Always protect your hands with unlined nitrile or neoprene gloves when handling, mixing or pouring concentrated pesticides. Never wear cloth or leather gloves as they soak up the chemical and are a constant source of contamination. Exposure studies show that when an operator is using a tractor-pulled sprayer the hands receive the greatest exposure to pesticides. It is therefore recommended that gloves also be worn when you are actually spraying pesticide. Never remove your gloves to make adjustments to your spraying equipment. Using nitrile gloves allows you the necessary dexterity to adjust nozzles without removing your gloves. To prevent pesticide from running down inside your gloves, wear your coverall sleeve over top of the gloves. If possible wash the outside of the gloves before they are removed, otherwise take them off carefully to avoid contaminating the inside of the glove. Wash protective gloves after handling concentrated chemicals and after daily use. Pesticides can penetrate into the material. Replace gloves immediately if holes or rips occur. Take care when handling pesticides to ensure that gloves and pesticide safely go hand in hand. Durward L. Besides his wife Linnea, Durward is survived by three sons Mick (Dorothy) and Charlie (Judy) Barnett both of Del Bonita and John (Cecilia) Barnett of Little Rock, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Phyllis Patching of Lethbridge; one brother Jeff (Beth) Barnett of Esther, and nieces and nephews. PRESS RELEASE Recently three skunks near the towns of Magrath and Raymond have been found to have rabies. Rabies has been noted in skunks in Southern Alberta from time to time but the proximity to the town prompts this notice. Residents should be warned to control their animals and have all strays removed. All pets should be vaccinated annually and children should be taught not to approach strange animals, especially wild animals which appear tame. If rabies is suspected in an animal, it is required by law that you report this to your local Agriculture Canada Veterinary Inspection office, which in this area is in Lethbridge (telephone 382-3120). Suspicious wildlife should be reported to the Wildlife Control officer at 381-5125 or your local RCMP Detachment. Incidents in which animals may have been bitten by wild animals, particularly skunks, should also be reported to Agriculture Canada. Biting incidents involving people should be reported to the same office and the person bitten should consult their physician. J.L. Delver, DVM; Regional Supervisor.
