Ron and Carol Smith recently travelled to Edmonton to attend a ceremony at which Carol's father, Dr. D.B. Robinson was presented with the 1990 Sir Fredrick Haultain Prize for science. This $25,000 award is presented annually to outstanding Albertans in 3 categories: Fine Arts, Science, and Education or the Humanities. The tribute to Dr. Robinson stated: In your distinguished career as a professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering you inspired and influenced many hundreds of young Albertans. As a researcher in your field, you formulated a mathematical equation which has become the standard for use in the hydrocarbon industry. Most recently you have established and directed a highly successful business venture which has brought economic benefit to Alberta as well as recognition to the pool of professional expertise which exists in this province. Your numerous accomplishments have assisted Alberta in becoming a significant forcein the scientific and technological world." John Gogo, Minister of Advanced Education, made the presentation on behalf of the Province of Alberta. The two other awards went to Tommy Banks for his contributions to the performing arts and to Dr. Shirley M.
