minister of Education, the Board has authority to make an extra levy on schools with low enrollment, The basis of calculating the amount of the levy was explained to those present, Maintenance costs were also discussed (8 Colony schools are housed in the Colony church)j the Board agreed to make a yearly contribution of $600 representing approximately 1/3 of the total maintenance cost for the use of the facility, A revised Dress Standards policy was adopted by the Board for the Junior and Senior High Schools as follows; The new school act places much more responsibility on the Board for the development of the policy, The Board has enlisted the help of students, staff and parents in developing some policies and they appreciate the time and effort spent by these groups- Students of the Cardston School Division have always maintaned high standards and it seems to be the desire of all concerned to continue to do so. Students requests, parents recomendations and suggestions from Boar members have been considered in formulating the following general standards of dress: Student's hair is to be well groomed, clean, neat and tidy and kept out of the eyes. Small mustaches will be allowed and sideburns should not be below the ear. Clothing worn to dances should be determined by the Student Council and staff. This will depend upon the nature of the function. Individual schools, under the direction of the School Principal may set special school activities as long as they do not conflict with this policy, Student's slacks should l^e neat, clean and tidy. Hand bleached and frayed clothing, one piece jump suits and shoa/ts are not acceptable and will not be allowed in school. It is hoped that students would accept these standards in a positive vein and will co-operate with the student council and staff in the adminstration of this program. It is expected that the principal will be consulted and will be the person responsible to inform students who fail to meet the standards. The Student Council has agreed to assist by advising students who need assistance and advice. They will also work with the School Adminstration ir further development of policies so that standards remain high and in keeping with the best fashion and thinking of our day. It is the intention of the Divisional Board to have this policy reviewed periodically. Next meeting of the Board was set for September 14th at 9 AOMC e r • • * • r • t * •••«»<* They call the season "fall? because that's what you do ver the leaf rake hidden in the grass.-, • i •!
