Perhaps we should just take life one day at a time. "Thisis the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be clad in it." PS 118 Here we are at the start of yet another new year. Will it be better than 2015? What surprises await us in the months to come? The year lies before like a clean slate waiting for us to put the first mark on it. In this year of our Lord 2016, we even have an extra day to be thankful for. And we truly should rejoice for each and every day that we are given. As we have only a finite number of days on earth, it is a shame to waste even one of them. I know that some days it seems that there is little to rejoice in, but that is just part of life. No one ever said that life is to be easy, but each day is a gift from your Creator. We should respect that gift, offer our service back to God, and make the most of each moment He gives us. Instead of making New Year’s resolutions that are soon broken, and easily forgotten, maybe for this year we could commit to kindness toward our neighbours. Each of us knows of a way, perhaps an easy way, that we could enrich the life of another nearby. Is there a neighbour that would welcome some home baking shared in love? Is there a housebound person who would appreciate their sidewalk being shovelled? Is there a senior in one of the residences that would welcome a caring visit from an old friend? It may come as a surprise that in this century young children still like to have books read to them. Try it out with your grandchildren. We are all saved by God's grace, but the expectation is that grace is also the fuel for good works. For many Christmas was not a joyful time; it can bring up painful reminders from the past, wounds that have never healed. This is where a helping hand, a kind word, a cup of coffee and time just listening, can be such a compassionate gesture. Resolve that this year you will not journey in solitude, or in the comfort of what has become familiar. Make this year a time in which you truly do love your neighbour as yourself. Health and happiness in 2016. See you in church! This funding provided to the Archives Society of Alberta allowed us to hire Roberta Kerr for a second year to archive Milo and Area Organizations. Please check out the descriptions of what has been uploaded to following website: http://www. albertaonrecord.ca/ milo-librarv-archives We will be applying for more funding this year to continue our project. Thanks to the Lions Club for continuing to support it. A Year in Review 2015 Milo Library had a busy year in the community. Most all of the Village meetings were held here including one with government officials from Municipal Affairs. Preschool programs included not only 33 Rhyme Times Programs, but the addition of 6 Alphabet Soup Programs, all sponsored by Rainbow Literacy Society. The 8 Summer Reading programs with Adrienne Deitz for kids 4-10 years old were held in July and August. A First Aid Course for the Fire Association, and several video conferences including with the Early Childhood Coalition and several Chinook Arch Librarians meetings were also held here. The Library once again held an Open House and Art Show during the Fall Fair and also had one for the 75 year olds’ at the Lions BBQ. An historic display was set up with donations from Doreen McCool for the seniors to reminisce. The Annual Ham Supper fund raiser was another huge success thanks to the community’s support. We also added a Christmas Tea in the Library this year with lots of goodies and visiting. This probably will become another annual event for us. We want to thank the Milo & District Ag Society for their sponsorship of employing a summer student again and allowing for extra operating hours in the summer. The Milo Lions Club has been very generous to us once more. In January they presented us with the profits from the Fun Casino and the sponsorship of Milo Lions Archi- vist Fellowship allowed us to employ Celia Lahd for the ____ U summer ThcfNk I archive you! project. AND THAT’S HOW THE FIGHT STARTED. One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started. My wife and I were sitting at a table at her school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started. My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, "What's on TV?" I said, "Dust." And then the fight started. Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible." My loving wife of 5 years replied, "And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?" And that's how the fight started. My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 180 in about 3 seconds. I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started. I rear-ended a car this morning.the start of a REALLY bad day! The driver got out of the other car, and he was a dwarf. He looked up at me and said “I am NOT Happy!” So I said, “Well, which one ARE you then?” That's how the fight started.Milo Community School presents "The Christmas Castaways" The Milo School annual Christmas Production took place Tuesday, December 15th to a standing room only crowd. The title of the play was "The Christmas Castaways" and the appreciative audience was treated to scenes and songs of Christmas celebrations around the world. The program started with a display of Native Dancing featuring 5 Milo Students from the Siksika Nation. The grade 6-9 band proudly showed off their new instruments and gave a demonstration of the different sounds. Our grade 3-5 music class played 2 Christmas songs on the boom-whackers as well. After visiting the Ukraine, Mexico, Whoville and Hawaii, the real reason for the season was presented in the Nativity featuring the kindergarten and pre-school students along with students from grades 4-6. Village business certainly had its highs and lows as well. It is, however, important to remember the successes, give thanks, pushing onward toward a hopeful future. One high point of 2015 was a retirement party that the Village of Arrowwood had for Ted Oakes. Since 1980, Ted served the village in one official capacity or another, be it councillor, mayor, administrator, water plant operator and village foreman. He has worn many hats, oftentimes interchangeably, and his dedicated service contributed to the stability and success of municipal operations in Arrowwood for over 35 years. From Left to Right, Monty Beagle (former Councillor), Bill Graff (Councillor), Ted Oakes, Clydine Grenier (Councillor), and Matt Crane (Councillor and Mayor). With the advent of the New Year, we can give thanks for the local members of our communities who give of themselves year after year. Such individuals continue to make the communities of Arrowwood and Milo vibrant places where we can enjoy the benefits of civil society; organizing shared interests and initiatives; providing stability and support across whatever challenges might come our way. Wishing all of you a Happy New Year! Best wishes for 2016. Regular Meeting of Village of Arrowwood Council Tuesday, November 10, 2015 Page 2 CranioSacral Therapy is now available CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light touch” approach that involves gently first assessing the tension in soft tissues surrounding the major components of your central nervous system - primarily the head, spine and pelvic areas. Then I use proven body manipulation techniques to relieve stress from those areas, beginning with a touch as light as the weight of a nickel. Sessions are generally deeply relaxing, and create feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in areas being worked by the therapist. Chronic pain, particularly in the neck and back, and the related discomfort and life stress issues chronic pain causes, can be safely relieved. Think of this as a massage designed for your nervous system instead of muscle tissue. Please ask questions about CST! I welcome the opportunity to share the benefits of this therapy system with you. As a reminder, don’t forget that I’m now direct billing Alberta Blue Cross, AESBP, SunLife, Manulife, Great West Life, etc. Massages are available Fridays & Saturdays at Trends by T.C. A part undertaking of the Milo Recreation Society, the first president was V.J. Bertrand, and the first secretary, C. L. Johnson. Membership in the Association was set at $1 per family per year. For many years the Association accepted donations of wheat for sale, with the proceeds going to support its activities. The Milo United Farmers of Alberta contributed $1700 as a starting fund, and local volunteer labour created a park on several acres of prairie grass, extending from the west side of Lake McGregor to the irrigation canal. An early design drawn up by the Department of Municipal Affairs in Edmonton features extensive landscaping around an athletic field, 14 mile race track, 9 hole golf course, playground and swimming beach, and includes a clubhouse, pavilion, grandstand and dance hall. 400 small trees were ordered from the Department of Agriculture in April 1954. Landscaping of the park continued over the years, with 5000 caragana shrubs planted in the early 1960’s, along with 300 poplar trees and 100 elms. A race meet was proposed in the spring of 1955, and the Sports Day that was held that June laid the groundwork for what was to become a mainstay of Lake McGregor Memorial Park Association funding for almost 20 years. Race Meet activities prompted the construction of many of the Parks buildings and facilities, and in 1961, it was decided that the Annual Race Meet would be best-handled by a committee separate from the Park Board. A camp kitchen was built in 1957, and a dock in 1959. The provincial Department of Highways built a second kitchen in 1960, and 1961 saw the addition of a main gate and a golf course, which was leased to and operated by a separate organization, the Lake McGregor Golf Club. Funding from the County of Vulcan facilitated the upgrading of playgrounds and toilets, and the Park was available for use for gymkhana’s and other events. The Lake McGregor Memorial Park Association was often in touch with the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration, particularly regarding issues of lake front access, and as early as 1962, there were discussions about turning the area over to the provincial government for re-designation as a Provincial Park. This issue was revisited many times over the years, particularly as the popularity of the area grew and supervision became of greater concern, but it wasn’t until 1985 that Lake McGregor Park was turned over to the provincial government, and the Lake McGregor Memorial Park Association was officially disbanded.Love & Marriage A cautionary tale Alan and Lorraine lived on a cove at Gull Lake Alberta. It was early winter and the lower portion of the cove had frozen over. Alan asked Lorraine if she would walk across the frozen part of the cove to the general store and get him some smokes and beer. She asked him for some money, but he told her, "Nah, just put it on our tab. Old man Stacey won’t mind.” So Lorraine , being the good wife walked across the ice, got the smokes and beer at the store and then walked back home across the cove. When she got home with the items she said, "Alan, you always tell me not to run up the tab at Stacey's store. Why didn't you just give me some money?" Alan replied, "Well, Lorraine, I didn't want to send you out there with cash when I wasn't sure how thick the ice was!" A love story like this almost brings tears to my eyes. (Editor’s note - reminds me of the story told by a United Church missionary who taught in (then South) Viet Nam: Father Jacob noticed that when farmers went to town, they always walked ahead, followed at a respectful 6 paces by their wife, who would lead the family water buffalo, ready to package up any purchased items and have the buffalo bear them home. The Father asked his friend in the village why this was the custom. “History - we have always done it that way, and always will,” he replied. After teaching western values of love and respect (along with religion, of course) for a year, the missionary returned to Canada for a much needed break. When he returned, low and behold, he noticed a new custom in his old village. Now the woman walked first, leading the water buffalo, with the man following 6 paces behind. The missionary sought out his friend, and commented “I see you have decided that some things can change; was this from my teaching?’ “Land mines" said the farmer. My New Year's resolution is to be more positive and less sarcastic. Like I won't screw that J up right away. 2. 3. Scarlett Johansson Find the lost city of Atlantis.
