Tanner It has come to the attention of the R.C.M.P. that sane young adults have been swiirming in the town swirnning pool after hours. Besides being dangerous it is also against the law. Any persons being found in the swinrnimng pool property who do not have the authority to be there will be arrested and charged for tre^pa-ssing. No warnings will be given. As we come closer to the Magrath Celebration Days, the R.C.M.P. would like the people of Magrath to be aware of the laws surrounding firecrackers and fireworks. Fireworks may be used in towrn if they are the B-type of fireworks, prior to being used the person responsible must obtain a permit from the town of Magrath, or the Magrath Firecheif. Failure to comply with these conditions will result in seizure of your fireworks. FIRECRACKERS are ILLEGAL in CANADA, anyone in possession of fireworks will be charged, and al 1 firecrackers seized. NOTICE: 50th Anniversary Tea. Children of Don and Anne Campbell invite family and friends to celebrate their 50th Anniversary at a Cane and Go Tea at South Minister Church Hall, Lethbridge, July 15th, 2-5 p.m. CANNING COUNTICWN The countdown to canning season has begun. It won’t be long until we aie smothered with fresh garden produce. It's time to go'down to the basement and dig out the canners and jars in preparation for the food preservation season. Whether you're a beginner or an old pro, here are a few tips to thin} about before you get started. WHY CAN? The grocery store is ful2 of canned fruits and vegetables so why bothei canning at home? The most corrmon reply to this question is, "it tastes better". Home canning can be econc nical if you grow your own fruits and vegetables. Before you begin, consider how much stcrage space is available and how much canned produce your family can use and enjoy, iou don't want to hear corrments like, "Oh, no, not canned corn again!" . EQUIPMENT Now is the time to "take stock" and make sure you have all of your cenning equipment. . This will save making a trif to the store when you have a mountain of beans in your sink that have to be canned before supper. To prepare fruits and vegetables, you will need sharp knives, a colander, bowls, measuring cups (large and small), wooden spoons, a ladle and a kettle for pre-c ooking or blanching. Other useful utensils include a jarlifter, tongs, a wire basket, a wide-mouth funnel, cooling rack, cuttirg board and a timer to ensure accurate precessing time. Check your jars carefull} for damage. Chips or defects in jar tops or edges can prevent an airtight seal anc cause food spoilage . Also look for dan aged metal screwbands. If you use metal lids, he ize plenty of new ones on hand. They should r st be reused. If you use glass lids, use new rubber rings each time. Discard all damsged jars, used lids, rubber rings and rust} screwbands so you don't use them by mistake. ■Now for the most import.art equipment of all— canners! For canning nigh acid foods such as tomatoes and fruit, you'll need a boiling water bath canner. \ny large kettle with a rack and tight fitting lid can be used as long as it is deep enough to allow two inches of boiling water over the tops of the jars. For canning low acid foods, like vegetables , meats, fish and poultry, a pressure canner with an accurate gaucs or weighted pressure regulator MUST be tsed. PRESSURE CANNER FOR RENT If you're thinking about buying a pressure canner, but are concerned atxit the acceptability of the canned produc ? to your family, this may be the answer. I will be renting out the pressure canner iron my office to M.D. of Cardston residents. A deposit of $50.00 will ?e completely refunded to you upon return ?f the canner. If you are interested, plsase give me a call at 653-4848. There will be a food pres srvation workshop on July 19th from 10.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the conference room it the Provincial Building in Cardston. THE DAYS OF SUMMER In the sultry days of summer when the sun is merciless. Then the hay is swathed and windrowed and its fragrance a caress. In the hottest days of August there’s a cricket in the crack. Then the wheat is waving bravely and a shimmer dims the track. Oh, the sultry, hazy summer . makes a crop ripe overnight. So the haystacks grow in number while the fledglings take to flight. Though the breathless days of summer soon give way to autumn frost. Let us toil and sweat and struggle lest abundance might be lost. We remember sultry summer we recall the lark at dawn. So we’re thankful for the dog days and the strength to carry on. A. Smith gathered July 7 th and 8th in Magrath for a family reunion, coining from California, Utah, Idaho, and points in Canada. This pioneer cotpie and their 8 children came frcm Idaho to Cardston in 1900 and to Magrath in 1901. Richard's brother Jesse Smith was involved in building the Kimball Irrigation system and urged his brother to cone to Canada. When that was completed Charles Ora Card sent Jesse Smith, Levi Harker, Ammon Mercer and others to settle the town of Magrath. While in Magrath 2 more children (one was my father Morgan) were bom to Richard and Evaline. In 1907 they left Magrath to homestead in the Champion area. Grandmother Smith loved Magrath and when her husband died in 1910 she brought, him to Magrath for burial. Many of our relatives are also buried in the Magrath cemetery. As part of the Friday activities a bus tout was conducted retracing Grandfather Smith's entry into Canada through the Immigration Gap and stopping at the headgates in Kimball where Richard and Jesse worked prior to coming to Magrath. Lots of other activities were enjoyed- races, ball games, a program and dance. The visiting ended on Sunday with church services in Chanpion and a dinner. Magrath was chosen for all the reunion because of our roots and also for its variety of good recreational facilities. This reunion helped me not only appreciate my heritage but also appreciate the fine town that we are fortunate to live in. We take for granted the many facilities and their easy access. Our town has so much to offer- a beautiful fish pond, ball diamonds, play grounds, swimming pool, etc. Our visitors thought the town was so beautiful and pleasant. Many especially enjoyed their stay at Mark Passey's modern R.V. park- an excellent facility and asset to our town. On behalf of the Smith Family, I want, to say Thank-you to all you friendly people and especially to the town workers who work so hard to keep our town beautiful. Thanks too for mowing the field for us. Lorraine Balderson |29 FOODS --Ä. ' Cottage Cheese 4% and 2% Alpha 500g V9 Salad Dressing Kraft 250 mL 149 149 SUGAR 10,.
