MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents Wednesday March 24, 1993 * .(• VICTORY ! HOW SWEET IT IS!!! MAGRATH ZENITHS CAPTURE 4 A BOY'S PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP Danny Balderson, Kevin Cook, Bart Harris, Paul Hunt, John Kendrick, Aaron Kinder, Cassio Maffia, Darin Ogden, Cristiano Ruy, Russell Tanner, Justin Wood. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Fire Trucks and Ambulance were to meet the team in Welling to give them a royal escort home. However, driver David Lowry, perhaps fuelled by the excitement of the win, arrived home just as the trucks were pulling out of the station. Nevertheless, with sirens blowing and the town siren set off as well, the team knew we were glad to have them home. Over 300 hundred people turned out to greet the Team and Cheerleaders, (who you will remember are also Provincial Champs), at the School at approximately 6:15 p.m. Principal Nordquist officially welcomed the Team home followed by Coach Tim Tollestrup comments on the * games. Each player had an opportunity to express his feelings as well. When asked by the Magrath News how he felt to have Magrath School bring home the Trophy, Principal Nordquist enthusiastically replied, "They did a TERRIFIC JOB; it was the culmination of all they have worked for". THE GAMES 2200 fans witnessed Magrath win their first Provincial High School Basketball Championship in 15. years; defeating the Raymond Comets 83-67 in the Final Game at the University of Alberta gymnasium in Edmonton Saturday night (March 20). Magrath fans could be seen everywhere; an estimated 600 loyal Magrathites were in Edmonton to cheer their team on to Victory. The Zeniths played superbly all weekend; reeling in three (3) straight wins with a very solid defense. GREAT TEAM WORK and CLUTCH SHOOTING! > Zeniths opened the Tournament with a 116-100 victory over Red Deer. BART HARRIS had 33 points; DANNY BALDERSON added 27; and CRISTIANO RUY 20. In the semi-final Zeniths defeated Ross Shepherd Thunderbird 94-79 before a packed house at Jasper Place High School. DANNY BALDERSON proved unstoppable as he poured in 37 points; CRISTIANO RUY Was a power on the boards and contributed 28 points. In the Championship Game Zeniths led throughout; up 40-28 at the half, and held their composure for the 16 point victory. DANNY BALDERSON was top scorer for the Zeniths with 26 points and CRISTIANO RUY and AARON KINDER had 20 points each. Initially, the greenhouses were used primarily for the production of Bedding out plants and other Spring Crops. Then in 1986 we started into the Cucumber business. Two years later we began growing Cut Flowers. Presently we operate 7000 square feet of greenhouses; growing BEDDING PLANTS and SPRING CROPS from February to June; CUCUMBERS from July to October; and one house of ALSTROEMERIA (Dutch Cut Flowers) year round. We are primarily a Family operation, but do employ seasonal full and part-time staff during our busy times. As well 'Hoibak Greenhouses' operates a LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION and MAINTENANCE Business. We have experienced steady growth over the past 14 years and attribute a great deal of our success to the patronage of our local customers. Thanks! FAMILY Ken married Judy (Hillmer) in 1973. Judy works parttime in the School Library and in past years has been indispensable as she accompanied many soloists and Classes in Music Festival. As well she has been involved in all of the Drama productions put on by the Magrath School. REMINISCING Comments from Ray Stevenson "It was very different for me this time to attend the Provincial Basketball Tournament as a fan rather than as a coach. But both times have been very exciting". In 1978, with Dave Lowry as the assistant coach, the Zeniths were ranked second in the Zones. "We met LCI in the finals, after winning our first two games. Although we were the underdogs, we knew we had a chance. We used a 3-1 zone that they just could not penetrate. We came away with the Championship after a 48-40 win. The fan support was unbelievable, as it was at this tournament". "This Zenith's Team (1993) played every game very well. They worked together as a team. They looked for the man in the clear, and then got the ball to him. I felt that AARON KINDER played an outstanding game. "I believe Phil Tollestrup and Assistant Coach Darryl Christensen did an excellent job. In my opinion a key change for the Zeniths was when Phil alternated DANNY BALDERSON to guard position. Previously the team had trouble getting the ball to him, but by having Danny bring the ball up the floor, Phil maximized his effectiveness. The home support was again unbelievable. After the win everyone from Magrath stood and sang the school song.; twice even. People from larger centres commented that there were more fans from Magrath than from any other community, and how impressed they were that such a small school could field such an all round excellent team. It's been 15 years since the last win; let's hope it won't be that long until the next one. 1978 LINE-UP __ Tom Dudley, Doug Evers, Brent Johnson, Brad KarrenX Cory Michaud, Bart Milner, m Ron Rice, Rob Ripley, $ Terry Shannon, Brent Taylor, Darrel Taylor, Greg Woodbury SPORTS BRINGING HOME THE GOLD!!! Two Magrath students, ALEESA NELSON (grade 7) and HEATHER MCKELVEY (grade 5) are members of the Lethbridge Figure Skating Precision team the ICE CRYSTALS. This past Saturday, they travelled with the 18 member girls team (ages 7-13) to compete at the 1993 Sunlife Winterskate in Red Deer. They captured the SILVER MEDAL in the Juvenile Division of the precision competition. Their "big sisters" the ICE GEMS, (AGES 15-22) won the GOLD MEDAL in the Senior Division. Then to round off the weekend, it was on to the Black and Gold Precision Skating Competition on Sunday in Leduc. They beat several teams there to win the GOLD MEDAL in their Division. The ICE CRYSTALS were awarded FIRST ordinals (marks) from the presiding judges. CONGRATULATIONS ALEESA and HEATHER!!! BOXING Magrath can be proud of yet two more Champions: WADE and CURTIS HATCH. These brothers both won provincial boxing titles in Spruce Grove as members of the Lethbridge Boxing Club over the weekend. WADE HATCH moved up from the Novice to the Junior Open Division and defeated National Champion Jason Smith of Red Deer with a second-round technical knockout in the 60 kg division. The victory gives Hatch a berth into the Junior Nationals in Newfoundland April 68th. He will first attend an Alberta team training camp before heading to Newfoundland April Sth. Meanwhile CURTIS HATCH, a former Canadian Champion, returned after a two- year absence from the ring and won the 75 kg Senior Open Division. Hatch opened with a first round TKO of William Lambert of Slave Lake and then defeated Marty Melenka of Edmonton by decision to win the Provincial Title. Magrath will watch Wade in Newfoundland, with interest and as well when both Wade and Curtis head to the B.C. Gold Gloves in Vancouver May 6-7th. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU HOCKEY SCEPTERS MIDGET HOCKEY TEAM Talented, dedicated, and crowd pleasing describe this team based in Magrath, but consisting of players from Cardston, Raymond, and Magrath. Participating in the Southern Alberta Spud League this season, they finished at the top with 10 wins, 3 losses and will play the winner of the Coaldale-Foremost match for the Provincial Championship in this league. These outstanding young men travelled to Elk Point AB for the Provincial Midget Championships this past weekend, and were treated first-class all the way. The whole town and neighbouring communities, from kindergarten age to Senior Citizens, put on a week-end that 'almost' equalled the hockey. Approximately 50 parents and boys made the trip. GAME 1- Athabasca - Zone 3. Along with different faces came a whole different way of playing the game, setting our team back on their heels for the first frame. Finding themselves down 7-2 halfway through the game, the boys started climbing out of the hole. They chipped away and with dogged determination finally gained the lead; then they tucked in an insurance marker and skated off with the first win under their belts. SCOTT TAKAGUCHI, with a little luck, started the comeback streak, while STEVEN VEALE and RYAN CHIPMAN took turns providing faultless goaltending in the 9-7 win. GAME 2- Beaveriodge -Zone 1. This proved to be a tight-checking, fast-skating match and required an ’all-out' performance from the SCEPTERS; which they were more than willing to provide. They knew that any lapses were costly. Fans were treated to an excellent game that went right down to the wire. The defensive squad played exceptionally well, but injuries were already taking a toll. TOM BINGHAM was sidelined with a shoulder injury along with CHRIS YANKE, while JEFF KAWADE saw limited ice time due to some heavy stick work with Athabasca. ROBERT BRANDT, KEVIN STRATE, SCOTT JOHNSON, and JAMIE WAKEFIELD all pitched in with a double effort to form a solid wall along our blue line. GAME 3- Marwayne -Zone 2. A piece of cake! The SCEPTERS set to work having some fun, and scoring lots of goals. MITCH BEAZER, MARC HEGGIE, and JASON RIPLEY put together some of the prettiest ’ti-tac-toe' plays; the hot offense provided a well deserved rest for the defense as they tromped over the Marwayne Elks 11-3. The third victory qualified the SCEPTERS for the SEMI-FINAL match with the Warburg Mustangs from Zone 4. The boys picked up right where they had left off, with all three lines getting in on the scoring. MATT VISSER made his presence felt, along with TREVOR DUNLOP and BRADY ZUBACK when they had to pick up the slack after yet more injuries; this time to Captain DAN BAKER. DAN had worked tirelessly setting up TAK SARUWATARI, MATT VANDENBERGHE, and ARLLN SILVERMAN, who helped make it easy by being right where they were supposed to be! The SCEPTERS thoroughly whomped Warburg 10-2 and were in the final game. Continued. One tiny thought one tiny word May give a great one birth, And, if that thought was caused by me, I lived a life of worth. Richard F. Wolfe Leaves of Gold " Besides theology, music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart like that induced by the study of the science of divinity. The proof of this is that the Devil, the originator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles, flees before the sound of music almost as much as he does before the word of God. This is why the prophets preferred music before all the other arts, proclaiming the word in psalm and hymns. Do you know what they are? Do you know where they come from? Do you know that from some places in the North, you can see Northern Lights in the South? I saw Northern Lights from my south window when I was living in the little Northern Alberta town of Fort Vermilion. Let me tell you about them. Northern Lights is just a nick-name. Their real name is AURORA BOREALIS. Perhaps they were named after the Roman Goddess of Light, Aurora. Her job was to open the gates of Heaven each day, and let the sunshine in. No one seems sure what causes the Lights. Some scientists say it is protons and electrons shooting from the sun. Then these particles react with the earth's magnetic field. Northern Lights and Sun Spots seem to be associated, but scientists don't know what causes the spots either. The Cree Indians in Northern Alberta, say Lights appear when the spirits of the dead are wandering across the sky. They also say, you must never dance under them, or your Spirit may have to travel through all eternity. The Indians around Yellowknife, in the North West Territories, say the Lights come from the windows of the people who live inside the earth. This is interesting to me, because Lights are seen best in the months of April and October. These are the months that many mothers do their spring and fall housecleaning. These are the months when windows are gleaming bright, and best reflect the light. Aurora Borealis do not appear the same from one time to another. They are constantly changing. They seem to have a choreographer, or dance teacher, to put together something different for each show. I turned out my lights at bedtime one night, and my room was filled with an eerie green glow. I looked out the window, and the north-west comer of the sky had turned a brilliant green. As I watched, this bright green stretched across the heavens, and then died away into a pale green shadow. It looked like someone had spilled a bucket of fluorescent paint in the comer of the sky, and the paint thinned and faded as it spread towards the east. Another very still night, I looked up, and it seemed a giant had thrown a handful of hugh, pale yellow feathers across the sky. Those feathers must have made him sneeze, for suddenly they jumped and tumbled about, then settled peacefully across the floor of the sky. The giant sneezed again, and sent them tumbling over and over. A friend and I were walking home another night; it was shivery cold and grave yard quiet. We noticed faint white spots appearing and disappearing in the northern sky. We had been told that whistling or singing would make the lights brighter. We had also been told that waving cloths under the Lights would make them dance. So, while my friend whistled and yelled, I waved a sheet in the air as hard as I could, to see what would happen'. Nothing seemed to, and since we were freezing, besides feeling pretty silly, we went ipside, settled ourselves in front of our south window, and waited to see what would happen. Slowly, the spots brightened, then turned pink. Suddenly, the southern sky exploded with colours; pink and purple; blue and green; yellow and white. The Lights danced and waved. They died away in one spot and burst out in another. They soared, like rockets trailing sparks. They wove and twisted in and around each other like ribbons, practising on their own for an Olympic competition. They stretched and flew in bright bands, resembling silk scarves caught in the wind. They spread out. They narrowed down. They flashed. They faded. They filled the whole sky with brilliance. Then, as though someone had flicked a switch; the Northern Lights were gone. Are they protons? Are they electrons? Are they spirits? Are they magic? I don't know. I do know that Nature's Northern Lights can put on a display that even Walt Disney would have a hard time equalling. Their experience last year gave them an edge The boys gave it all they had, but just weren't able to gain the momentum they needed getting SECOND PLACE in the tournament. Our boys deserve recognition for EXCEPTIONAL HOCKEY and GREAT TEAMWORK ! The SCEPTERS tied for FIRST in total wins; scored the most goals; had the least penalty minutes; were a close second in goals against, and were the friendliest bunch there. A GREAT JOB!!! A Big Thank you to coaches Robin Chipman, Gene Kawade, Duke Wetherelt and Manager Garth Veale. We had like lots of fun, but one thing really worried me. He kept scratching, like all night long. After each scratching session he would like clean his fingernails. It kept me wondering, like, what's with this guy? Other than that, we like had a way good time. My like question is like, what is wrong with him? Signed, Bewildered DEAR BEWILDERED; Many people scratch. Many people clean their fingernails. Perhaps he was nervous, or selfconscious or did he smell a little -off? Interesting how one virtue, when given exaggerated or fanatical emphasis, can be used to batter down another, with freedom, a virtue, invoked to protect a vice. Those determined to transgress see any regulation of their life-style as interfering with their agency and seek to have their actions condoned by making them legal. People who are otherwise sensible say, " I do not intend to indulge, but I vote for freedom of choice for those who do." Boyd K. Packer A MAN WHO KNOWS HIS WORTH The machine in the large plant stopped working and everything came to a grinding halt. A repairman was called in. He merely tapped the machine with a hammer and it began working again. When he submitted a bill for $250.00 the plant manager felt the charge was too high for one little tap of the hammer, and demanded an itemized bill. The repairman complied with the request and sent a second bill. It specified: Tapping with Hammer $1.00 Knowing where to Tap $249.00 Wrench Set Drop forged carbon steel SAE sizes 3/8“ ■ I-1/4". ïtâowiiiô y HOME GARDEN SEEDS 79 CENTS per pack 5 I 1.00 HOM£GD 6ARPEMR SPRING & SUMMER CATALOGUES If you didn't get one in the mail see us!!
