Present were Mayor Vooys, Councillor Whaley, Councillor Phillips and Municipal Administrator Dorothy Way. The minutes of the meeting held on August 12, 2002 were read. Councillor Whaley moved the adoption of the minutes. Mayor Vooys seconded. CARRIED. The Marquis Foundation will be having a open house for the new addition. The dust abatement has been finished and we are waiting for the final bill from the Vulcan County. The Council had a discussion on the water reservoirs. If a trench is dug it would be the full width of the north reservoir. A new reservoir could be dug on the south side and the clay from this one could be used to fill in the old reservoir. All the reservoirs would need to be lined. If a new reservoir is dug the Village would need to talk to the Phillips family about buying the land. Councillor Phillips will abstain from voting on this matter. The Municipal Administrator will contact Maurice Walsh from Alpine Engineering Ltd. to set up a meeting with the 3 Councillors to discuss this. The Village Council will have a meeting with the Water Co-op to discuss them paying for one half of the cost. A letter was received from the Chinook Arch Regional Library System in regards to the 2003-2005 budget. There is no change to the fee for member libraries, however, member councils are being asked for an 18 cents per capita increase. The 2003-2005 budget will be sent to member councils in mid August and we are asking their member councils to approve the budget by November this year. The Village of Milo has authorized the Vulcan County to act on behalf of the Village of Milo, and any adjacent landowners located within the Village of Milo, for the purchase of any Lomond Subdivision discontinued railway of ways that may be located within the Village. The Village Council will not do anything with this until we hear from the Vulcan County. The Organizational Meeting will be held on October 21, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. The town man Victor Crowe will be on holidays from Oct. 7th to October 28th inclusive. A notice will be put in the Can-Opener that the garbage will be picked up on Saturday Oct. 12, 19, and 26. MOVED by Councillor Whaley that Ryan Way be hired to pick up the garbage for the 3 Saturday's from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The next meeting of the Village of Milo was set for Monday, October 21, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Office. The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. VILLAGE OF MILO MINUTES The special meeting of the Village of Milo was held on Thursday, September 26, 2002 at 9:15 a.nm. at the Village Office. Present were Mayor Vooys, Councillor Whaley, Councillor Phillips, Municipal Administrator Dorothy Way, Kevin Booth and Maurice Walsh. The meeting was held to discuss the water reservoirs. The Village Council has decided to put in another reservoir on the south side, as their is a shortage of storage. There is a sump pump between the 2 holding tanks in the water treatment plant. The new reservoir will not be done this fall as the prices go higher, but it will be done in the spring. The Village Council will have to decide on the size of the new reservoir. Will use the clay from the new reservoir to line the reservoir on the north side. The cost of lining 3 reservoirs would cost less than lining 2 reservoirs. The north reservoir to be drained and then the depth of water to be measured to see if the water tables change. There was a 3 - 4 year study from water resources on this with 4 wells put in at 30 - 40 feet. If we are unable to find this report, we may be able to get it from water resources in Lethbridge. Kevin will take a sample from the reservoir, the lake water and the ground water, and Councillor Phillips will take these water samples in for testing on September 26th. The Municipal Administrator to let Maurice Walsh know what the results are from these tests. The meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.Van Tassell - Bertschy Wedding A beautiful mountain scene, a bright and sunny, however very windy day, was the setting for the wedding held Sept. 28, 2002 at Waterton Park Ab. On the lawn of Bay Shore Inn Convention Center, when Tamara Bertschy and Derek Van Tassell exchanged vows. Tamara is the daughter of Fred and Nancy Bertschy of Milo Ab., and Derek, son of Delores Hopkins (formerly Van Tassell) and Warren Van Tassell (deceased) from Fort Saskatchewan Ab. The maid of honor was Janet Ngo of Edmonton Ab. Janet was a high school classmate of Tamara, and they have been friends through the years since. Usman Ghani, who was a law school classmate of Derek and is now practicing in Vancouver, was best man. Nadine and John Bertschy, daughter and son of Louis and Donna Bertschy and niece and nephew of Tamara, were flower girl and ring bearer. Stephen Bertschy was the usher (and helped too with the decorating the night before, along with the "bride and groom to be", and many others). During the service were readings chosen by the bride and groom and read by Roberta Roth of Cowley Ab. and Aunt and Godmother of Derek; and Barbara Langley, cousin of Tamara, from Calgary Ab. Officiating the service was Michael Sharkey, a life-long friend of Derek, from Fort Saskatchewan. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Bob Evans, a friend who did a great job, also looking after the "growing up" slide-show, very enjoyable. A lovely hot meal; speeches, which also the bride and groom took part in. Visiting, meeting all the new relatives, in general having a great time. The wedding dance started at 9:00 1:30, the dance floor held an enthusiastic overflow crowd the whole night. Refreshments served. The bride and groom were pleased to have attending Derek's maternal Grandmother Helen Miller from Bow Island; parents, all the Aunts and Uncles and many first cousins, as well as classmates from school years to nursing school and law school. Those who attended from a distance were from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Derek and Tamara are residing in Grand Prairie, where they are both employed. A honeymoon trip to Florida during the winter is planned.'Kri 1 & CO BARRISTERS and SOLJCI'IXJIIS SERVICING ALL YOUR LEGAL NEEDS Dr. Robert J. So what do we do now? It's cold, it's frozen and we are way behind. Many roads will not be gravelled and some construction will not get done. The office rebuilding is way behind. It is unfortunate that many miles of graveling can't be done now. Also* roads that were gravelled this spring are almost bare again. Where does the gravel go? Wet road surfaces, heavy loads and high speed all take a toll. Besides this problem, the snow plow throws some gravel into the ditches. Does anybody out there have a solution? I think we need another gravel truck and trailer for one thing. We may have trouble finding a driver. Do we need to gravel every road on our grid system? Would it be a hardship to go several miles out of our way to get on a gravelled road? A $40 000 4x4 must be good for something. I firmly believe we can't sustain our present road system with the equipment we have now. We have good equipment and good workers but they still can’t keep up. The gravel trucks were working 12 hours per day 6 days a week, but too many lost days from bad weather have taken their toll. Grant Lahd Councilor Div. 7 G. We could sure use one about now. This winter’s weather sure makes one think of Christmas. That is if you can forget about the unharvested grain in the fields, and many other fall jobs still waiting to be done. The days are ticking away and we will soon be into the Christmas season, of those wonderful meals and parties. And of course the spills that can happen. The following is a red wine stain removal quoted from: “The Queen of Clean” by Linda Cobb. “Wine: Never serve red wine without having white wine nearby! And always tend to stain as soon as possible. For red wine spills, dilute the spot with white wine, then flush with cool water and apply salt. If no white wine is available, sprinkle heavily with salt and flush with club soda or cool water. Applying a paste of 20 Mule Team Borax and water usually works. For red wine spills and other red stains, keep Wine Away Red Wine Stain Remover on hand. It is totally non-toxic and works so fast on red wine and red stains that even I am still amazed. The directions simple and easy. Blot up the spill, apply the Wine Away and watch the red stain disappear. Blot with a wet cloth.: Here is a nice light Christmas Cake you may like to make. 1 c. butter or margarine 1 c. white sugar 2 eggs 1 Vt c. cherries (red/green) cut in halves 1 lb. (approx. 3 c.) raisins 1 c. mixed peel or mixed fruit 2 c. flour !4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. almond 1 tsp. Baking powder % c. fruit juice (orange, pineapple or ?) Cream butter and sugar until very light. Add eggs and beat well. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder. Cut cherries and mix with other fruits. Sift all the flour mixture over fruit and mix gently. Add fruit juice to creamed mixture, also vanilla and almond flavouring. Stir in flour/fruit mixture. Put into prepared (foil or paper lined) pans, either 2 medium round pans or 1 tube pan. Bake 3 hours @ 325° F. or until done. Depends on your oven. May take more or less time. The Peterson Reunion On September 28 at the Vulcan Legion about 100 members of the late Nels and Hulda Peterson family gathered to enjoy a day of visiting, looking at pictures and studying the family tree(which was made by Russell Peterson). People came from as far away as Montreal, Ontario, Arizona, B.C. and Saskatchewan. Ages ranged form 91 years (Lil Peterson) to 2 months (Hunter Tharle, Lil’s great grandson). Nelsie Roberston at age 87 is the only member left of the 12 brothers and sisters. A Pat Fullerton (Nelsie s daughter ) was interested in organizing the reunion along with Russell Peterson (Lloyd Peterson’s son) There last reunion was held at Lake McGregor in 1972. Memories were shared and a picture of a flower made with 100 buttons was displayed which was made by Hulda years ago. It was restored by Pat. Hulda had a collection of 10 000 antique buttons that were collected over the ears. There was a write up in The Calgary Herald in 1947 when she had a collection of 6000 buttons. This collection is being appraised. Kay Zaytsoff and Carol Tiegen also displayed their aprons crocheted by Grandma circa 1945. Lunch was served and family pictures were taken. The McIntyre family (Emily Peterson) from Sundre has the largest number of descendants but the Art Peterson family had the most descendants present. Also a picture was taken of all the first cousins present who ranged in age from 74 to 54, some meeting for the first time. When Hunter Tharle was registered, he was the 1900 descendant but some babies have not been registered yet. Hopefully another reunion will be held in 2 years. The Fall Fair, Milo Community Flail, Milo Arena, Rural Initiatives and History Book are all part of this organization. Any adult in the community can be a member of the Ag. Society. To meet society's act requirements, there is an annual fee of $ 1 to become a member, You are always welcome. Currently, we receive some provincial funds to benefit the community. Changes in the agriculture business, many of which are beyond our control, affect ALL sectors of our community. This evening will provide a chance for people to come together in a fun atmosphere to see that “we’re all in this together.” It will emphasize how important it is to laugh to relieve stress and that we must learn to take a positive approach to life’s problems. JOE LISHERON Through his use of humor & audience participation, he will lead the group in looking at ATTITUDE as our source of stress. We can choose to be negative, pessimistic, skeptical, critical and fearful—we can choose to hold unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others—OR—we can choose to learn, examine, challenge; solve, resolve, grow and master our surroundings. Gary and Mona Middlestead Thank you very much to Prairie Perfection Catering for the lovely napkin holder, napkins, and salt and pepper shakers I received at the Milo Fall Fair. Charlotte Nelson I want to give a big thank you to Lorraine and Letty Lynn for the help. For the phone calls while Elgin was being rushed to the hospital and also for looking after our pet, Whiskers. Frances Bates Thank you to Rev. Ed Summers for the visitations and prayers in aid of Elgin Bates and myself. Frances Bates Thank you to the kind person who saved my glasses from catastrophe in Queenstown. Eye am grateful! Heather Lahd I would like to thank my many friends who were so kind to think of me at the time of brother Allan's death. Once again we send a BIG THANK YOU to each and every one for the pies, vegetables and giving up your busy schedule to help us in many, many ways to prepare for this supper. This would not have been possible without your grateful help. Thanks to a great Community and God Bless. Milo United Church Women AAAAAAAAAA I am still collecting Heinz Baby Food Labels. Ten cents per label and box top is donated to the Children's Hospital. Please drop them off at Jamie's. Monica Monner It has come to the attention of the Community Hall Board that there has been some controversy about taking a silver collection at showers. The reason for doing this is to help offset the cost of utilities used during one of these functions. It was decided at our last meeting that if hostesses choose not to take a silver collection we will have to charge rent. We are sorry to do this, but the cost of utilities continues to rise. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. ########## Annual Community Hall Clean-up Friday, November 29th 9:30 a.m. Bring buckets and rags. Cleaning materials will be supplied. Please come out and help clean up your community hall. %%%%NOVEMBER i 2002 SUN MON TUE WED THUR FRI SAT October 28-November 14 Mom’s Pantrv Fund-Raiser - Milo School Lutheran Church 11 am United Church 11 am JR.
