We’ve all heard horror stones of candy and fruit being tampered with, but actual incidences of this are rare, says Michael Taylor, spokesman for the National Safety Council. Still, to be on the safe side, throw away any fruit, homemade goodies and unwrapped or poorly wrapped candy, he adiases. Also, be sure to remove from preschoolers’ bags any candy small enough to choke on. 9 Making sure your kids are visible. Attach reflective tape to kids’ costumes, shoes and bags so they will be clearly seen by motorists, says Taylor. Eveiy child should also carry a flashlight so he’ll be easy to spot. —Barbara Smalley DONT SHARE TREATS WITH FIDO Chocolate can be deadly for dogs because of a chemical in it called theobronine, which dogs can’t digest and which has effects similar to caffeine, explains Atlanta veterinarian Alan Gordon, D.V.M. Only nine ounces can be fatal to a 20-pound dog, so store chocolate where your dog can’t get it. It’s not toxic to other animals. Last Halloween, Ruth Webb had a big argument with her 10-year- old son because she wouldn't let him go trick- or-treating unsupervised with his friends. This year there won’t be another fight because he understands that he simply can’t go trick-or-treating alone until he’s 12 years old. “He doesn’t like it, but he accepts it,” says Ruth. She’s right to stand firm on this, say the experts. When it comes to trick-or- treating safety, they recommend: ® Providing adequate supervision. Trick-or- treaters under age 12 tend to get overexcited on Halloween and may try to do something risky or dangerous without thinking, says Middletown, Connecticut, child and family psychologist Mark Kaplan, Ph.D. So they should always be accompanied by a parent or responsible older child. Depending on how safe you feel the neighborhood is, children in their early teens are usually mature enough to be trusted to venture out on their own in groups.
