MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly Since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 50e January 8,2003 MMMMMMJIRIB * Seniors News Points of Interest TRADING COMPANY STORE NEWS HISTORY As this is the last issue of the “News” we thought that it would be appropriate to write a brief history of the paper for the benefit of our readers. The Magrath Trading Company Store News was started in 1932 at the inspiration of my grandfather J. Alfred Ririe who managed the Trading Company for over 62 years. He felt that the town needed a paper which would provide both community news and an opportunity for Magrath and district residents to publish announcements. Many civic and public happenings were brought to the attention of readers through its pages. Mr. Ririe also wrote an editorial with each issue. These editorials, though sometimes controversial, were always interesting and reflected his views about the community and society at large. There have been many who have helped prepare the News over the years. Some who did the news for long periods of time were Sadie Woodger, Irene Holladay, Marge Balderson, Esther Toomer, Norma Owens, Denise Labbe, and Carol Tidmarsh. • Grocery Specials Home Hardware Inside this Issued Community 1-3, 5, 7 Sports 4 Classified Ads Calendar Library News Grocery Specials 6 8 8 9-11 Hardware Specials 12 < J Originally the paper was distributed as a free service to all households in Magrath and district. With the retail climate changing in recent years, the cost of providing this service has presented a significant financial drain on the Trading Company. Although efforts have been made to move the paper to more of a break even enterprise, unfortunately this has not been possible. The decision has therefore been made to discontinue the News, and along with other changes, to hopefully help the Trading Company stay in business. We realize that this action is disappointing to many who are regular readers of the News but we are hopeful that some day if and when things turn around for the Trading Company we might be able to once again offer the News to the community. We thank the residents of Magrath and district for your support over the years and wish all a prosperous year. Trading Company advertising will continue through Home Hardware and AG Foods flyers. Refunds for unused portions of subscriptions may be picked up at the Trading Co. Office. Wes Balderson, Manager, Magrath Trading Company 2 The Ross and Jolayne Robinson home was full over the holidays with several of the family spending the Christmas week Visiting were son Brad, wife Tracy and daughter Emily (17 months). Brad is employed as a hospital pharmacist in Miami, FL. Tracy is employed as an office assistant in a construction firm. Michelle and David Caldwell arrived with sons Josh (21), Brandon (20) and Dalian (19) of Great Falls, MT. David is a physical therapist and Michelle is a professional picture framer and crafter. Scott and Pam with children BJ (18), Kayla (12), and Beau (21) including fiancee Vanessa Turner motored from Ellensburg, WA. Scott has recendy joined Central Washington University Theatre Arts as Associate Professor. Pam is the office secretary for a company that manufactures quilt-cutting equipment, Alto’s. Joining the family from Magrath, Barry, Sheila and family rounded out the visitors. Barry continues as an IT instructor at LCC. They missed visiting with Shaunna and Vince who were not able to arrange a visit this season. We will miss you all! k With much Lovell Heather, Gregg, Chelsea, & Broghan^ Zeniths Champions Christmas Classic The 4th Annual Christmas Classic Invitational High School Basketball Tournament was held on December 26, 27 and 28, 2002. The 16- team get-together featured an eight-school tourney on both the boys and the girls sides of the draw. The Zeniths (No. 1, 4A) hosted Stirling Lakers (No. 1 ranked 1A), Cranbrook, Edmonton Jasper Place No. 8, 4A), Edmonton Archbishop O’Leary (No. 7, 4A), Regina Sheldon Williams, Bert Church and Lloydminster (No. 6, 4A). The Pandas (No. 3, 3A) draw included Catholic Central Cougars, Lloydminster (honourabe mention 4A), LCI (honourable mention 4A), Springbank (No. 1, 3A), Cranbrook, Airdie Bert Church (No. 7, 4A) and Taber W.R. Myers (No. 6, 3A). In opening play on day one both the Pandas and the Zeniths were triumphant. The Pandas sprinted to a 24-3 lead after nine minutes versus Catholic Central Cougars. They were up 37-22 at the intermission and ultimately prevailed 68-46. Grade 12 point guard Bonnie Wilde was a strong floor general and scored 15 points. “Bonnie played her best game of the year,” said head coach Tom Alston. Speedy wing Lauren Balderson netted 12 points, while Debbie Balderson added 10. Kim Miller and Jillene Hudson had nine points each. Zeniths, ranked number one among Alberta 4A high school clubs, downed 1A number one ranked Stirling Lakers 93-67. Six-foot-four point guard Allen Tollestrup led Magrath with 28 points. Six-foot-nine Grade 12 post Joe Schow added 20, while Riley Sabey scored 15. The Pandas didn’t fare as well on day 2 as they were defeated in a tough and hard fought batde against the Bert Church Chargers 72-69 in semifinal play. Lauren Balderson scored 20 points. Barons 77-62 in semi-final play on day 2. Allen Tollestrup netted 36 points while T.J. Quinton, grade 11, scored 21 points. Saturday, December 28, brought day 3 and the championship games. The Zeniths sent the fans into the snowy outdoors with smiles on their faces as Riley Sabey turned in a mind-numbing 33-point performance in their 81-64 victory over Sheldon Williams Spartans of Regina in the championship game. With the Spartans’ defence concentrating on Zeniths scoring star Allen Tollestrup, and shutting down the inside presence of Joe Schow, Sabey scorched the Saskatchewan visitors with eight three-pointers and a shooting percentage to make a military man smile. Add in a series of roll-ins from passes threaded inside by Tollestup and Sabey stretched his 15 minutes of fame over a pair of 20-minute halves. The game performance earned Sabey a second-team all-star nod. Tournament MVP Allen Tollestup finished with 23 points and defensive MVP Joe Schow had 14. The Pandas earned a third-place victory of 5948 over LCI Clipper Queens. Bonnie Wilde scored 22 points and was named to the first allstar team. Probably one of the most exciting moments of the night was when grade 12 student, Easton Chipman, came out of the packed stands to hit a $1,000 heave from beyond mid-court as a memorable Magrath Christmas Classic was put to rest Saturday night. 5 THE GARDEN CITY” PUBLIC NOTICE 1.
