The village was spared any hail damage, but crops a few miles west were totally devastated. Damage to house siding and windows and to vehicles, trailers, etc. was common to those who happened to be in the path of the storm. AFSC has indicated that this storm cut a strip of devastation from west of Olds to the Milk River area and that the width of the storm varied from seven km to 50 km. It went through our area at about 3:00 a.m. August 3. Pictured above are a golf ball sized hailstone and the remains of a holiday trailer vent.Ad Rates Subscription Rates Business Directory $ 5.00 Milo $ 16.00 Quarter Page 6.00 (- pickup, delivery or mailed) Half Page 8.00 Mailed (outside Milo) 24.00 Full Pages 15.00 Single Copies 2.00 Classifieds 2.00 The fuiiuwinM items are free of charge Notices Announcements ( Wedding, Anniversary, Births, Showers, etc.) Cards of Thanks News items Articles Many ways to forward your articles, notices and advertising: Milo Can Opener Box 12, Miio, Aiberta, TOL 1L0 Email: help@milolibrary.ca or iqodkin@wiidroseinternet.ca Fax# 599-3850 e-mail is the preferred method if possible. Our hotel was great except for the windows that we could not close all the way and things were quite soggy by morning, but the transfer to our ship the MS Eurodam was smooth. Our first night at sea was a bit rocky and the next day we could not dock in Wamemunde (Berlin) due to gale force winds so we cruised to Tallinn, Estonia. Really enjoyed the sights and towns there. It’s a very clean and orderly country; the outdoor living museum was especially interesting. The next day we docked in St. Petersburg, Russia. What can be said about the beautiful sights to be seen there! Catherine’s Palace and Paul’s Palace were the first day iour with aii the sights in between, the lovely pine forests and gardens were magnificent. The next morning was spent on a city tour and then the Heritage Museum rounded out the day. Our ship had to be docked at the industrial port because of its size, so we did get to see the older parts of St Petersburg but it did rain the second day so luckily we were indoors for most parts. Met lots of interesting people on our ship; a family from Egypt, some fellow Canadians, some who knew where Milo was, our dinner mates were Americans and some very polite Japanese groups. The entertainment in the evening was lots of fun and varied for everyone’s taste. On shore exclusions, we had beautiful clean buses and the guides were very well versed, most spoke English with very little trouble. They were usually school teachers and were trained overseas so they were fluent in English, Spanish, Russian and German. Welcome to Helsinki, Finland on the south part of the coast, the most populated and richest part of the country. It is a city of million people. Being an outpost of the Russian Empire, it is now a showcase of independent Finland, being beautifully built during the last century. Our shore tour took us to many interesting churches and historic places out in the country. We visited a beautiful country home where we had lunch (egg butter) and other goodies. Then we enjoyed a walk through the hillside to a beautiful lake. The outdoor sauna was a big attraction as well as the unique farm house. Our journey continued onto Stockholm, Sweden, where the history of Stockholm begins with a legend from the era of the Vikings. Agne, a warrior king married a local chiefs daughter name Skjalf. She was won by Agne through war and as he stopped to celebrate, he and his friends got drunk and Skjalf freed herself. She returned with help and captured Agne and he was hung at the place called Stockholm. It is known that a castle and church were built there in the 13th century. Stockholm is built on fourteen small islands and it is considered Sweden’s most beautiful city. Our tour took us through the city where we watched the changing of the guards and many other interesting stops. We went to Sigtuna, the first Christian stronghold where we were delighted to watch the mid summers eve cobblestone streets with flowered wreaths, singing and dancing around the may pole. We also visited the Vasa Museum. From Stockholm we cruised to Kiel, Germany. There, we did a walking tour of the harbor and enjoyed Falls Ships “regatta”. Sailing ships from around the world weredocked with us and it was a beautiful sight to behold them as they were making their way to St Petersburg and back. We had decided to stay over in Copenhagen two days after our cruise so we had a wonderful city tour then transferred to our hotel. Our tour guide there had been across Canada as a worker with the Rodger Wittiker show, so he was interesting to talk with. We did the big walking tour though the Strozet (Pedestrian Street) with beautiful water fountains at every comer. We also visited the Royal Copenhagen Store along with / elevens, Burger Kings and KFC’s. The Tivoli Garden was just down the block from our hotel so we spent a lovely evening there enjoying the music in the bandstands and admired the flower gardens, etc, having a wonderful supper, BBQ ribs and beer. The Canal Tour took us through the inner Harbor to some of the most popular places to visit, such as; The Little Mermaid, The New Opera House, Christian VIII’s Palace and many other places too, numerous to mention. It is impossible to recall all the fun things we did and the laughter we shared during our trip but it’s always good to be home again! The Foothills Forage and Grazing Association is offering: Low-Stress Cattle Handling Clinic September 10, 2009 8:30am to 5:00 pm Robertson Ranch Longview Area registrations must be in by Sept. 4 for more info contact Laura at: (403)652-4900 or Michael Monner 599-3790 % 5ALOM hair design by Denise Brown and Norma Brown Cut*, C&lm4, PiWh4, K'bOM T cn,ll:Penise -Hunn^ 4-0?-f0t~707? A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. ’We must do something about father,’ said the son. 'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.’ So the husband and wife set a small table in the comer. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up. ’ The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that making a Tlivingf is not the same thing as making a ’life.’ I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. Ifve learned that you shouldnTt go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You nee d to be able to throw something back sometimes. I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch — holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.Handcrafted by G^acu- £BofvS-§cattc^<j<Mj3 Value of $475 $1.00 per Ticket Draw date: 0otc$}£A. 3 ®17tfo Saffl (Tai -z § 1#September2009 Volume 2, Issue 9 The Julie/Julia Project (http:// blogs.salon.com/ 0001399/2002/0 8/25.html) With the movie Julie & Julia opening recently, this website may gain some renewed interest. Thank you for your time and ideas. The Sack Lunches I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read, perhaps I will get a short nap, I thought. Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled ail the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. ‘Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, ;and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time. As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soiaier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base.' His friend agreed. I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. Take a lunch to all those soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a soldier in Iraq it's almost like you are doing it for him.' Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?' 'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. 'This is your thanks.' After we finished eating, I went again to the b ack of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five dollars. Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, an said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers. Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm. When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars! Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.' Ten young Canadian Heros left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little. A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to ' Canada ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.' May God give you the strength and courage to pass this along to everyone. ^Freedom Isn't Free Somebody PaidThe Queenstown Chronicles Tales of a City Boy’s move to Paradise. Allow me to introduce myself: First I should answer the basic question that I'm sure is in most everyone’s mind - just who is this Bozo? The short answer is Cameron Klem - Grant Lahd’s brother in law. The longer answer is Jo-Ann Lahd’s husband of some 25 years. My father explained a long time ago what my mission was. “Marriage is like this Cam” he said. “They give you children (something you can't do yourself) and then you work for them until you die. If you don’t like the rules, don’t sign up." (Yes my father Phil was a famous romantic.) So my stated mission is to make sure my wife and child Jessica “Live The Dream”. Jo-Ann’s dream was always to move back to the countryside of her childhood, so over the last few years we talked and made arrangements, fixed up our house in Calgary, and massaged Grant all in the hope of landing somewhere close to where Jo grew up. Our plans came together better than we had hoped, and we are now new proud residents of Queenstown. Our home is within sight of the Lahd family farm (now Rod & Leslie’s) where Jo-Ann grew up and Levona and Telford Dixon’s. Levona is Jo’s cousin and a best buddy. As a bonus for us we are also across the road from Kyle Lahd, Jo’s nephew. Poor Kyle - his nosy aunt and uncle are positioned with more than half the windows in their house facing his humble abode - which means he is under almost constant observation. No chance for the poor guy to entertain a lady without fresh nose marks on our windows and a call to the relatives. One day I saw smoke coming from the K-Man’s driveway and hurried inside to tell Jo-Ann. “Kyle’s got his barbeque going.1" I said and headed for my tongs and sauce, being a bit of a star in front of the grill and hoping to give Nephew some help and tips. "Relax!” Jo said. “He’s just burning garbage." It’s true - Kyle is much better known at the Milo Cafe than any cooking classes. (Blame Mom Betty for looking after him so well.) First Impressions: Please understand I still live in awe of each and every sunrise and sunset, the big sky, the clean air, and the wonderful friendly .people of Queenstown, Milo and the surrounding countryside. Your kindness, generosity and sense of community are no secret to you, but have been a stunning bonus to me. As our home came together, various tradesmen made the journey here. Universally two standard comments were made, and in this order: “Man you guys are in the middle of nowhere.1" (followed a moment later by.) “ You know it’s just gorgeous out heref I would always reply "Yes - please, don’t tell anyone." Cam meets the Killer Gumbo: I had no idea just how “special” our land is. Grant had explained the value of gravel for my driveway and walkways, and my kind wife had purchased me an official set of gumboots from the UFA, but I was just not ready. So mere days after having our lot finally profiled and driveway built, and missing the first good rain, I walked out to install my eaves trough downspout extensions, carefully staying under the eaves where it was drier. Unknown to me I was venturing onto 3 full feet of un-compacted clay that had been soaked by the downspout. Within seconds my right boot was in up to the label - about an inch from the top. My ieft ieg followed as I tried to stagger back. Here I was, in full sight of the road, in front of my house, a grown man, trapped like some six year old in muck. Worse than that, I had my nice cordless drill in one hand and a chunk of downspout in the other. Pride almost killed me. I was not going to leave a boot or two in the ground - they were brand new and on their first trip out! Yes, I called out for my wife. No, she could not hear me from inside the house. I grunted and heaved, digging myself deeper until I was truly desperate - so desperate that I had to throw my drill back onto dry dirt (just a couple of tantalizing feet away) and use my bare hands to begin to dig out enough mud to let air under my boots. The operation took fully fifteen minutes, during which I weighed the value of dying from a heart attack and being found right there rather than having people drive by and run off the road laughing at my efforts. I emerged soaked and dripping with sweat, carrying three inches of mud on the sole of each boot, and my groin muscles strained the point I couldn’t lift either foot. Jo-Ann looked out the living room window to see a Frankenstein like figure lurching towards the garage, swinging his feet out to the side in a strange attempt to walk. Only true love and concern for her idiot husband kept Jo from fading down laughing. (Jo will tell you that men are idiots, and she married their King.) We get Reality TV - The Cow Channel: Part of “The Plan” was to use the piece of land next ours as a sort of holding area for cattle that were for one reason or another not really in shape to make the trip to the leased land out east. (Think of these cows and calves as the “B Team”.) So all of a sudden here I was, responsible for watering and monitoring about 20 cows and calves. We were supplied with a round blue plastic watering trough, a couple of salt blocks, and rudimentary instructions. I explained to Kyle that I didn’t really know much about cattle. "That’s fine Cam" Kyle said, "Can you do this?" Kyle shot both arms straight out from his sides as if to block someone from passing. " Trust me, that's all you should need" Kyle assured me. Thus began my career as Cam the Cattleman. Every morning I got up about 5:00 AM, walked out the back door, and smoked my morning cigarette while I counted “my" herd. Let me state at this point that I was really surprised at how much I liked these animals. Watching the calves cavorting with each other and seeing the interactions between the various members of the B Team wasThe Queenstown Chronicles Tales of a City Boy’s move to Paradise,., fascinating. Grant had told me that the saddest thing you could be was a rancher who didn’t like cows - and I suddenly understood that if you did like them the whole process was immensely satisfying. (Yes, I know I’m way too old for 4H.) A few days later Grant asked me how I was getting along with the ladies and their calves. “Just great' I replied. “My favourite is ihat number 59” i said, referring to an nice cow that always had a moment to stand and stare at me after having a drink at our “kiddy pool”. “That's good Cam" Grant chuckled back “but if you look more closely, you’ll see that they are ALL number 59”. Somewhat taken aback, I walked over to the fence, and sure enough, I had been reading her lease tag. It turns out I had a bunch of number 59’s! Everybody has a Label; About a week after my lesson in how to read ear tags, I walked out the back door for my smoke and morning count, and stopped cold. About 30 feet away was something new. It was huge, white, equipped differently at the back (facing away from me at the time) and on the wrong side of the fence, as in standing in my back yard. Yup, that seems to be a bull. I popped back inside, and rang up Grant on my cell phone. "Did you send me a Charolais bull7 I asked. “No," Grant replied “Do you have one?" “Oh yeah, a big one in the back yard" I said. “Whose is he?" Grant asked. 7 don’t know" I stated, ‘We haven’t really spoken yet'. “He has a brand. Cam - they all do" Grant said, the tone In his voice wondering yet again why God had sent him this idiot for a brother in law. Good, I thought, I’ll just hold up the cell phone and Grant can ask him to turn sideways. Instead I ran around the front of the house, and sure enough, there was a brand on him. (You know, whoever thought of that was a genius.) By this time you could actually feel the love in the air. All our cows were starting to line up at the fence - tails toward the wire. The girls were obviously taken with our visitor, and I could sense an impromptu party in the offing. Suddenly my new fence looked very insubstantial. I described the brand, Grant made a phone call, and nice Mr. Nelson from down the road showed up just a few minutes later to claim his wandering bull (poor bull was just trying to do his job and show a little initiative) and herd him back south and home. I have more stories and impressions of our journey here and first year in residence, i welcome your comments or condolences for my wife. Please email at theroon@xplornet.com Your Humble Servant, Cameron Klem Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.' My loving wife of 10 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?' And that’s when the fight started . A man and a woman were asleep like two innocent babies. Suddenly, at 3 o'clock in the morning, a loud noise came from outside. The woman, bewildered, jumped up from the bed and yelled at the man 'Holy Crap' That must be my husband!' So the man jumped out of the bed; scared and naked jumped out the window. He smashed himself on the ground, ran through a thorn bush and to his car as fast as he could go. A few minutes later he returned and went up to the bedroom and screamed at the woman, 'I AM your husband!' The woman yelled back, 'Yeah, then why were you running?'Our friends in Newfoundland have the 'Lowest Stress Rate' because they do not take medical terminology serious, you are going to die anyway, so live life and drink till you cannot lift your own mug! My wife and I were watching 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, "Do you want to make love?" "No." she answered. I then said, "Is that your final answer?" She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes." So I said, ".Then I'd like to phone a friend." And that's when the fight started. I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?" It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said. No, I wasn t the “Father of The Bride”, nor was I the groom, or the man doing the honors, but more exciting, I chauffeured Erin and Ryan on a wedding tour around Milo in my “T” that the girls decorated for this purpose, not forgetting the customary noisy tin cans tied on the back. Erin, (Joanne and Barry’s daughter), took the plunge August 1st. The outdoor ceremony was one that will be remembered by many; it was a fun filled long weekend event for guest campers, a memory that will last a lifetime for her and Ryan. Bridesmaids, Janet Sukut, Amy Atkinson and Cari Fydirchuk along with ushers, Chad Monner (Erin’s brother), and Merlin Gietz with Best man, Cam Young. I was impressed with the neatly organized back yard and Barry’s newly constructed low stonewall with a wooden archway to the entrance of wedding site. Arrangements of chairs were facing the “Hitching Post”, an eye catching decorated archway with lights and a unique white fence, on each side facing the aisle. It’s strange how a father gets so excited over the arrival of a newborn daughter and when she gets older, he is just as excited to give her away. Pastor Reg Berg performed the formalities and vows; his pleasant sense of humor was an addition to their wedding celebration. Oh yes, another plus, the sun was on its best behavior with a welcomed breeze once and awhile. After the picture taking, I drove the excited newly weds to the Community Hall for the well- organized reception. The MC and other speakers knew how to put their points across, whether it was expressing comments about Erin & Ryan or cracking a few jokes, which people enjoyed. The meal prepared by Colleen and Allan was their usual smorgasbord style and I would say they went out of their way for a special “Wedding Meal”, followed was a dance around 9.00. Unfortunately it started to rain and I thought it best to get my “T” home and under cover, besides it was past my bedtime. For the short length of time the rain lasted, with the hall doors opened, it cooled down allowing for pleasurable dancing. All in all it was a perfect day not only for Erin and Ryan but also I was pleased that the T was an attraction on their special day. Furthermore, I had a glorious and exciting time and I am truly thankful to Joanne and Barry for the invitation. “ THERE!” (S&Ut'f Then the moment the wedding party looks forward to; a cruise around town, stopping now and then posing for the photographer. They were looking forward to it; I was in my glory, dressed up in a 20’s costume, showing off my “T” and being surrounded by beautiful women. Many memorable pictures were taken with the group and some using the “ 177 to spice up the occasion. Some people may think this picture was the wedding party, relations, and friends attending. Not so; they are Joanne’s side of the family, the Schlaht’s. While ample other pictures were being taken, folks socialized and took advantage of the assortment of bar refreshments in the garage."Burt's Page" July/09 “Good-bye 65 and Hello 66” It was that time ©f years again when another one ©f thooose^ days has arrived* Unlike last year, Mother Nature wasn't aware of the importance off this special event Ct© me, that is)* Even though it rained and below comfortable 93.B.Q. weather, that didn't stop my aging process, but I do believe it discouraged some people from attending* With Bob Brown's help, removed my vehicles from the garage, relocated a few other items to my shed, tided up the area, swept the floor and ready for party time* Thanks to the Mil© Lion's Club for lending me two picnic tables, (hope they didn't mind)* Just before party time that afternoon, Steve Bertscby came over and we managed to pick the tables up with the use off his truck and positioned them in the middle of the garage floor. She was not happy with what she saw and said to her husband, 'I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.' The husband replies, 'Your eyesight's damn near perfect.' And that’s when the fight started. I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?"" Nah, she can order for herself." And that’s when the fight started. My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' said my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And t hat’s when the fight started. After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt.' So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.' And that’s when the fight started. My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, 'What's on TV?' I said, 'Dust.'
