NEWS This year’s White Cane Week is February 5th — 11th across Canada. Co-sponsored by the Canadian Council for the Blind (CCB) and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind employment and vocational counselling; adjustment to blindness programs; orientation and mobility training; rehabilitation teaching; technical aids assessment and blindnes (CNIB) this week of information and activities is designed to heighten public awareness about blindness and visual impairment. White Cane Week also promotes preventative eye care through regular eye examinations and through wearing proper protective equipment in sports and «n the job site. • White Cane Week began in 1946 as a means of identifying the white carEuser as someone with a visual impairment. As the travel aid most commonly used by blind and visually impaired persons, the white cane today symbolizes freedom and independence of movement. The CNIB welcomes White Cane activities each year because it gives a chance to increase neoples’ understanding of how blind and visually impaired people live in today's society. CNIB strives to help people reach the goals they have chosen to achieve. The theme this year SEE IT OUR WAY stresses the blind person’s point of view and how they see their world and the people around them. As the largest national consumer group of blind and visually impaired persons, the Canadian Council of the Blind wants to become more visible in the public’s eye. Besides increasing awareness about visual impairment, White Can Week also allows CCB "to speak as a uniform group across Canada on matters concerning blind and visually impaired persons of this country’. ( The Canadian Council of the Blind is a national organization of blind and visually impaired persons organized in 1945 to give blind Canadians a united voice in their own affiars. Previously viewed as a recreational and social organization, CCB is now anxious to project a unified voice as the largest national consumer group and to exercise a broader influence on issues affecting blind and visually impaired Canadians. The Canadian Institute for the Blind, created in 1918, is a nacional non-profit voluntary agency providing rehabilitation services to blind and visually impaired Canadians. Direct services include personal, prevention programs. Locally, services are provided througn service centres in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge. In Alberta and the Northwest Territories, over 3,000 people are legally blind. Slightly more than half of them are over the age of 65• Approximately 260 are under age 16. Between 75 and 80 percent c. these people have some usable vision. ' For more information contact: Steve Webb, Area Rep. Lethbridge £ Distrir C.N.I.B. Alberta - N.W.T. THE PICTURE OF YOUR LIFE If all the good you’ve ever done Was painted on a wall, Into a picture framed in gold, Would it be large or small? , If every smile appeared in blue Depicted as the sky, And clouds of black were painted on Each time you told a lie, . If trees of green would show each time You gave a helping hand, How many would your background show, How dense would be the stand? And if each act of kindliness Would mean a shining ray Of sunlight, on your work of art, Would it be light as day? Or would your picture look like night With skies more black than blue, And shadows dark, instead of trees? It all depends on you. For every man must paint his own And all the world will see It hanging in the halls of bliss For all eternity. — A. J.
