Farmers often ask. about hew to be sure that all income and expenses for the year are recorded. If you follow consistent procedures, concerns about not reporting a major expense or revenue can be eliminated. Use a duplicate deposit book and deposit all income, every last penny, into the farm bank account. Write out a cheque for all expenses. At the end of the year your cheque book and deposit book will be a record of every penny that has passed through your farm. It takes a lot of practice to get into the habit of writing out the details every time. It's sometimes easier to stick with detailed recording if you remember how easy it will be to explain if you are ever audited. Start a new deposit book with each year. Make sure your deposit 000k makes a duplicate copy. Take the time to identify clearly the source of the income and what Droduced the income. If it is a gift from your rich Uncle Harry write "gift from Uncle Harry". Don't write the word "personal", you'll never remember what tliat means if Revenue Canada audits your books four years from now. ' As you write each cheque also write 'what the cheque covers - is it for chemicals, or lumber at your local general.store? Expenses under $5 can be handled in a couple of ways. If you buy all these supo- lies at one general store, set up an accour.u and pay all items in one monthly cheque. Keep sales slips and check them against the monthly statement. Or pay for small amounts during the month but keep each sales slip — make note on the sales slip of what was purchased - $1.10 for tacks, $2.50 for clips. At the end of each month add them together and write yourself a cheque to cover these expenses . Cash rhe cheque and put the money in your pocket. You now have one pile of bills stapled together that add up to the cheque total. Your records of farm income and expenses will be simpler and easier to keep accurate if you transfer money for Family living expenses to a separate bank account. Make transfers from your farm account on a regular basis and pay all personal living expenses from this personal account. Leona Quantz, D.H.E. When the hurricane-like (133+km) winds of Monday, January 30th were raging through the area, residents were heard to say "I'd much rather have the snow and the cold than this terrible. wind" - and "presto" in a matter of a few hours we have temperatures dropping from a +13'C to snow and cold and winds. Almost as if man had his way. Those people, who had to travel, work out of doors on construction, or feeding cattle, or whatever, found Tuesday’s conditions almost unbearable with the -34 "C temperatures and high winds prevailing throughout the day and night. The Hardware Department was busy with cattlemen seeking repairs and replacements for frozen water systems - and calving aids; motorists looking for more extension cords and travelling equipment. Those confine«} to their homes were praying that their waterlines would not freeze, the furnaces would keep running; the power would not go off. School was cancelled Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with classes resuming Friday. No temperature records were broken, however, throughout this time. Speaking of school - it was with a ' feeling of relief to everyone, we believe, that the impending strike between Southern Alberta teachers and School Boards was settled with a two year agreement. Another Semester is underway, and before we know it winter will be a thing of the past - and there will be other things to worry about. P.S. Johnny just informed us that a new display of Seeds has been put out in the Hardware - so be prepared for another outbreak of winter. In the forty odd years we have been . employed at the Magrath Trading Company it has never failed to storm on such occ sions. N.O.
