MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly Since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company Ju/y ^¿,^000 Magrath Days Celebration A Suc cess It couldn't have been nicer weather. The Celebration started with the softball tournament on Thursday night and wrapped up with the fireworks and dance Saturday evening. There was the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast followed by the Parade Saturday morning, which there was an abundance of candy as my A children found out and I thing to be proud of. For the added. According to Don Me-hew pitching was a problem for the team until they brought out the big guns. Burns Alston stepped out onto the pitchers mount and "He could hit the plate." says Don. I heard one in the afternoon, right after the final game at the softball tourney on Saturday which saw teammates and family members alike scrambling for their vehicles. Then again after the fireworks adding to the list, with a couple more on Sunday. Someone out there needed help and speaking from experience there is no finer 'help' then the people who live and love this community. Celebrations aside you know this takes priority. Hext time you get a chance, shake a volunteers hand or give them a pat on the back to say thanks. You never know when you might need ’help' too. The softball tournament was the star attraction of our Celebration. With twelve teams competing for a spot in the final game every game was worth watching. I didn't have a chance to speak to all the teams so forgive me if I've missed a few. Baldersons sources tell me that the Ken & Marge Balderson family are a tough team to beat. I also spoke to the Harker team and learned team founder Levi Harker was the first Mayor and Bishop of Ma-grath. Now the Earl Harker team, could have had two teams last year. Doreen Alston informed me that this is the Alston 100 year reunion. 1900 Joseph and Louisa Alston settled in Magrath. They expect about 100 to attend the 3 day reunion. This is the second year for the Strate team and knowing some of the family members I'd say this is one of the teams to beat in next Celebration. Having entered a team for the last 17 years Foggins have another reason for getting together, George and Beth are celebrating their 60 wedding anniversary. The Jackson team tells me that they have 31 grandchildren and 97 great grandchildren eligible for the roster. Ida Jones says this is their first year entering a team. "It was a great time, we had lots of fun," says Shawna Jones. These are just a few of the teams who entered. There were 2 Town teams as well as, N. Cook, Holladay and Workman. Everyone claimed to have a great time and I think that was the objective of the people who put this event together. A big thanks to all those who participated and to Mr. Bill Alston who organized the tournament. Congratulations. The Outdoor Talent and Variety show was something to be seen. Falene Wolsey tells me the show was a great success. There was a variety of talent to keep you entertained like, Josh Bourelle and his band Inside Joke, Deep South Cloggers were a hit as was the Highland Dancing number. Local vocal talents like Mike, Devon & Shawn Cahoon, Lydia Gimlet & Amanda Prince, Ruth Mil-nar, Clayton Gast, Perry Kenny and Nathan Woolsey rounded off the singing portion. “We are very flexible,” she says indicating the unscheduled yet popular entry performed by Bart Harris. This is the second Talent and Variety Show and they would like to see it become a added attraction for the Celebration next year. “We’re not limited to just singing and dancing. If you would like to do comedy or reading or anything you have a talent for let us know now so we can plan for next year,” says Falene. So if you would like to share your talents and bring more community spirit to our Celebration Day then contact Falene Woolsey at 758-3992. Just a mention about Bart Harris. Ona Native American Scholarship to BYU in ‘97 he first became involved in Living Legends, formerly Lamanite Generation. He started out in a drum group and then with the help of some Internationally renown friends he developed a interest in it As his interest has grown so has his talent as you saw on Saturday. He says “It’s something to be experienced.” And we can vouch for that This has really helped him to be more aware of societies intolerance to other cultures. “If you get a chance attend a powwow. They are open to the public and excellent” It's here! Guard Camp one week instructional camp for girls sponsored by Spirit of Al" berta. Mon, July 31— Fri, Aug 4 from 3pm"4:30pm. The girls will have the opportunity (if they desire) to march with "Spirit" in the Card" ston on Aug, 12 parade. How about the going to the Tom Karren Gym tomorrow night to watch the Alberta Juvenile (under 17) team play a team of University and College players. Returning from Japan where they won all four games what better way to prepare for the Canadian Championships then with a little sibling rivalry. The Alberta Juvenile Team features Magraths’ own Jimmy Balderson while older brother Danny, along with Spencer Holt and others, suit up for the college All Stars. It should be an excellent game. Admission $2/ person with proceeds to Zenith Basketball program. • WHATS HAPPENING. - . Page 3 Did you catch the Annual Bike Ride and Fun Run on Friday evening? If you didn’t, not to worry, my kids and I entered the race so we’ll fill you in. It started at the Alberta Treasury Branch around 6:30 p.m. Everyone lined up to test their endurance and strength. Please, I have a four 1/2 year old, a three year old and almost 2 year old in the baby seat behind me. We started out steady enough, constantly reminding my kids to “Stay on our side” of the road. There was some help, the odd car coming up behind us and honking it’s horn scaring my 4 yr old to tears. But in the name of family fun and fitness we pedaled on. After a handful of spills and a couple of stops for water we made it to the first (and our only) water stop. Luckily for me Rob Ririe came along and offered to take one of my kids back to the Bank. I then sent my other one on to the finish line and it was just me and my little one. I switched gears and pedaled like mad hoping to at least catch up to the last person to pass me, they had already made the turn around and were headed back. Coming around Strong’s comer and up the hill I thought I was going to die. The physical fitness I realized 1 wasn’t in was painfully clear. 1 decided I was going to cross that finish line pedaling or die trying. 1 didn’t make or break any records but, while sipping my complimentary juice provided by the ATB, all’s well that ends well at least 1 got a really “Kool” T-shirt out of the deal. I highly recommend it for next years Celebration activities. M.S. . . . THE MUSEUM Andrea Burrows filled me in on all the excitement at the Museum on Saturday. The mir seum, established in 1986, as had numerous locations and now currently shares the build“ ing with the Library. 'It was the coolest place around being so hot outside and there were refreshments served/ They have a gallery upstairs in the library and the main gallery and offices are downstairs. The main attraction was a School House replica built by Tina & Law“ rence Fellger. They spoke with numerous people who recall the old school houses, people who Its that time of year again! Andrea also suggests to pencil in an unveiling in the fall. They are in the process of identifying Schoolhouse loca“ tions to place markers. There is also going to be a Plaque to be placed at the JA. Spencer Memorial Park. The Rasmus“ sen Sleigh will join the current Dredger as markers. The Sleigh is 100 years old. The J-A. Spencer Memorial Park will also receive a replacement plaque awarded to it by the Federal Government to commemorate the Galt Canal, the 1st irrigation system in Canada. How those are some things to celebrate. • Page 4 MAGRATH NEWS COMMUNITY INTERESTS Home Town Friendliness We would like to say a hearty thank you to Randy at Magrath Co-op for opening his doors on Magrath Day Celebration, no less, to help us out with a serious problem.
