VILLAGE OF MILO MINUTES Minutes from the February 16,1999 Meeting The regular meeting o f the Village o f Milo was held on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at 7pm at the Village Office. Present were Mayor Bath, Councillor Vooys, Councillor Nelson, Municipal Administrator Dorothy Way and Scott Kovatch Economic Development Officer for the County o f Vulcan. The minutes o f the meeting held on Monday, January 18, 1999 were read. Mayor Bath moved the adoption o f these minutes. CARRIED. Councillor Vooys went to look at a garbage truck in Calgary. The truck was 7 years old and the cost was approximately $5,000.00. The rear end and the cylinders were leaking on this truck so the Village did not purchase it. The Village will keep looking for a used 1 ton truck. Municipal Administrator to find out whether the Village is buying or leasing the secuirty system, and if there is an excessive number o f false alarms who pays for the long distance phone calls. The Village will not be getting a new blueprint o f the sewer lines drawn up at this time as the quote we reveived from Lee Maher Engineering Associates was for $3,800.00 plus GST. The Municipal Administrator has not received a meter reading as yet to finalize the bill for the water Coop. Nothing to report on the recycling trailer at this time. The Village is awaiting more infromation from the Solid Waste Authority whose meeting is on Tuesday, February 23/99. Shawnee Eccavating will repair 10 feet o f sewer line west from manhole in front o f Lorraine Stumpf s as the sewer line is broken and needs to be replaced. The cost for this is approximately $2,500.00. MOVED by Councillor Vooys that the sewer line be repaired at the approximate cost o f $2,500.00. CARRIED. Mayor Bath to contact Rocky Wilson, Linda Booth, Deelane Simmonds, Lorraine Stumpf Elgin Bates and Betty Domoloewski when this is to be done. MOVED by Mayor Bath that the Village apply for the STEP grant for 1999. CARRIED. MOVED by Councillor Nelson that Reg Cusick be apponted as our assessor for the 1999 assessment. CARRIED. The Village has again been contacted to join the Economic Development Committee in Vulcan. Scott Kovatch from the Vulcan Economic Development Committee attended our February Council meeting. Mr. Kovatch exp alined that the economic development committee helps in starting small business's and that tourism brings dollars into the communities. They look at the strengths and weakness's o f starting a small business. Business counselling services are free. Councillors can go to their meetings, and i f your Village does not belong to the Economic Development Committee the Councillors are not allowed to vote on any isuues that deal with dollars. The Economic Development committee is involved in the following, non profit groups, selection committee's, external marketing, industry sector enhancement, sponsors business seminars, writes business and newspaper articles. They have information on income tax, accounting, a business library and they are linked to the Highwood Business office. They also work with the youth through youth achievement There meetings are the 2nd Thursday o f every month. I f the Village o f Milo decided to join a Councillor must sit on the board. Unfortunately there are several answers. Alberta Transportation feels the County should pay for more of the cost of the "better road" that we would like to see be built. If we were to agree to their terms I suppose we could go to tender right away. Now council needs to hear from our engineers to see if we can cut the cost somewhere. If not we will need more money which council may or may not want to spend. The poker game of politics is full of surprises. But I think when all is said and done we will be building part of 542 this year! The last word I heard about the transfer station is that they will soon be open. The contractor installed the wrong doors so he has to replace them at no cost to Solid Waste. Again I can say you will be using them this year. [I think], I would like to mention that the County Agriculture Dept, has a round bale processor for rent. If the dry weather continues some straw may need to be spread to control soil drifting. If you are thinking about retiring to Queenstown you will be interested to note that 18 lots have recently been sold, so some of the choice ones are gone now. Also there has been some interest in lots in Shouldice lately. Grant Lahd Every Day is Easter “Easter comes but once a year," So many people say. But, to a person saved from sin. It’s Easter every day! A man, when saved or "born again” His life, to Christ, will give. And, as a new-born babe in Christ, He’s just begun to live. “I am the resurrection, life”, . The Saviour, one day, said: “And he, believing in my Word, Shall live, though he be dead.” And that well known Apostle, Paul, In Philippi made plain; “For me to live is Jesus Christ, For me to die is gain.” So when the Blood of Christ, our Lord, Redeems a soul from sin; Every day is Easter, For Jesus lives within! — Carolyn Orr The Vulcan Advocate supports the Can Opener and the residents o f Milo and district c t ix t t n AROSE/ LUTHERAN EASTER SERVICES Palm Sunday March 28 - joint at United church 11 a.m. Good Friday at Lutheran church - breakfast 10 a.m. - service 11 a.m. Easter Sunday service at 9 a.m. Due to a busy spring schedule the Lutheran ladies will not be holding a Mother’s Day tea this year. Listening to the radio, I heard the disc jockey announce: This next record is for Pete Malloy, who is 111 years old.” There was a pause, and then, “My goodness, that is old, isn’t it!” Another pause. “Oh, I’m sorry. I got that wrong. This next record is for Pete Malloy, who is ill.” / ■/ / v / r / rf- / y- / y / YEAR END CURLING MEETING Thursday, April 22 8:15 p.m. at the Curling Rink Lounge All members please plando attend MILO COURTESY CAR Leaving Milo first & third Thursday at 1:00 P.M. for Vulcan April 1.Betty Nelson April 15. .Jean Umscheid May 6.Sheila Winch May 20.KayZaytsoff June 3. We are the only Service Club in the community but we are certainly not the only organization serving the community. We commended the Can Opener group for their excellent job, but our entire district is made up of people willing to give of their time and effort to make this a thriving community. We have the hall board, the restaurant board, the curling club board, the" town council, the recreation board and the list goes on. The Lions support them and they support the Lions. Levi Goodwin, a grade 10 student at Highwood High School in High River was awarded an all expense paid trip to the United Nations in New York. He won first place in “The United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth” speaking competion sponsored by the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Lodges. His speech was about The International Year of the Older Person, which the United Nations have proclaimed 1999 to be. Each year one student from each of the seven zones in Alberta is awarded the trip. The trip is about two weeks long and takes place in July. Last years winner in this zone was JanLaree Denbigh of Vulcan. Even though Lodges in this zone are located at High River, Cayley, and Blackie; the area extends from Carmangay to Okotoks and Nanton to Lomond. Second place winner in this zone wins a trip to Camp SUNIA (Seminar on the United Nations & International Affairs) which is held at Goldeye Centre near Nordeg. This year Michelle Lyckman of Carmangay placed second with her speech entitled The Queen of Hearts about the life of Princess Diana. Michelle is a grade 10 student at County Central High School in Vulcan. Every student (who is not a winner of the trip) that participates in the speaking competition is also entitled to apply for a scholarship through the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Alberta when they they go on to post secondary education. Rheanna Flitton of Champion was awarded a $500.00 scholarship last year. To win these trips, students age 15 to 18 compete in a public speaking competition, speaking 8 to 10 minutes on a topic pertaining to the United Nations or world affairs. In New York they will be part of 150 students from all over the world touring the United Nations. Over the summer 750 students will have completed the tour. This year is the 50th consecutive year the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges have sponsored this event. This years contest was held at the Blackie Odd Fellow Hall in Blackie March 14/99 at 1:30 p.m. Chairperson was Shirley Zuehlke, from Fairview Rebekah Lodge in Blackie. 1999 is the 180th Anniversary of Odd Fellowship. The Rebekahs and Odd Fellows welcome new members. We are striving to make this world a better place in which to live. Odd Fellowship is an International Fraternal organization with various charitable works in communities. One of our more recognizable is the tab program to help buy wheelchairs for those is need. Please save your tabs - they can be taken to any of the schools in the area. We also welcome any inquiries. Milo Students' Union is sponsoring a new exciting "juggling" program for all students in our school. To get started we need about 300 lightweight scarves (chiffon is excellent!). If you have any you could donate they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. fee the ley® e f The Giandkids o f Sonny and Marina Vannatla, and Betty Domolewski, have been performing dance at the Yates Theatre in Lethbridge again this year. Both Jackie and Lindsey Domolewski performed in the Festival o f Stars on Mar. 6 th to a M l house, many from Milo and Lomond. With 6 years and 4 years o f dance instruction, both girls are now competitive dancing, recently competing in Dance Magic Nationals held in Lethbridge Mar 10 - 14th. Studios participating were Cranbiock, St Albert Sherwood, Edmonton, Calgary, Brooks, Fort MacLeod, Coaldale, Cardston, Lethbridge and Taber. First Place winners am eligible to go on competing in Aubum, Spokane WA, Portland OR and on to Seaside OR for the National Championships. Jackie, age 10, performed in. a Jazz group, a Ballet group, as well as a Jazz solo, and was happy with a 1st and 3rd trophy. Lindsey, age 6, performed with her Ballet group, and Jazz group and proudly shows o ff her two 1st trophies. But these two trophies didn't come easy fo r little Lindsey. Taking the morning o ff school. getting harr and makeup and costumes pressed for her performance proved to be very stressful as when mom, Jackie and Lindsey arrived at the Theatre they discovered that Lindsey's dance shoes were le ft81 homo! ! filiio GRSHDKID5 C om p e te in t e ih t e id ^ e Both Jackie and Lindsey have recently passed their Tap Exams with honors and are currently studying for their Ballet Exams. These exams are very strict disciplines and require many many hours o f classes, practices and far too many trips to Lethbridge and Taber. Mom gets a bit testy when things don't fall into place, yet as you may remember her predicament during last year's Tap Exam— "H er mother suffered minor m emory loss preparing fo r Jackie's tap exam which was held in Taber. Getting up early that morning, fussing and stewing o ver hair, makeup and dance attire, they were greeted to a fla t tire! Quickly on the rifad. her train o f thought reverted in the direction to the hr ice weekly trip to Lethbridge. To h e r surprise, once arriving in Lethbridge, a panic attact hit as they realized the tap exam was to be held in TaberJ A very sad and disappointed little face looked at her mother as the tap exam was missedl But hey, this year not only did they arrive in the right town, even 1 hour before the exam, they were also greeted with a standing ovation o f clapping and cheering from very understanding and supporting dance moms and dads! Another go round will take place in Lethbridge, April 8 to 11th, when Jackie and Lindsey wiH be competing once again. Hopefully with, their own dance shoes!! With little time till curtain call, they tied up a set o f Jackie's shoes, 4 sizes too big for Lindsey, and threw her o ff on stage telling her to smile for the audience! The Show Must Go On! Now Lindsey deserves to clutch on to those two trophies. as she entered the stags smiling at the judges, scrunching her toes so Jackie's shoes wouldn’t fall o ff,,, and yet she never missed a beat, kept her poise god performed the required number with sheer detenuinatian. Once the number was finished, their group ran o ff the stage towards the curtains waving their arms frantically, when Lindsey's acquired shoe flew o ff her foot and up into the black curtain. Quite an effective ending very much unplanned, yet surprisingly successful! You may not want to miss their year end performances to be held May 28 and 29 for two shows. The entire Studio o f Lethbridge and Taber w ill be showing o ff their dances as studied throughout this long season o f Sept through May. It is a very enjoyable, talented dance performances o f Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Modem dancing, from students age 3 to 18. Admission is very reasonable, less than S10, and can be ordered through Wanda Domolewski, o f o f Course their proud grandparents.
