While most of the club members are interested in hunting and fishing, our concerns cover a wide range of resource management and conservation issues. We recognize that fish and wildlife are products of a healthy environment and sound resource management practices. Below are some of the activities that the club members have been involved in over the past couple of years. In a number of instances, non-club members have participated in and assisted with projects, -arrange & sponsor the compulsory Firearms Training Course at modest cost to participants -offer die Alberta Hunter Education course required of all first time hunters -sponsor the kids’ fishing derby at the local children's pond, in 1996 about 130 kids took part -purchase trout for stocking in the children’s pond . -made cash donations to the Magrath Public Library/Museum & Foothills fire relief fund, -donated magazine subscriptions to the Magrath Library-Nature Canada & AB. Game Warden, -carried out a local pheasant feeding program during the severe portions of winter -maintain the Fel Balderson Wildlife Reserve -maintain the shooting range -set up goose nesting platforms in the Reserve and old canal to establish a Canada goose population -participated in the development of the Ross Grassland Natural area Management Plan -put on the annual trophy competition and banquet -instigated a wildlife habitat inventory of the Pothole Creek valley paid for by the "Bucks for Wildlife” program -obtained trees and shrubs for shelter belt planting The Club's major fundraising activities include: -the annual turkey shoot and archery competitions -Bingos and sale of memberships The Magrath Rod and Gun Club is affiliated with the Alberta Fish and Game Association, and through that organization we have a voice in Provincial resource management and environmental policies. -A $20.00 membership includes: -$100,000 liability insurance while hunting or fishing -A subscription to the bi-monthly publication The Outdoor Edge -Access to the Club’s shooting range -Eligibility for the annual trophy competition There are any number of the other worthwhile conservation projects that could be carried in the community by individuals or groups. All we need are people who are willing to commit a bit of time. Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Club House. Young sportsmen are particularly welcome. REMEMBERTO.
