PIONEER PRAIRIE MOTHER She made a home from walls of sod; She swept a *puncheon floors She planted morning-glory vines In a riot near the door. She kept her rifle on the wall In easy reach, and prayed That she might never take it down Through fear of Indian raid. All night she heard the lonely wind, The coyote’s mournful tune. As ghostly, crouching haunches Squatted there against the moon. She saw the silent shadow Of a lone wolf in the rocks, Down by the spring where she must go To wash and sun her crocks. She watched the clouds for signs of rain; She prayed for drought to cease She covered chicks from blowing sand And rendered possum grease. She put her children’s tears to rout With hero tales she knew; She taught them from the Holy Book, S As mind and bodies grew. And this the living harvest yield Implanted through her toil; The rich, red-bloaded men of faith Who sprang from prairie soil. She only made a prairie home; She swept a ^puncheon floor; She mothered God’s nobl1ity — How could she give us more. * al_h^ - Vera Holding. A grass fire which got out of control around 1 P.M, Wednesday behind the Nyal Fletcher residence and was burning along Horace Ririe’s corrals and barn down to the Rulon Harker fence line was quietly extingquished by the Ifegrath Municipal Fire Pumper, and firemen. IRRIGATION Sunday a request was made for volunteers to do irrigating on the Welfare Farm. (Three minutes of silence) then Elder David Keeler raised a hand slowly, "What about ditches?" a voice from the rear. No ditches so the irrigating was postponed. Ditches are a must. Water is expensive. The other day we gave our"cheque for $184.00 for cleaning ditches. We will need to spend that much more to finish the job. Canadian Sugar Factories suggest flood irrigating every third row or sprinkling. Beets should be above the ground by June 1st, Poor germination to date, Alberta Canning Company has two sprinklers going night and day. At the McIntyre farm they have An expensive sprinkling system, over $6,000.00 but no water. Reservoirs are empty, no run off. .
