CjcnrcUru^ Or&^uU^ A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.” Very quietly, the doctor said, 7 don't know." “You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?” The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side of which came the sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leapt on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I now little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing. I know my Master is there and that is enough." There is nothing to be gained by fearing death. Death is the natural end of our time on earth, the gateway to eternal life. Pope John XX111 said; “Death is the future for everyone. It is the Last Post of this life and the Reveille of the next. Death is the end of our present life, it is the parting from loved ones; it is the setting out into the unknown. We overcome death by accepting it as the will of a loving God, by finding Him in it. Death, like birth, is only a transformation, another birth. When we die, we shall change our state, that is all. And in faith in God, it is as easy and natural as falling asleep here and waking up there.” Perhaps July is not the best time to be writing a column about death, but then when is a good time? Enjoy the sounds, colours, smells and the joys of summer. Do not worry about death; it will come when it will come. Enjoy the life that God has given to you, each day, each minute. July Services: Sunday 10,h - 9:00 AM Sunday 24th - 9:00 AM See LjOtt ck.Letter to the Editor - As I was perusing the Wednesday June 22, 2016 edition of the Vulcan Advocate, I was struck by an item in the article "Downpayment put towards purchase of new fire truck for Northwest Fire Department" by Advocate Editor, Mr. Stephen Tipper. In that article, it was stated by Stuart Larson (the County's Director of Protective Services) that "The Northwest Fire Association, which raises funds for the department, had secured a $75,000 grant for a new front-line fire engine" and that "The grant funds can be used for a downpayment towards the new fire truck, with the balance to be paid in January". Mr. Larson went on to congratulate the Association for having done their homework for the last year regarding the purchase, and indicated that the County has had months of discussion with Northwest fire officials regarding the tenders submitted. Councillor Glen Gateman then wondered how the truck (which costs substantially more that the $75,000 - probably up to $350,000 more) is getting paid for. Mr. Larson replied "That's actually part of our discussion incamera later" Well, WHY should that discussion be in camera? Governments of all levels now adhere to the standard that only matters of personnel are automatically held in camera , and the allocation of substantial amounts of taxpayers' money is almost never done in private. Vulcan County policy is, and has been for many years, to purchase the fire truck and equipment on behalf of the Fire Association - but, the cost of the truck etc. is actually paid by the Association who has requested it. You see the payment on your tax notice as the "Fire Requisition" - this is where each Fire Association in the County gets the money to pay for the capital equipment they need. NO money from general revenue is used for this purpose. Mr. Larson's statement is somewhat misleading in giving the (unchallenged) impression that the County is paying the balance of funds owing on the truck, and hiding the actual payment details within an in-camera session. Again I note that in-camera sessions are being used far too often by this current Council, and this is a clear disservice to Vulcan taxpayers. I may be confused in this matter, and to clear things up, I invite Mr. Larson to kindly publish in an upcoming edition of the Advocate the actual details of the purchase, and a detailed explanation for each time the Council has had to retreat in camera for a discussion on any topic other that personnel discipline or compensation. It should make for interesting reading, don't you think? Former Councillor Grant Lahd. Today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walked over and asked “What brings you in today Sir?” I looked at the lady and said “I’m interested in buying a refrigerator.” I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those smart phones that everyone is carrying. I can’t afford one so I carry around my garage door opener instead. I was thinking about old age, and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too damn tired to bounce it. I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age, and calling it “Pumping Rust.” When people visiting see a cat’s litter box, they always say “Oh, have you got a cat?” Just once I want to reply, “No, it’s for company, like you.” Employment application forms always ask who’s to be called in case of an emergency. I think you should write “an ambulance.” Birds of a feather flock together, and then crap on your car. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight. This is because by then your body and your fat cells have gotten to be really close friends. The easiest way to find something you have lost around the house, is to buy its replacement. Did you ever notice, that Roman Numerals for the number 40 are XL? Some people try to turn back their life’s odometers. Not me. I want people to know why I looked this way - I’ve travelled a long way, and some of the roads were paved. You know you are getting old, when everything either dries up, or leaks. Eventually you will stop lying about your age, and start bragging about it.MILO LIONS CLUB NEWS Activities: •6 members attended Carseland Interciub June 7. •7 members (Mike Collins, Neal Deitz, Greg Deitz, Ian Godkin, Mike Hingley, Barry Monner and Alvin Winch) one guest (Larry Vannatta) attended STARS golf classic in Calgary on June 9. Surprised by the unusual nature of these requests, one of his generals asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: 1) “I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal." 2) “I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everyone sees that material wealth acquired on earth will stay on earth.” 3) “I want my hands to swing in the winds so that people understand that we come to this world empty-handed, and we leave this world empty-handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME.” We do not take to our grave any material wealth. Time is our most precious treasure because it is limited. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of out live that we will never receive back. Our time is our life! The greatest present that you can give to your family and friends is your time. No smiling allowed: You can tell a lot about a woman’s mood just by her hands. For instance, if they are holding a gun, she’s probably angry. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you are attracted to someone? That’s your common sense leaving your body. Darn it. I didn’t make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. I don't like to make plans for they day, because then the word “premeditated" can get thrown around in the courtroom.MILO Lions CLUB 2n" AOnUAL SHOW S Assies - HOT HODS - CUSTOMS - MU- - EROTICS - TRACTORsUiECIALIOTEREST ■ ALL ERAS WELCOME EGISTRATIOO STARTS @ HAM OOHOTRY %EE, Istj 100 VEHICLES DASH PADS S SPOm^SlFTS HOW S SHIRE STARTS d> OIL UIELCOIOE ■ 00 HDmiSSlOO FEE - MUSH BY OJ KATIE WALKER BUIS OF LIFE DE(s? 2:30PM PRESEOTED By THE MILO FIRE DEPORTIOEOT 'EOPLE CHOICE AWARDS © 3:00PM SPECTATORS TO VOTE 00 VEHICLE CATAEORIES, PRI2ES FOR CATEGORY WIOOERS IlGIOE MELT STARTS @ 3:30PM GUESS HOW LOOG THE EOGIOE LASTS ■ SO/! Then I use proven body manipulation techniques to relieve stress from those areas, beginning with a touch as light as the weight of a nickel. Sessions are generally deeply relaxing, and create feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in areas being worked by the therapist. Chronic pain, particularly in the neck and back, and the related discomfort and life stress issues chronic pain causes, can be safely relieved. Think of this as a massage designed for your nervous system instead of muscle tissue. Please ask questions about CST! I welcome the opportunity to share the benefits of this therapy system with you. Kids can track their reading throughout the summer, participate in programs at their local library and visit www.tdsummerreadinaclub.ca to create an online notebook and read great e-books. While online, kids can also submit book reviews, share jokes, write stories and find great recommended reads. TD Summer Reading Club 2016 New for 2016, kids can read and comment on two different stories created exclusively for the TD Summer Reading Club, one written in English by author Jess Keating and one written in French by author Anne Bernard-Lenoir. Both authors will read from their stories as part of Get Your Summer Read On programming. "Kids can participate anytime, anywhere - at local public libraries across Canada as well as at home, online, on the road or wherever their summer takes them," said Adrienne Deitz from Milo Library. "The TD Summer Reading Club celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories. It's designed to inspire kids to explore the fun of reading their way - the key to building a lifelong love of reading." Studies show that kids who keep reading throughout the summer do better when they return to school in the fall. The TD Summer Reading Club is an ideal way to keep kids engaged. The free program is co-created and delivered by over 2,000 public libraries across Canada. Developed by Toronto Public Library, in partnership with Library and Archives Canada and generously sponsored by TD Bank Group, the Club celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories and is designed to £■» inspire kids to explore the fun of reading their ■pieway - the key to building a lifelong love of reading. The TD Summer Reading Club is a fun (and free!) program for kids held by participating Canadian public libraries. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to visit your local library to sign up! You’ll get a free club notebook, a chance to collect stickers, and find lots of fun all summer long! RULE THREE: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. I want to be fair and open-minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: you may come to the door with your underwear showing, and your pants 10 sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist. RULE FOUR: I’m sure you’ve been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a “barrier method” of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex with my daughter, I am the barrier! RULE FIVE: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her, until she has finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry. Harder. RULE SIX: as you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie you should not be dating my daughter. She is putting on her makeup - a process that can take longer than painting the Lions Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don’t you do something useful, like washing my car, or mowing my lawn? RULE SEVEN: the following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: • Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool; • Places where there is darkness. • Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or any form of happiness; • Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a parka - zipped up to her throat. • Movies which feature chainsaws are okay. • Hockey games are okay. • Old folks’ homes are best. RULE EIGHT: do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has been, but on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless God of your universe. If I ask you where you are going, and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. RULE NINE: be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming over a compound in Kandahar. As soon as you pull into the driveway, you should: • Park in the designated “Safe Zone”; • Leave your car running; • Exit the car with both hands in plain sight. • Speak loudly the perimeter password for the evening as given to you earlier by me, then. • Announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early; • Now return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face (with eyes like saucers) at the window is mine.MILO SCHOOL AWARDS DAY_______________Tune 24. 2016 Thank you to our awards day sponsors: Milo and District Agricultural Society, Milo Lions Club, Ken Stumpf Family, Milo Recreation Board, Virginia Mitchell Family, Bob Umscheid Family, Joe Holoboff Family, Milo Parent Council Arrowwood Co-operative Association, Milo School Student Union, Alberta Teacher’s Association Thank you to our school wind-up day (June 28) sponsors: Prairie Perfection Catering Service for donating the hamburgers. As mentioned last month, Rafael Zea has resigned his seat on the Village Council to undertake employment elsewhere. There is one vacancy on the council that needs to be filled. For those interested in serving on the Village Council, nomination packages are available in the Village Office. Barb Godkin has kindly agreed to serve as the Returning Officer, once again, for this process. The Village Council appointed her at its June 7th meeting. In Arrowwood, the combined assessment and tax notices are in the mail. The general municipal tax rate has increased by half of a mill while the village has looked at ways to save money. In Milo, the assessment notices are in the mail. The Village Council will finalize its municipal budget and tax rate bylaw in July, issuing tax notices at that time. Please be advised that the 2015 assessment roll is available in each Village Office for your review. Village Administration will put information online to assist those who would like to learn more about municipal operations. Significant capital projects are in the works in both communities. This includes an assessment of the sanitary and wastewater system in Arrowwood, and upgrades to the water treatment plant. In Milo, a major sanitary rehabilitation and roadwork project is being concluded. A water aeration system upgrade to the raw water reservoirs, as well as further roadwork, is also being considered. With the potential for a postal strike in July, the villages are looking at ways to facilitate the billing of ratepayers for taxes and utilities. Billings will go forward regardless of a postal strike and, ultimately, we will require some cooperation and understanding from ratepayers. We will be most grateful for your assistance, and we will do our best to work constructively with everyone to facilitate the timely payment of bills. Sincerely, Christopher Northcott Chief Administrative OfficerVILLAGE OF MILO ALBERTA VILLAGE OF MILO COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES - CONDENSED Tuesday, June 6, 2016 The regular meeting of the council of the Village of Milo was held in the Milo Library on Tuesday, June 6th, 2016, commencing at 7:00 pm. A: No, 35 children is enough. Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move? A: With any luck, right after he finishes university. Q: What is the most reliable method to determine the sex of an unborn baby A:Childbirth. Q: My wife is 5 months pregnant, and so moody that sometimes she becomes irrational. A: So? What is your question? Q: My childbirth instructor says that it’s not pain that I will feel during childbirth, but pressure. Is she right? A: Yes, the same way that a tornado might be called an air current. Q: When is the best time to have an epidural? A: Right after you find out that you’re pregnant. Q: Is there any reason that I should be in the delivery room with my wife while she’s in labor? A: None at all, unless the word “alimony” means anything to you. Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth? A: Yes, pregnancy. Q: Should I have a baby shower? A: Not if you change the baby's diaper when necessary. Q: Our baby was bom last week. When will my life begin to feel normal again? A: When all your kids are in university. Missing Wife Husband: My wife is missing. She went shopping yesterday, and never returned home. Sergeant: How tall is your wife? Husband: Gee, I’m not really sure. Maybe a bit over five feet tall? Sergeant: And her weight? Husband: I don’t know - not slim; not really fat. Sergeant: What color is your wife’s hair? Husband: It seems to change a couple of times a year. Maybe dark brown now -1 honestly can’t remember. Sergeant: What was she wearing when she left the house? Husband: Well, it could have been slacks, or maybe a dress. Or workout clothes. I think she used to do yoga. Sergeant: Can you describe her vehicle? Sergeant: What kind of truck was it.” Husband: A 2015 Ford F150 King Ranch 4x4 with the eco-boost 5.0L engine, in Arctic White. It has a Bed-King custom matching white bed cover, and a black poly bed liner - unmarked. The seats are Slate Gray leather, 6-way power, and the floor mats are Bubba-Mats, in a matching gray. It has the Bose sound system with DVD and satellite navigation, Bluetooth for my phone, CB radio, USB ports and four power outlets. Oh, and a Class III hitch, 22 inch 16 spoke black alloy wheels, titanium running boards, and indirect wheel well lighting. At this point the husband choked up and began softly crying. Sergeant: Don’t worry buddy. We will find your truck. Adult Truths I think part of a best friend’s job if you die should be to rush over to your house, and delete the pom from your computer. I deeply regret all those times when I was young, and declined to take a nap. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you exactly where and how a person died. Most of the bad decisions in my life make good stories. I love the sense of camaraderie and brotherhood I get when a whole line of cars suddenly teams up to prevent a rude jerk from cutting in at the front. Shirts get dirty. Underwear and socks get dirty. But pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them without washing forever. The first guard for testicles (the sports ‘cup’) was used in hockey in 1874, but the first hockey helmet appeared in 1974. That means it took hockey as a sport (and men as individuals!) 100 years to realize that your brain is also important. I keep some people’s numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call. Why is there no tag on a fitted sheet with illustrated instructions for how to fold it? Every day a magic moment strikes - when you know that no matter what, you just aren't’ going to accomplish anything else productive for the rest of the day.
