MAGRATH NEWS Published Weekly since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 30 cents í ZONE CROWN Magrath Zeniths captured the Southern Alberta 4A Zone Championship for the FIRST TIME on Friday night as they defeated LCI Rams 94-82 in the Title Game. The Zeniths now travel to Edmonton to battle for the Provincial Championship this weekend. In their first game of the Tournament, the Zeniths defeated Catholic Central easily 89-52. Top Scorers for Magrath were: Cassio Maffia 17: Cristiano Ruv 16: Bart Harris 14: and Danny Balderson 13. On Thursday night, before a large crowd at the Sportsplex, the Zeniths played a solid game and defeated arch rival Raymond 86-63. Danny Balderson hit his first 9 shots in a row and led the Zeniths with 25 points. Cristiano Ruv added 21 and Cassio Maffia 14. The Championship Game against LCI was a see-saw affair with the Zeniths jumping into an early 19 point lead , only to see it evaporate to 8 points by half time. LCI continued to come back and led by 6 points, when there were only 10 minutes remaining in the game. However, the Zeniths pulled away at the end with clutch 3 pointers by Cassio Maffia, Danny Balderson and Bart Harris. Cristiano Ruy was outstanding in the game, particularly in the first half when he pumped in 22 points and then finished with the team high of 31 points. Bait Harris and Cassio Maffia showing excellent outside shooting, scored 24 and 21 points respectively. Danny Balderson scored 10 points despite sitting out much of the second half due to four fouls. Aaron Kinder added 9 points and contributed some key rebounds. Zeniths overall record going into Provincials is 29 wins and 4 losses. LCI were upset by Raymond in the second place game and will join the Zeniths at the Provincials. ST-PATRICK'S DAY - MARCH 17 TH the wearing of the GREEN; a reminder of the green countryside of Ireland; the SHAMROCK - Ireland's national symbol. A day honouring St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, whom it is said, gained tolerance for Christianity in Ireland. He used the shamrock to teach the doctrine of the Trinity. Other legends attribute him to freeing Ireland of snakes. In the Western world it is a secular holiday. Many hold parties and parades. You don't need to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick's Day .Just put on a bit of green and have fun! Craig was born in Lethbridge and raised in Del Bonita. He attended high school in Cardston; and then the Lethbridge Community College for two years, graduating with a diploma in Conservation Enforcement. Craig worked for three (3) years for the Alberta Government in the Provincial Parks Department. In January of 1975, after the government reorganized the parks department, Craig decided to leave and found a job with Oliver Industrial in Lethbridge. He worked for them for a total of eight years. Craig has also worked for the Magrath Trading Company in the Meat and Grocery Department; for the St Mary Irrigation District; and for Bridgecom Electronics as a salesman. After completing Building Operator Courses at S.A.I.T. , in 1984 Craig came to the Magrath General Hospital where he is currently employed as a Maintenance Engineer. Sherry was also bom in Lethbridge but raised in Hill Spring. She also attended high School in Cardston, and this is where she met Craig. After graduating from High School she attended Jacobson's Beauty School in Calgary, and then transferred and subsequently graduated from the Alberta Beauty School in Lethbridge. She worked for a hair salon in Lethbridge for a short time. FAMILY Craig and Sherry were married in Cardston in 1973. After travelling around for one and one half years while Craig was still with Provincial Parks, they decided to settle in Magrath. Both had family here; Craig's parents, Arnold and Shirley Godionton, as well as Sherry's grandparents, (of interest- Sherry's grandmother was the daughter of Billy Jacobs, one of the first to settle in Lehi Field, north of Magrath). Craig and Sherry have five children, all bom in Magrath: Jamie, Kelsey, Dustin, anner, and Leanne. About five year ago, we bought Sandblasted Cedar Signs, a business that had been started approximately six years earlier by John Dudley. We have thoroughly enjoyed this new business of creating any variety of sign that we have been commissioned to do. PROCESS We start with solid pieces of cedar and then laminate them together to the size of the sign that is required. The wood is then prepared for the template to be put on. Sherry creates the design that is to go on the sign. It's then Craig's turn to take over. He spends hours speeding up nature's weathering process by sandcarving the sign. When the sandcarving is completed, then comes all of the finishing processes. Many hours are spent sanding, until it reaches the point where we are ready to start painting the surfaces. All of the finishes that are used on our signs are of the highest Xquality and are long-lasting high gloss finishes except for the finish that is put on the natural surfaces. This finish is especially designed for the elements that we have in our area, and although it does not shine like a varnish, it will also NOT peel, blister, or crack like a varnish, or any other kind of wood finish that is on the market. When a sign leaves our shop, it will last for years with very little maintenance because of these finishes. We hope people enjoy our signs, as we enjoy creating them. To date we have not yet found a design or a font for lettering that we can not dp. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks from the time an order is taken until the customer can leave with the finished product. We have also been doing sandcarving on rocks; either river or field rocks or marble. We have sandcarved rocks for trophies, or personal gifts (ie. a family name), as well as headstones for graves. Both Craig and I as well as all of our children are involved in the business in the evenings and on the weekends; producing products that we are very proud to display. "It's been a GREAT weekend for the team. We've worked towards it. We wanted to play our best at the Sportsplex and we did! Everyone contributed to these great wins. It is the FIRST time that Magrath has won this Tournament." He continued , "In sports you have a lot of'lows', so when you have these 'positive' moments you enjoy them and that's what we are doing!!! PLAYERS COMMENTS DANNY BALDERSON- "We played hard and smart against Raymond. They didn't play as well as they are capable of playing. Our defense was really strong- limiting their shots." "Against LCI we were off to a good start, but then we ran into foul trouble. In the second half we were able to hit some three pointers and also made our foul shots which really counted as well." "I really feel good about going to the Provincials. We worked for this and it feels good to have won, not just for ourselves but for the fans that supported us as well!" BART HARRIS- " Our players are peaking at the right time. Our whole team was HOT at the beginning, then we had a bit of a slump, but we've pulled together again". "Any player off the bench seems to put in something right off the bat. We all just seem to have found our roles. I feel confident going into the Provincials". " Our coach has done a great job; he sets up the plays and in our last game he came up with new plays right close to the end of the game. He utilizes all of our strengths." AARON KINDER - " I thought that we all played well as a team; not selfish for points. After the game we all had a really good feeling because Magrath has never won this tournament before." "Our coach is one of the best around. He may get mad at you, but you know that he expects you to do your best; you know were you stand. He's always 'up' and 'positive'. "I think that Raymond deserves to be at the Provincials as well. Whenever they play against us they always play their best, because there is a rivalry there. If we play them in Edmonton I think that we can beat them!" CASSIO MAFFIA - came to us from Brazil last August and is residing with the Rick Beres Family. Speaking very little English , school was quite a challenge at first. He is in grade 10 and hopes to be here for the remainder of his high School education. "I like Magrath. The city I came from in Brazil has a population equal to all of Canada. When it first snowed I really liked it, but now this is too cold." "During the final game, we all played well in the first half. Into the second half we were down by 3 points. Our coach called a Time Out and told us to take the game and so we did!" CRISTIANO RUY Hats off to this pleasant young man who (his 2nd year in Canada) speaks English fluently and who has been a driving force on the Zenith team. "Raymond played well; their inside shots were good, but their outside shots were just not counting”. In the final game against L.C.I., Cristiano had a little trouble. "Going up for up a rebound, an L.C.I. player elbowed me". The crowd gasped, when Cristiano got up from the floor with blood streaming down his face. Stopping only long enough to apply a bandaid , he was quickly back on the floor to finish the game. The victory assured, seven stitches were needed above his left eye. "I really like Magrath. The fans are good—a good crowd. The people are good, and the school is good." Various families have been instrumental in helping this young man remain here for his schooling. The families of: Rusty Rollingson, Wayne Harris, Wes Balderson, and now John Ferguson have opened their homes and their hearts to this exceptional young man. He tells me that his main objective in being here is to "play basketball, and to hopefully be spotted by the bigleague scouts". Well they have spotted him and he has been offered Scholarships at three different institutions across the border. GOOD LUCK CRISTIANO!!! CONGRATULATIONS Yahoo! We did it! We, the Magrath Novice Hawks are the WESTWINDS NOVICE "B" CHAMPIONS for 92-93. How did we do it? Read on. Raymond hosted the 8 teams involved in the Novice "B" Playoffs on March 11-13. Our FIRST GAME was Friday, March 12 against Great Falls I. For the first time in a long time we outshot our opponents and quite handily, 27-8. Chris Chatwin played well in goal making a couple of sensational glove saves when we really needed them; earning him a 6-0 shut-out. Helping Chris and the Hawks were: Del Thompson 2-1; Janay Chipman 1: Denver Wetherelt 1; Kyle Harker 1-2 Jim Balderson 1: ASSISTS : Josh Heggie, Peter Lee and Justin Shaw. GAME STAR was Del Thompson Our SECOND GAME was Saturday morning March 13 I 93. This game was our do-or-die game; we had to win or we were out. Once again Chris Chatwin in net came up with many sensational saves. The entire team played like they wanted to win after a rather loud pep talk from Danny, during the break between the second and third periods. Two unanswered goals in the third period gave us a 4-2 win. GOAL GETTERS : Chad Ratke-1; Janay Chipman-1; Del Thompson 1-1 Jim Balderson 1-2; ASSISTS: Peter Lee-1; well earned GAME STAR - Chris Chatwin. On to the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. We faced Great Falls II, Saturday afternoon in hopes of becoming the Westwinds Novice "B" Champs and after 63 minutes of controversial hockey, we did just that! With our second shut-out of the playoffs. Chris stopped 21 shots including 5 breakaways. In the three games 58 shots on goal—Chris stopped 56 of them! GREAT JOB CHRIS! Thanks. The rest of the team played very well and were justly crowned "CHAMPS" Our GOAL GETTERS: Jim Balderson-2; Josh Heggie 1-1 Assists: Del Thompson - 2; Kyle Schneyder-1; GAME STAR: Jim Balderson. After a bit of water bottle squirting on the ice, the team accepted their FIRST PLACE TROPHIES and posed for a few group pictures. They skated proudly to the dressing room to the loud chanting of the fans. CONGRATULATIONS HAWKS! You deserve it. Thanks Danny, Jim and John — you did a great job! PEEWEE Our FINAL playoff game against Vauxhall was played here in Magra on March 10 / 93. After losing 6-3 in Vauxhall, we had to win by four goals in order to become the Westwinds Pee Wee Champs. At the end of the first period we were on fire and were winning 42, which meant we only needed one more goal to tie it and two to win. Our boys started to fade halfway through the second period when Vauxhall came back with two quick goals and we went to the dressing room tied 4-4. The third period had Vauxhall score two more goals and win 6-4. Our boys played a much better and more disciplined game than they did in the first game in Vauxhall. A little hard on the nerves from time to time but this game - a pleasure to watch. GOAL GETTERS: Tommy Lee-1-1; Lome McKelvev-2-1; Greg Henry-1; ASSISTS: Ryan Ripley, Kurtis Robinson and Joey Zsombor. CONGRATULATIONS boys on a Playoffs. very successful season; FIRST in the League and SECOND in the Alberta Libera! It always looks saggy and puffy. What can I do? Signed SAGGY Dear Saggy, Tone your face muscles. Exercise is the best method of toning any area of the body.
