I remember Phil, George and Luke Murakami; Bob Mikado; "Lanky" and "Little George" Kadanaga. They became our very best friends and assisted wherever they were needed. I always appreciated their willingness to carry water, help with the dishes and entertain the children whenever they were finished with their own work. Three years went by and our son was of school age. We were then transferred to our employers farm 10 miles N.W. of Magrath. We arrived on April 16,1945. This time it wasn't a new home to move into. Once again we were confronted with a challenge; farm land impoverished from wind and drought, no fences, no buildings to >speak of. The St. Mary River flowed within a few yards of the farm and was a great asset. Our employer was anxious to increase the cattle herd, raise sugar beets, peas, and corn for the canning factory and have a feed lot. After years of dedicated work, long hours and no holidays, most all the goals were achieved. Our family grew from 2 to 4 children. The 10 miles to Magrath for school church and social activities was an endless road we travelled all hours of the day and night. The children all received and graduated from 12 years of school at Magrath. They also obtained 100 % attendance on our church schedules. After high school each went to a college of their choice namely: Modern Business at Calgary, Lethbridge Junior College, the Medicine Hat College as well as NAIT at Edmonton. As the family left home to pursue their education and follow their employment, distant parts of the world took on a great importance to us. Great were our hopes that they would be protected from harm or accident and they were. Other parts of the world also became important to us a our grandchildren were either employed or went on missions to Japan, Germany, Brazil, Honduras and Hawaii. We now enjoy the Spanish and Portuguese languages sometimes spoken in our home; each language speaks the same thing; we love you and are glad we are a forever family. There is a special honour in our family as 5 people carry a much respected name Hyrum ALONZO II, Ervin ALONZO, Bart ALONZO, Kyle LON, ALONZO Tomas. We are a happy family with love for each other and for mankind. This year Lon and I will celebrate our 55th wedding Anniversary .A There is an old saying that 'The Family That Prays Together Stays Together'. Although in my mind this probably helps, you must do far more than that; like praise the good things your spouse and children do throughout the years, and get involved with your family. Not for just the one or two days set aside for it. Go to as many programs, sports events, or whatever your children and family are involved in. Get involved yourself and don't let someone else always "babysit"(for lack of a better word) your kids. Make them good losers because you can't always win. I always say a true sport shows his colours by the way he or she handles themselves when they come in second. In other words, try to win, but be a good loser, if you don't win. This will always make you sort of special and everyone will want you as their Valentine on all those special days as well as all year round Forest"Frosty:,Balderson. ¡VALENTINE SPECIAI Thursday Friday Saturday 1/2 PRICE Thursday / Friday Saturday ***************************** DOUBLE RACK 75% OFF ***************************** 1 RACK LADIES BLOUSES 1/2 PRICE ********* *********** ****** I ji 1 RACK I SLACKS 1 /2 PRICE Wle IM BWH FAMILY —by Ruth Hovey daughter of Moroni i Harriett Sheen Born in Cardston, the 10th of 13 children and lived in the Jefferson area. A moderate flat prairie landscape. Old Chief mountain was our backdrop and the Chinook wind a constant companion, except when the north wind wanted to show how much power it had mixed with much snow. Our home was situated on a slight incline and we could see for miles in every direction.Neighbourhood watch was in full operation: if your neighbour was fixing fence; cultivating a field; rounding up cattle or horses; you could watch, or more often than not, jump on a horse and go and give them help. All hands to help was the motto, as the seasons demanded the different activities of farm life. Summer activities brought gatherings of all race, colour or creed; no one was barred as the ' baseball season commenced. Saturdays all work ceased as people congregated at the various ball diamonds., to cheer for their home teams; no better games of competition were ever played in a World Series than the ones at Jefferson, Woolford, Taylorville, Del Bonita. Everyone attended either by foot, horseback or car. With few telephones and certainly no T.V.s, the ball games were the social, recreation and support groups all combined in one. As far as we knew the words depressed, stressed or bored had not been invented. Did someone say they had family reunions once a year? Our family bad one every Sunday immediately after church; everyone came. A menu of bottled beef, fried chicken with all the trimmings, topped by peach cobbler and home made ice cream with’pure cream in custard; a taste few of today's generation have experienced. With meals like that a tall lanky boy from Kimball found associa tion with our family quite enjoyable Marriage was solemnized and later a son and then a daughter joined out immediate family. Without our knowledge, a friend of our family, whom we had great respect for, secured employment for Lon and I with a sheep man, J.A.Ririe of the Magrath area. So, on Dec.16,1942, we loaded our belongings and two small children and headed for the Twin River area. We followed a trail into a ranch setting and unloaded the truck's contents into a newly built house. The next morning we surveyed our situation, which was to manage 3400 head of sheep, 30 head of cattle and other farm animals, plus hired men to cook for. We soon found out how well we had been schooled in our family for such an undertaking. Shouldering the responsibilities of early rising and attending to the work load, everything soon fell into place and we met the challenge and were happy. By spring the work load had increased, as farming commenced and sheep shearing tine drew near. There were horses to break and their feet needed to be shod. You can shape horseshoes by heating them in a coal stove and then shape them with a hammer. Just ask Lon. .HOVEYS Continued on page. The name was chosen on a motion by Isaac Sabey, seconded by A.J. Sabey and agreed to by other initial members: Geo.C Card, Wallace Dudley, Anton Gruninger, C.A.Passey, A.O. Peterson, H.H. Anderson, EL. Pharis, and C.M. Ackroyd. The Co-op became an agent for International Harvester with W.W. Austin as the first manager, G. G.Wooley as book keeper and John H. F. Green as auditor. The store was originally located in Wyman's Garage (presently Alberta Treasury Branch) In 1942 J.J. Strang became manager and purchased Wyman's Garage with Norm Christensen and Ross Whitehead as mechanics. James Fergusen worked as night watchman at $5.00 per month. Soren Sorensen, and later Ollan Henderson, was locker manager. 1944 the Co-op expended $12,000.00 to purchase the Godfrey Building and install a Storage Locker Plant. People for miles around relied on this Locker Plant to cut and to store their meat before the days of individual ownership of freezers. A Smoke House was also of much service to the community. An addition was added to the south of the present building, to accommodate IHC. G.G.Wooley was the manager at this time with Ruth Bingham as book keeper, Melvin Sabey and DeVar Coleman the mechanics, and O.D. Steed auditor. Jay Hamilton became manager in 1947 with Alex Poulsen over the garage and service station, Austin Bennett looked after the locker plant and Lee Dickson was hired on as a mechanic. Another change occurred in 1948 as Alex Poulsen became manager and Jay Hamilton and L.R. Jensen purchased the Wyman garage. Kristi Miller and Lyda Poulsen became the book keepers. 1949 saw the addition of Blair Sabey as Partsman and Winona Balderson as book keeper. R. Morley Tanner was auditor. Book keeper in 1952, Betty Bly; 1956, Joan Anderson and Margaret Blumel; 1957, Ruth Norton; 1958, Margaret Sabey. A Transport business was purchased from Norm Christensen and Earl Neilson in 1957 and Dale Toomer was hired to be in charge; providing Magrath and surrounding area with deliveries from Lethbridge In 1958 Gilbert Sheridan was employed as the butcher. The building in the back of the present day shop was built in 1960. This year also saw the addition of Ross Robinson as Partsman. A major change occurred in 1963 when the Locker Plant was removed. Other new employees in 1966; Doug Bly as Partsman, Robert Sabey as a mechanic. Blair Sabey became manager of the Co-op in 1967. Alex Poulsen retired in 1968 and the Transport was sold to Reid Gruninger. 1970 saw the relinquishing of the I.H.C. Truck Franchise. The latest changes are: Robert Berday - Handy man; Randy Ripley came to the Co-op in 1977 as an assembly Technician; 1983 Charlie Bly joined the staff as a Partsman; 1984 Fred Strafe Sr. became Manager. In 1985 the Magrath Cooperative Association chose to reorganize itself to provide parts, tires, and general hardware; to meet the needs of the farm community and citizens of Magrath. The service department is still in place and can fix almost anything. Current staff includes: Randy Ripley as Manager; Charlie Bly Parts and Service; and Dana (Sabey) Bruce book keeper since 1990. Present Board Members: Maurice Bevers(1987); Neil Miller (1988); David Taylor (1967); Dean Anderson(1970); Bill Peterson (1987); Rod Ririe (1987); Gerry Bennett (1978) In reviewing the past 50 years, the Magrath Co-operative Assoc. Ltd. has been involved in many changes, but due to the support of a strong membership, they have been able to adjust to changing times and a fluctuating economy. The future looks good and we are confident if we continue to offer the same good service and quality products to our customers we will continue to grow and prosper for another 50 years. FAMILIES . Strong families are the cornerstone of our society. Through the family, society renews itself in the bearing, rearing and protection of children. Families are the basic source of love, care, development and support for all their members-children, adolescents and adults. Our very existence today bears witness to the enduring strength of the family as an institution. Without healthy and strong families society, in any meaningful sense, would cease to exist, (taken from an Alberta Government paper) CONTEST Thank you for participating. Winner of one year's free subscription announced in February 17 issue of MAGRATH NEWS. THE STRENGTH OF A FAMILY Douglas Harker This morning as I took my daily dozen to the west, I noticed the moon just disappearing as the sun was coming up in the east. Sow like life that is, I thought. As our own lives are descending, new ones are coming to take our plac;, but most of us count our blessings in, what we have been able to accomplish When Mildred and I were first married, fifty three years ago we certainly wanted posterity, but our wildest dreams never imaged what it would amount to. We have been blessed with 8 children; now our children have families of their own. Our extended family numbers 32 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren Are there any values in family strength? Certainly some have said our posterity is ourimmortality It would appear that way when we look at it from a shortened version of the word.Immorality means endless Names rise and fall: there are not as many Harker families in Magrath as when my father's family was extant. What are the values of family strength? We would like to retire and go to town, but our family think of this old farm as home, and how could we possibly accomodate them all on a smaller acreage? Lance and Mark and their families have spent a lot of time this snowy winter skiidooing to their heat's content. It has been gratifying to see then so involved in fixing that old machine, for them and friends ,to run over the fields. When Brook and family were here from India in December one of the desires of his heart was to have his famil ride horses as he did here. Elane and Jacquie now live in Provo and Orem with loving families. Their husbands, Barry and Orrin(Butch) arrived here in the fall with no intention of working on our house but took over from me repairing sewer. Lance and DeNai looked after our property while we were away three years on missions and help whenever we need them. They have horses here. Brook and Kathleen were good to assist in many ways but will be in India another year for his work as a Drainage Specialist in Agriculture. Susan abd Keith keep our land cultivated, planted and harvested. They pasture many cows and calves in summer and fall on this farm. Joy and Ken Butler are involved in Pincher Creek in Chiropractic practice and community activities, but return to help with any emergency or dinner. They enjoy the freedom of letting their children explore old machinery and fields. Our second son Blair, loved the farm and enjoyed scouting, horses and hunting, but contracted leukemia and died in 1967. He was a willing worker in the hayfield, doing chores or assisting at harvest time. Mark, our youngest son, returned from seven years of school to become a Podiatrist in Lethbridge but enjoys living in Magrath with Cheryl and their children, David and Katie. They often help at the farm and are grateful for the freedom to relax and enjoy nature with family members. Harker Haven really rocks when we try to host our families with one bathroom, but in the summer they all appreciate the joys of exploring great spaces and having picnics in the backyard. "I praise loudly; I blame softly". FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS You are invited to an OPEN HOUSE in honour of long - time resident of Magrath "Sofia Bezprozwanna". WAR ON THE FAMILY ".indisputable fact is that whether deliberate or unintentional, a sort of ongoing war has been waged from the start by small but powerful groups against our most cherished social institution. At first, it was difficult for me to believe there were ordinary people walking about who intensely dislike the family. Not their own families necessarily, just the basic idea of the family-yours and mine, that is. Some of these people actively lobby .teach our students to disrespect it.
