Summary:The annual publication of the students of Wilson Junior High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 1987-88) BOB MCHARDY FACE PRINTSFACE PRINTS 1987-88EDITOR'S MESSAGE As you walk down that long hallway, you see people smiling, couples holding hands and others just visiting. In addition, older students are helping the grade sevens around and showing them quick, new ways to get things done. Many even give directions to parents as to where the office is. At Wilson Junior High school, we make new friends while keeping the old ones. It is also a place where memories are found. In later years, these memories provide the basis for great stories - great stories recounting the "Spirit of 88". We leave our childhood behind as we enter Wilson Junior High school. It is here that we begin not only our futures, but also our adulthood. I wish you all the best in the years to come.PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE It is an honor to have been asked to make a short contribution to your year book. During the past decade I have had the opportunity to be a part of the growth of Wilson Junior High School as both a teacher and as an assistant-principal. I have witnessed our school move forward in all phases of school life. Our academic achievements and viable co-curricular program have made V7ilson one of the finest junior high schools in Alberta. The credit for our successes has been due to the dedicated staff, the conscientious student body and the supportive school community. One of the criteria of an effective school is that, "An individual just feels good entering the building." That is how I have felt since re-joining Wilson Junior High. Thank you for making my return so pleasant. May I take this opportunity to wish you all the best of luck and a happy, safe holiday.Back Row: Ngoc Tran, ?, Tina Nishida, Trish Graveland, Jennifer Fletcher Front Row: Shelley Emms, Melody Hacker, Terri Clarke (Editor), Debbie Yee (Assistant-Editor) Karen Staten and Justine Bolen Missing: Lee Nemeth (Assistant-Editor), Jay-Lynn Lavallee, Marcia Wood The year book staff wishes everyone a "great summer of ’88". We have chosen for our theme "The Spirit of '88". As you turn the pages of your year book you will see example after example of that spirit because Wilson is alive with enthusiasm and vigor. It permeated our classes, it filled our hallways, it inspired our teams and it captured us all. We hope this year book will bring back many fond memories in the years to come of Wilson's "Spirit of '88". YEAR BOOK STAFFThanks The year book would like to say a special thanks to the following people for their invaluable service in putting together the '87-88 edition of FACEPRINTS: Mrs. Bailey: sorting mug shots Ms. Cathy Doucette: ICP representative Mrs. Kolb: staff advisor Mr. McKay (and all the members of the photography club) responsible for all the photographs in the year book. Mr. Mokoski: chief staff advisor Mr. Ramsay: finances and the book campaign Mrs. Ruston: sorting mug shots and typingFads & Fashion Nothing shows spirit more than the fads and fashions you bring to school. Wilson was rich with interesting fashions and exciting fads. Of course if you are on the leading edge of a fashion rage you have to be just a little bit brave. Wade Smith's smooth shaven temples caught lots of side glances and the admiration of many of his classmates. It accomplished what it was supposed to — many a girl asked to rub that clean shaven head. Hardly an arm could be seen without a "friendship bracelet". Skateboards continued to be the rage with the male set and orthodontic appliances could be seen behind many a smile. Designer lockers were common and Garfield was ubiquitous. What Was In In '88 Friendship Bracelets Skateboards Converse Allstars Denim shirts and skirts Miniskirts and ankle socks Tinny grins (braces) Bubble gum Designer lockers Designer haircuts and hairdosPowerAint We Got FunWilson shows the way when it comes to heart and spirit. School is more than book learning. It is fun and good times where ever you are and what ever you do —from the cafeteria, to the halls, to the fields, to the classrooms. Everyone joins in to feel the excitement and have a good time.We Got Spirit Yes We DoThink about SPIRIT and you immediately think of our "dress-up" days. Almost everyone gets into the act. Whether the school is full of witches and vampires, or twins galore. .the SPIRIT SOARS!!INTRAMURALS Intramurals — the Spirit Soars Intramurals kindled our competitive spirits in many ways. In, '87-'88 Wilson was a place to compete and have a lot of FUN doing it. We certainly weren't all able to make the "big teams" but a lot of us wanted to participate . .and vie did. Thanks to Mrs. Pomahac, Mr. Major and a host of others, we had fun, competitive activities almost every noon hour. With the emphasis on fun, we played grass hockey, volleyball, beach ball and even the suicide long run. We carved pumpkins, unscrambled shoes and did a myriad of other things all in the fall of '87. Everyone could play a part and they did. Intramurals really helped to make our spirits soar. 1. Dave Williams goes for the gold. 2. Sharon Lusak receives the Golden Boot Award. 3. Ross Assoon receives his Golden Boot Award. 4. Aaron Barnes steps into the ball. THE BIG BOOT CONTESTField Hockey These champs got spirit!!! Each team consisted of 10 players, each with 2 laced shoes. With this sport, you didn't have to be athletic, you just had to know your shoes! Rob Slawson, Champions Back row: Tina Nishida, Wade Sackman, Rob Warren, Caralyn Orser Front row: Daniel Yu, Van Diep, Jennifer Lakey, Jan Allen, Rhonda PaulenceMORE INTRAMURALS m y CARVING CONTEST _MUSIC RAISES THE SPIRIT Music is always uplifting to the spirit. Wilsons music program generates plenty of enthusiasm and spirit through Jazz Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble and the Grade Seven and Grade Eight bands. Besides playing at the Awards Night Assembly, the Christmas Concert, the bands go to feeder elementary schools for band concerts. In the spring there was a band retreat and we also had an exchange with Edmonton.BUSY HANDS Who says school is just book learning? Wilson's industrial arts program provides experience with a wide variety of common hand and power tools. We learned how to use these tools in a safe, practical manner. Under the guidance of Mr. Fekete and Mr. Holt we added another dimension to our education.AND MORE Hands-on learning came in many areas. Boys learned sewing skills; girls learned the basics of wood lathes. VJe fit together the puzzle of culture in social studies. And we learned word processing and programming in our computer equipped labs.Grade 9 On Being In Grade Nine What's it like being in grade nine? When you're in grade nine, your the best you know, numero uno. You know all the teachers and how to get on their good sides. And of course, you also know what you can do to bug the teachers! Everyone looks up to you because you know the school - you are the leaders. When you are in grade nine, you know that you're responsible for school spirit. It was great to be the engine that generated the "spirit of "88". It's something we need to make life enjoyable. How is it that a big sprawling building full of box-like class rooms can be alive with spirit? People give it spirit! Somebody kindled that spirit in Wilson many years ago and each new class that enters is affected by it. It is the senior class - the grade nines - which usually bears the torch. The class of S7-88 have been true leaders. They kept the torch burning fiercely. FACEPRINTS asked many grade nines about their feelings on spirit. Just a very few of their responses appear on this page. FACEPRINTS: Why is school spirit so important? MEL FLEXHAUG: So we can have a great year with lots of fun and to show other schools that we have more spirit than they do. FACEPRINTS: Is it the grade 9s who generate school spirit? MEL FLEXHAUG: Right'. They show examples of what school spirit is and we always attend our home games and cheer on our teams. We believe in spirit. And believe me - WE HAVE IT'. FACEPRINTS: Why is school spirit important? AMBER NELSON: Because it builds up the spirits of every one in the school. FACEPRINTS: Are the grade 9s the real movers behind school spirit at Wilson? DANNY RUDE: Yes and no. everyone, not just grade 9s seem to get involved in our activities. FACEPRINTS: Has Wilson got school spirit? TARA ORSER: You bet! Look at the student support for intramurals and the fierce competition to make the honor roll. FACEPRINTS: Why is school spirit important? CLIFF HAMILTON: Because it affects what work we get done and it makes it a better place to be.H H i ■ ■ Grade 8 On Being in Grade Eight Grade Eight means co-operation. It is making friends. Grade Eight is opportunities. It means people working together as a team. It is also creativity.being able to express yourself. Grade Eight is learning.learning things about others but most of all it is learning about yourself. Grade Eight is keeping in touch with reality but it is also reaching out into fantasy. Grade Eight is that wonderful inbetween time when we have lots of memories of grade seven to look back on as well as the high hopes and excitement of grade nine to look forward to. Looking back on the year the best part was sharing the present with a great bunch of classmates and friends. You no longer get 15 minutes recesses. Instead you get two minutes to get from class to class. I guess if you add those all together, you just come short of the recess time, but nevertheless junior high seems to be rush, rush, rush. But no matter what grade you're in you need friends. SPIRIT OF 88 SPIRIT OF 88 There’s a feeling building in the air, I feel it and so it’s only fair. To tell everyone just how I feel, To show those who are sad how to heel. Cause it’s building up inside of me. Needing and wanting to get free. I want to scream it in the streets, The good feeling I have from my head to my feet. A good feeling of peace and love, I’m not sure if it comes from above. But I just have to let everyone know, I have to let those good feelings go. Tell everyone there’s no need to hate. Cause this year there’s the spirit of 88. by Roxanne Strong Grade 9 SPIRIT OF "88" Laughing, yelling down the halls. Is the sound of school spirit, Bounc ing happily off the walls. In ”88" you can always hear it. The Winter Olympics build excitement. Making the spirit of 88 rise. In our hearts is where it went. Bringing a sparkle to our eyes. All round the spirit rings Bringing love and peace to our hearts. It lifts us up and always brings A feeling that makes us not want to part. So through the year of 88, The spirit will always fill the air Making no one feel any hate. Cause to break it no one dares. by Roxanne Strong Grade 9See Spot. See Spot run. I'm sorry Ur. We REALLY stood out in the crowd and were the envy of other schools. Also, our excellent behavior throughout the day brought us compliments. We really did well despite the cool temperature and the ever present wind. Wilson won the midget girls, senior girls and senior boys trophies. We also tied with Paterson for the overall aggregate award. Especially outstanding were: Midget girls - Laura Tsujikawa Sharmon Mercer Crystal Hughes Lorraine Buburz Midget boys - Ross Assoon Junior girls - Jessica McPhee Tasha Turner Senior girls - Kathryn Fode Kim Hughes CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL'.VOLLEYBALL SENIOR GIRLS BACK ROW: Mr. Major, Joanne Filgas, Debbie Van Voorst,Tara Orser, Dionne Goshinmon FRONT ROW: Melissa Setoguchi, Judg Trinl Natasha Rockwell, Melanie Flexhaug, Jennifer Jackson. This team had spirit, drive and enthusiasm as well as plenty of team discipline. And one of their additional attributes is that its four grade 8s will be back for another season next year. The Junior Girls made their mark early by establishing a consistent record of winning. Their enthusiasm and dedication contributed in no small measure, to these girls winning both the league and the City Championship. No doubt, Wilson will be a dominant volley ball team in years to come.BUMP SET SMASH The Senior Boys were in a rebuilding- year but they still provided us with lots of exciting, competitive volleyball. While the Seniors didn't win the league, they showed spirit and determination each time out. A special mention should go to Marty Burr who showed such enthusiasm as team manager. The Junior Boys Volleyball team won the City League as well as the City Championship in the 87-88 season. Team members were hard working and aggressive. Each game was a challenge with everyone contributing and coming up big with that winning spirit. SENIOR BOYS BACK ROW: Mr. Redpath, Trevor Thompson, Brett Johnson, Devon Matheson, Kar Kong Leung. The girls improved considerably as the season came to an end. With the high calibre of knowledge the players gained during the season, those who continue in basketball next year will be a valuable asset to the Wilson teams. Miss Jack, a former student teacher at Wilson, continued throughout the season as coach and was very instrumental in teaching the players the fine points, and technical aspects of basketball. Thanks Miss Jack. The War Queens attended 3 tournaments this season and captured the consolation at the Raymond and Cardston Tournament. They lost to St. Francis by one point,in the consolation final at the Paterson tournament. Melanie Flexhaug and Tara Orser were chosen to the All Star Team at the Paterson torunament, while Deawn Goshinmon was chosen a Raymond Tournament All Star. All the boys showed a desire to do their best at all times. With many on the team playing for their first time, what was most evident was the improvement that was made in the 3 months they played together. The team showed great sportsmanship - which is the greatest compliment I can give. The team attended 2 tournaments this year, one in. Coaldale where we lost by 2 points in the consolation final and one in Medicine Hat where again we lost by a squeaker in the consolation. In semi final league play, we lost another heartbreaker, this time by 1 point. In all I'm sure the boys had' fun and hopefully learned somevhing in our time together as a team. Best of luck to the boys in their future endeavours in Basketball. Junior Boys Basketball Back Row: Felix Janse, Darren Gugyelka, David McDonald, Stuart Wickend, Darcy Smith, Coach Janet Gugyelka. The Senior Boys Basketball team had a very successful year. The team had exceptional talent. The league was a tough one and the boys finished third. The Warlords showed better in out-of- town tournaments. A 23 point effort by Kar Kong Leung in Cardston, led the Warlords to a second place finish, losing only by 2 points in the final. In Fort Macleod, Brett Michelson received All Star Honors while the Warlords trampled the competition winning the championship. Overall, the Warlords are a young and talented team, guaranteed of success in the future.BADMINTON GRAVE EIGHT GIRLS BADMINTON TEAM STANDING: Mr. Zaugg, Kim Schlacter, Carla Kembel, Covina Cojocariu, Gaylyn Webber, Debbie lee, Mr. Rowell Debi Voorst, Judy Trinh SITTING: Jonesa Wohlwend, Lina Chang, Tracey lau GRADE SEVEN GIRLS BADMINTON TEAM BACK ROW: Barb Clark, Simone Valin- Farmer, Mrs. Zimmerman, Tracy Orr, Shawna Freeman, Shannon Chow FRONT ROW: Kelly Vandenberg, Jocelyn Cordel, Melanie Mok, Lee Bang, Jenny Lakey, Laura Tsujikawa GRADE NINE GIRLS BADMINTON TEAM Back Row: Jennifer Jackson, Yolanda Loo, Sherry Hall, Louise Nelson, Mrs. Pomohac. The first trip in January saw four busloads of ski buffs head out for Fernie. Luckily, the weather was perfect and so was the snow. Everyone had a real bash! In March, after the Olympics ended, we took another trip — this time to the Olympic mountain at Nakiska. The four hour -one way - bus trip was worth it. Again we had perfect conditions to test out skills on the Olympic mountain.OLYMPIC SPIRIT CANADA WELCOMES THE WORLD The XV Olympia Winter Games were staged in Calgary from Feb. 13 to 28, 1988. These games were the most important winter sport aompetition e er e m Canada and one of the most exciting sports events ever. The Olympia Winter Games were not just a sports event. The Olympia Arts Festival began m January 1988, as a visual, literary and performing arts celebration. This festival transcended the cultural heritage of Canada as the host nation and the bearer of the games. The games, of course, provided an occasion m which athletes of the world could strive to achieve excellence in sports in an atmosphere of international friendship and goodwill. The games demonstrated the union of different cultures and countries. Few countries have been honoured to host such a spectacular event. We as Canadians all jelt proud to share the Olympic spirit. They tadvised Dan to stretch out well and enjou Ithe fun. iThey also told Dan to give the other Itorch bearer a big hug beforer taking the I torch. What a proud moment when Dan Ireceived the torch. The torch was heavy Ibut somehow it felt good. Dan made the I fastest kilometer run that morning. iwilson is proud to have one of its own Iparticipate in the Olympic Torch Relay. ICongratulations Dan.and how about twilling us your Olympic Torch Relay suit?THE ASSEMBLY OF THE NATIONS — advisor classes were grouped into threes to represent some twelve Olympic nations MR. WALKER prepared to burn his fingers .well actually he was preparing to light the Olympic flame. With all eyes on Calgary hosting the Olympic Winter Games, Wilson caught the Olympic spirit by having its own Winter Olympic games. Over a three and a half week period, Wilson held ten events which were similar to the real Olympics. Lethbridge weather being what it is, the Wilson Winter Olympics had to be staged indoors. We performed miracles in turning our gymnasium into a stadium for bobsled, luge, biathlon, hockey, speed skating, ski jumping and alpine skiing. The most gritty competition was, by all accounts, the spaghetti eating contest. You can bet these games were a smash. For some of us, this was as close as we would get to participating in any Olympics. A gold medal for organizing should have been awarded to Mr. Major and Mrs. Pomahac for their ganizing the Wilson Winter Olympics!! In its first year (1987) we raised more than we expected and we had high hopes for 1988. Mr. Stefan and his drama classes got us all off to a raucous start. There were songs and skits and pies in the face. All of this was to help remind us that many of the things we enjoyed in the 1987-88 school year were financed by the 1987 Know It All. Yes, our yearbooks were subsidized to the tune of $5 each, and we all got loads of Winit stickers at 25j each and we loved those cold water fountains and the giant push ball and on and on and on. Prizes this year ranged from a color TV with remote control and a 3 month subscription to cable to ghetto blasters, digital telephones and so on. The prize winners assembly was great fun. Almost one student in four won a prize. The eleven grand prize winners were: Rich Aujesky, Nicole Sahalht, Mike Vandesteeg, Carol Heynen, Ben Dick, Shandel Langager, Tara Taylor, Cheri Yoshioka, Allen Jonsson, Danny Rude, Trevor Inaba Of course Rich, being the number one money raiser, picked the color T.V. Best of all we raised some $15,000 to run our school activities for 1988-89. IThe spirit of "88" rose to frenzied neights on many a Friday evening during the 187-88 school year. We opened the year with fantastic Halloween Dance. Everyone came |in costume and boogied the night away, scenber brought the Christmas dance where everyone put on their finest fashions. In February we celebrated the Calgary Winter Olympics with our cwn Olympics and an Olympic Village-Valentines Dance. Everyone put on their favorite team sweaters to come to this dance. Our last big dance was too late to meet the yearbook deadline but it had| Beach theme. DAZZLIN'DANCESDAZZLIN' DANCESDANNY RUDE - PRESIDENT 1987-88 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 4s another year at Wilson Junior High comes to an end, we all wonder what lies ahead of us in the future. Just take a few moments, however, to remember all of the great times that there have been throughout the 1987-1988 school year. The new term got underway and soon it was time to make your decision as to who would represent you as Wilson's students' council. The council was then chosen and it was time for us to begin planning a very successful year. Throughout the year, many popular activities were organized for all students to enjoy. The dances, including the Christmas dance, at which we were able to collect a great number of non- perishable food items for the needy, and the sock hops, were once again among the fan-favorites. Other activities which were given great response were the Air Band contest in November and both of the ski trips, one to Fernie and the other to Nakiska. All of these activities and more would not have taken place without the guidance of Mr. Zaugg and Mr. McKay, and the hard work of students' council. You the student body of Wilson Junior High have made our work worthwhile and the year a success, through your helpful support and enthusiastic participation. The team is divided into two main groups: a) those who are going through training (JUNIOR) and b) those who completed the training. The Peer Support Team this year has participated in these activities: Wilson Calorie Counters, Heart to Heart matches, Peer Tutoring, Grade 9 Drivers' Education Program, new student orientation, and Witches' Brew at the Hallowe’en dance. In January, February and March the students have been polishing rocks by tumbling them in rock tumblers. After Easter several field trips are planned. DUNGEONS DRAGONS Dungeons and Dragons fanatics meet four noon hours a week with Dungeon Master, Ms. T. Iehino. This avid group of players takes great'delight in tracking down their opponents and administering heinous punishments op them. The players claim their game is a heady one which takes the concentration of a chess player along with the nerve of a poker player. In any case, the club is one of the most active in the school and the group clearly enjoys their game. Its membership has climbed from about 30 from a year ago, to 132 students. All are from grades 7 to 9. Practice sessions have increased from two 45 minute noon hours to 6 hours per week. All this fun and frolic happened every Wednesday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m. The result was that Wilson was a badminton force to be reckoned with. Wilson made a very strong showing during the McCoy Southern Alberta Regional Badminton Tournament in March. That I feel so alone? I am an island surrounded by waters of anger. Searching in a forest of doubt Never seeing light, groping in the dark. Here I stand alone, head held high, walk, of confidence. But that isn’t me It is an act. My heart is a theatre of painful emotions. Will I ever find happiness? Happiness do I know the the meaning of the word? Every time I come close, it's beyond my grasp. It comes back to taunt and tease me. What is it with me, that happiness runs away? I'm coming to the end of the tunnel I see tight. Happiness is in my heart, if only I let it shine.
