Summary:An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News. The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content. Godiontons Mourn Loss Tragedy struck two of our own on Friday night in a car accident that claimed the lives of Crystal Godionton and her 61/2 month old son Michael. Crystal is die 19 year old daughter of Jim and Sue Godionton of Magrath. Crystal’s fiance, Barry York, was driving their car just a few kilometers west of Brooks on Highway #36 when an eastbour.d pickup teckzsn through a stop sign and slammed into the passenger side of their south bound vehicle. They were returning to their home in Lethbridge after picking up Michael from a week long visit with his grandparents, Wade and Wendy York of Tilley. Crystal was on die passenger side in the front seat of the car and Michael was on the rear passenger side. They both died at the scene of die accident and Barry was taken to the Brooks Hospital for testing. Everything appeared fine, but just to be sure he was sent to Calgary where he received a CT Scan and some grief counselling. Everything checked out fine. Jim believes he was released from the hospital Sunday morning. Jim says, ”He’s at his parent’s home right now, but he’ll be coming down here tomorrow.” (Iiiesday) “Mikey” was Jim and Sue’s first grandson. Jim says, ‘We have a dozen photo albums that are right full of pictures of this little guy. We were bound and determined to spoil him.” A loss such as this is incomprehensible for those who have net gone.: through it. But the Godlnnton fruity lr:s been so impressed with die “Pheicmexl support from-tiic cennmnity. There h ' just a steady support of people coming in and out all day long,” says Jim. “How grateful we are to be in such a small town where the whole town is your family. Both Sue and I come from fairly large families. but just the overwhelming support of everybody.” They are amazed by “people that we only see every six months that are here and willing to help.” The grieving period and the sense of loss will linger. We encourage the good, happy memories to surface and carry the Godionton and York families through this most difficult time. ♦ _ * Holiday Public Skating Hours DECEMBER 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. 29th 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. 31 st 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Rink closes at 5:00 p.m. 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Rink doses at 2:30 p.m. JANUARY CLOSED 1st 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. 2nd 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. 3rd CLOSED 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. DECEMBER 22nd 23rd 24th 25th 26th 27th . From Leonard & Trevor at the Rink *7 A Politically Correct X-Mas Twas the night before Christmas 2nd Santa's a wreck. flow to live in a world that's politically correct? His workers no longer would answer to "Elves". "Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves. And labor conditions at the north pole Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul. Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety, Released to the wilds by the Humane Society. And equal employment had made it quite clear That Santa had better not use just reindeer. So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid, Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid! The runners had been removed from his sleigh; The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A. And people had started to call for the cops When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops. Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened. His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened." And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows, Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation, Demanding millions in over-due compensation. So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife, Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life, Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz, Demanding from now on her title was Ms. And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion That making a choice could cause so much commotion. Nothing of leather, nothing of fur, Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her. Nothing that might be construed to pollute. Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot. Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise. Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys. Nothing that claimed to be gender specific. Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific. No candy or sweets.they were bad for the tooth. Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth. And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden, Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden. For they raised the hackles of those psychological Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological. No baseball, no football.someone could get hurt; Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt. Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe; And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away. So Santa just stood thdre, disheveled, perplexed; He just could net figure out what to do next. He tried to be merry tried to be gay, But you've got to be careful with tint word today. His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground; Nothing fully acceptable was to be found. Something special was needed, a gift that he might Give to all without angering the left or the right. A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision, Each group of people, every religion; Every ethnicity, every hue, Everyone, everywhere.even you. So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth. "May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth." <MAGRim http://www. wards, net/- bill/humor/xmas/pc-xmas, shtml Submitted by Alan Thompson Published weekly on Wednesdays by Keyline Communications Box 179, Magrath, AB TOK 1J0 Ph: 758-6911 • Fx: 758-3661 email magrathnews@telus.net Ad deadline is Friday at 5pm and may be dropped off at the Magrath Pharmacy or at Keyline Communications’ office at 14 Centennial Place, Duane & Canna Thomson’s home. The Bylaw prohibits the use of any such weapons in the Town of Magrath. The penalty for using such a weapon has been increased from $100 to $1,000 per infraction. PIONEER IRRIGATION AREA OF CANADA Magrathites Dance With Wolves TOP: Audra Foggin and son, Carson, stand with Floyd Red Crow duringfilming of “Dreamkeeper”. Red Crow was one of the characters in Kevin Costner’s, "Dances With Wolves”. RIGHT: Audra Foggin and Tarrel Harris in Costume. At the end of this month, ABC television will be airing a Hallmark Hall of Fame production called "Dreamkeeper". It turns out that the mini series has a Magrath connection. In the spring of 2002 a casting call was made for extras to be in an Aboriginal film that would be produced during the summer in the southern Alberta area. Specifically, the film makers were looking for people who could authentically portray Native Americans in the movie. Tarrel Harris and Audra Foggin (along with Audra's sons, Cody and Carson) answered the call. Tarrel and Audra shared the advantage of a Cree heritage. Tarrel's mother, Lois, is from the Peguis First Nation in Manitoba and Audra is originally from the Frog Lake First Nation in northern Alberta. The audition was hardly a glamorous experience as hundreds of potential extras were herded through the Lethbridge Lodge to fill out forms and be photographed. The local would-be movie stars met the requirements and so for two weeks during the summer, they were in the movies. Tarrel said the experience was a lot of "hurry up and wait" and she gained a true appreciation for the hours involved in making minutes of a feature film. Each day started with getting on a bus in Fort Macleod at 6 am to then travel to the location with make up and costumes taking most of the morning and perhaps actually being filmed for a few minutes late in the day. Then it was back home again at night, only to be travelling back to Fort Macleod early the next morning. The most interesting part of the make up and costumes was the fact that every person who would be on camera was subjected to full head to toe body paint every morning. The lights and cameras wash out a lot of skin color so to insure the natives skin all appeared consistent in color, everyone started each morning in lhe paint booth. Considering the hundreds of performers, that was a lot of paint Tarrel said it was awful stuff to get off. Both Audra and Tarrel were impressed with the authenticity achieved in the making of the movie. The costumes and sets really made them feel like they were in the 1800's. Of course, die untouched landscapes in the Crowsnest Pass contributed to the effect. Tarrel did mention that it was comical to see all the natives in leather and loin cloths lounging around in the hot sun under large golf umbrellas sipping botded water. Then when it was time for a shot, all the modem conveniences would be hidden out of sight in the tepees. Audra was able to put her riding skills to use, as well. One day, the film makers were short of male riders and after unsuccessfully trying to find some guys that could ride decided to take a chance with Audra, who assured them that she could, in fact, ride. Audra said she didn't recognize herself after the make up professionals were done. She looked like a young native man and according to Tarrel, she rode better than most All four Magrath extras would agree that it was fun learning how movies are made and it was very interesting meeting the famous actors that they’d seen in movies and on TV. Audra's sons made quite an impression with their patience and cooperation. The set was a hot, tiring place for everyone and children that could handle the stress were noticed. They've actually received calls to audition for other features and may enjoy doing more work of this type in the future. Tarrel noted that it is hard for her to watch movies now without thinking about everything Audra Foggin with son Carson ^Merry 'Christmas "from Ton of Sun Tanning We have gift certificates for that perfect gift. A BROTHER LIKE THAT Author unknown A friend of mine named Paul received a new automobile from his brother as a pre-Christmas present. On Christmas Eve, when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. “Is this your car, Mister?” he asked. Paul nodded, “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy looked astounded. “You mean your brother gave it to you, and it didn’t cost you anything? Gosh I wish. He hesitated, and Paul knew what he was going to wish. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, “Would you like to ride in my automobile?” “Oh, yes, I’d love that!” After a short ride the urchin turned, and with his eyes aglow said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?” Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop right where those steps are?” the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while, Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying a his little polio-crippled brother. He sat down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up right against him and pointed to the car. “There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas, and it didn’t cost him a cent, and someday I’m gonna give you one just like it; then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.” Paul got out and lifted the little lad into the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when He said, “IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE.” This Program is not available after January 31, 2004. Australian Team attending Christmas Classic The Magrath Zeniths will have some down under competition this year as a team from Australia will be competing in the three-day, fifth annual Christmas Classic, January 1 - 3. The Sidney Siders, a dub team composed of 17 and 18- year-olds, three of whom are 6 foot 9, will be tough competition for the boys, says one of the tournament organizers, Brad Sabey. Other teams on the boy’s side indude Cranbrook, Iloydminster, Airdrie, Taber, Immanuel Christian and Ponoka the number one ranked 3A team. On the girl’s side the teams will include Cranbrook, Airdrie, Iloydminster, Taber, LCI, Cochrane and Okotoks along with the Magrath Pandas. The Australian team was looking for tournaments in Alberta and was referred to Magrath by Mark Hogan an organizer with STARS basketball in the province who had high regard for tlie Christmas Classic, said Sabey. The Australian players, like other out-of-town competitors, will be staying at the Ramada Inn in Lethbridge. The Zeniths, ranked ninth in the province, have been in the finals of the Christmas Classic every year, winning it the first season and are the defending champions again this year. Neither the boys, coached by Ron Strate, nor the girls, coached by Tom Alston, will have an easy time getting to the finals though as 12 out of the 16 teams at the tournament will be ranked out of the top 4A in the province, said Sabey. “It will be a tough tournament,” he predicted. Rather than individual stars, the local teams will be relying on a group effort to get them to the finals, he said. ♦ Seasons Greetings Lance Miller Agent - Sutton Group Lethbridge 634-1778 MLS Suttek L ■ .J» s CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY CLEANING * Walls * Windows * General Cleaning * 758 - 6414 Cell 308-6580 Magrath The 5th Annual rNIAS January 1-3,2004 Tickets $15 at the Door Boys Invitational Basketball Tournament Consolation Championship Saturday 12:15 pm Karren Gym Friday 3:45 pm Auditorium Australia Friday 12:15 pm Auditorium Magrath Sat. 12:30 pm Auditorium Sat. 3:45 pm Karren Gym Home Team is on the bottom Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament Consolation Taber Championship 'T Saturday 10:30 am Karren Gym Friday 5:30 pm Auditorium Friday 2:00 pm Auditorium Magrath Sat. 10:30 am Auditorium Sat. 2:00 pm Karren Gym Home Team is on the bottom Student Teachers in Magrath by Rick Humphreys “It is widely known that graduates from the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge are highly rated by school boards across the province,” states a news release from the University of Lethbridge. Administration and teachers in the Magrath schools heartily agree. According to the elementary school principal, Mrs. Brenda Beck, the U of L student teachers “are the very best prepared to be teachers, because they have such a good balance between theory and practical teaching.” The student teaching (practicum) program gives students the opportunity to put their new teaching knowledge and skills into practice in real classrooms. There they are supervised and mentored by teachers who volunteer to have them in their class. Through the four years of practicum experience they progress from a 6 week observational role to a whole semester of participating and teaching half-time in the classroom. The U of L news release reports that “25% of the Westwind teachers participate in die program from the U of L.” The Magrath schools take in a total of between 4 and 8 student teachers per semester, most of them teaching in the elementary school. While the student teachers are gaining valuable experiences through the program, the students and staff also benefit. “They are a bright spot for both faculty and students while they are in the school,” says Mrs. Beck. When asked for one of the ways the teachers benefit she responded, “They help the teachers reflect on their own teaching practices.” Cory Beres, from the Junior High says, “They are very professional young people with lots of good ideas and new ways of teaching.” Grade five teacher, Lorna Domer, has been hosting student teachers in her classroom for 25 years. She values their new ideas and strategies for managing the classroom environment, as well as new ideas for lesson presentation. Having the student teacher working with the students also allows her time to sit back and observe the students. The student teaching program is a win-win-win situation for the teachers, student teachers, and students. ♦ LETHBRIDGE TRAVEL Main Office: 328-7678 Fx: 328-9051 PLACES THAT WE WILL VISIT Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Caesarea, Nazareth, Capernaum, Sea of Galilee, Mount of Beatitudes, Jericho, Dead Sea, Golan Heights, Jordan River, Masada.
