Summary:The annual publication of the students of Catholic Central High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 1984-85) Table Section faculty Seniors Clu hs juniors pteshmen rPtcliviUes l\h verhsinj Contents Qacje 5 15 37 91 99 67 ISDedication This page is dedicated entirely to Father April, to show our appreciation of his fine photography displayed throughout our 1984/85 yearbook. He was a great help to the yearbook staff and also to any students wishing to have an album of high school memories to treasure. We are sure that Father will be missed greatly next year and look forward to his return in the fall of ’86.Chaplain's M\essage “Do you accordingly on your part strive diligently to supply your faith with virtue, your virtue with knowledge, your knowledge with self-control, your self- control with patience, your patience with piety, your piety with fraternal love, your fraternal love with charity.” 2 Peter 1:5-7 With the above wisdom of St. Peter, approach life; in the present, here and now, grow in charity. God Bless You, Father Chauvin. In September, 1984, Pope John Paul II visited Canada, making a stop in Edmonton. Some Catholic Central students made the trip to the capital for a very moving and powerful Mass. Through his guidance, Pope John Paul has given the youth of Canada hope and strength for our future lives.Student Council Standing, from Left: Mr. Rocheleau, Karen Smulders (Social Convenor), Lori Gallant (Gr. 12 Rep), Kathy Chernezky (Treasurer), Dean Homulos (President), Sheri Rusznak (1st Vice President), Lori Mclnrue (Secretary), Gaetanne Linders (Gr. 12 rep). Front; Susie Vitkovic (Gr. 10 rep), Diana Smits (Gr. 10 rep), Barb Babott (Gr. 11 rep), Laura Bethlehem (Gr. 11 rep), Florence Pastoor (2nd Vice President). This last year was a big success for the whole bunch of us. My only regrets for my last year of high school would probably be not having some of the events that we wanted. 1 am sure that if we would have been able to go through with them, this year would have been even better still! The Fashion Show, Tri-School Variety Show, The Gr. 12 Breakfast and assemblies and noise parades, just to name a few, were all a great success and a lot of fun to be a part of. My Gr. 12 year proved never a dull moment for me. Being a member of Booster and Assembly Clubs, Safegrad and Grad Committees, the OverSeas Education Group, the Cougar basketball team, and of course Student’s Council, kept me very busy and very involved. 1 feel tfiat being Student Council President has helped me become a more independent person. My only hope is that the year 1984/85 at Catholic Central High School will be a good memory. Thank you. President'sfa c ulli) Fr. It is an appropriate thought to reflect upon, on this our graduation day. It is indeed a time for moving forward, as we begin, with anticipation and some uncertainty, a new chapter in our lives, and it is a time for looking back on twelve years of accomplishments, and failures, joys, frustrations, growth and friendship. We do this with some sadness, as we will leave behind many friends as we go our separate ways. 1 am certain, however, that many of these friendships will endure the test of time and that we shall be “friends forever . We will fondly remember our classmates and the experiences we shared at Catholic Central; the games, the parties, the classes, the good times and the bad. These experiences have given us a lasting closeness and our high school memories full substance. We will treasure these memories and carry them in our hearts and in our minds forever. The closeness we feel for one another extends to our teachers, who shared with us their knowledge, their expertise, and their time; teaching the academics and laying a firm foundation of knowledge. You have helped us to learn about ourselves intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Each of you has influenced us in your own unique way. By far the most important people in our lives are our parents and our families. To you we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude and appreciation; for your love, guidance, support and encouragement have brought us to this moment. You were our first and best teachers. It is easy to dwell in the fond memories of the past - however, it is more difficult to speak with confidence about the future. How do we apply all that we have learned over the past 12 years? What is our duty to ourselvesand to humanity? If I may quote William Shakespeare, “all the world’s a stage; and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances: and one man in his time plays many parts.” Each of us has a part to play and we have received the foundation to enable us to play our parts well. We all have God-given talents with infinite possibilities for growth and achievement, if we have but the courage and determination to develop these talents to their fullest potential. Our formal school education may be drawing to a close this year, but we have only just begun to learn. At all times however; we have the guidance of God and the continued support and encouragement of our families. Fellow graduates, we are the promise of tomorrow. Upon us are pinned the hopes and dreams of past generations and to us falls the responsibility of preserving and shaping the world which is our inheritance. Let us accept this responsibility proudly. Let us move forward into the unknown with courage and commitment, dedicating our lives to the service of God and mankind. Let us use in our own special ways the lessons we have learned and the knowledge we have gained, to improve the lives of people everywhere. Fellow graduates, we have dreams to realize, and promises to fulfill. Let us act with courage and conviction, moving forward to unlimited horizons of conquest and endeavor. Wherever we go, and whatever we do, let us look back with joy on the time we spent together, and let us truly remain, with one another and all mankind, “friends forever”.dprab (fcom tn itlee Top Row, from Left: Barb Kortt, Ronda Vandenhengel, Robin Trieber, Dean Homulos. The girl’s team was very successful winning zones and earning the right to represent the south at provincials. At provincials Florence came in third and Susan came in eighth in the individual competition.Citten Volleyball The Cittens had a successful and enjoyable volleyball season in 1984, winning various tournaments and doing very well in others. We finished off the season by winning the post season tournament and playing the best that we had ever played. We beat the league’s first place team and enjoyed every minute of it. It was a tremendous feeling to have been so successful. Our team was grateful to have two members chosen as league all-stars; power-hitter Barb Kortt, and middle blocker Laura Bethlehem. Although our success was brought on by every team member’s effort, many thanks go out to our coach Mary Dyck, who put in so much time and effort to guide us to a tremendous success. Best wishes for another great season in 1985!Cougar Football Top, from Left: Ed Kremenik, Brett Ries, Glenn Jankowiak, Mike Lynagh, Mark Hagel, Ron Tratch, Albert Beaudin, Kevin Garinger, Andy Kolasko, Scott Chadsey, Duane Kambeitz, Shawn Wapple, Ron Bodie. 2nd Row; Neil Warsing, Frank Nemeth, John Doberstein, Willy Moynan, Rob Iuvale, Doug Hamilton, Barry Weighill, Rob Kern, Paul Gleason, Jeff Koep. 3rd Row; Mr. Credico, (coach), Morgan Munroe, (coach), Rod Garinger, Rob Krushel, Tim Armstrong, Scott Armstrong, Des Sullivan, Roy Chanda, Joe Davies, Fr. The squad consisted of thirteen girls for both football and basketball. Our football season was long, cold and wintery. We all remember the thick heavy coats, quilted gloves, warm boots and lots of kleenex — and the snowball fights. Basketball took much of our spare time which was spent practicing. The practices rewarded us with first place at St. Francis in Calgary. We also won the First Annual South Zone Cheerleading in Medicine Flat. Our squad has had many ups and downs this year but the end result was a joy-filled year of memories and true friendships. Best of Luck to next year’s squad! This year’s Cougar team was a good example of how a group of guys could work together and win when they wanted to. This year’s starting line consisted of Mark Hagel, Dennis Fiorino, Mark Herauf, Dean Homulos and swivel starter Ed Travalglia. The team had grown to know each other and as a team, worked to better themselves as a group; not individually. Throughout the league, the Cougars placed 8th. This allowed advancement to the Zone Playoffs; where the Cougars were noted for defensive tactics and good rebounding skills. The Gr. 10’s and ll’s proved to be great support and will probably do well next year. The team would like to thank the two coaches for coaching the Cougars for the 84/85 year. Thank you. The ’84/85 Cittens basketball team was very successful this year, staying in second place in the league all season, doing very well in every tournament, and finally winning first place at Zones. We entered provincials at Grande Prairie as team 1 from the South, and ended the tournament by winning the Cittens first ever 4A Provincial title. The Southern Alberta High School Basketball League chose two allstars, Barb Kortt and Laura Bethlehem from the Cittens, although every single team member contributed to our overwhelming feat, both on and off the court. Coach Cal O’Brien has done an outstanding job in helping us in every way possible to win the title this year. It would not have become a reality without him and he does deserve enormous thanks. The best of luck to the ’85/86 Cittens, may you win it all a second time! In 1985, Catholic Central joined the new rugby league with a determined Cougar team. Though most of the players had never played the sport before, the team quickly caught on. The league also contained teams from LCI, Winston Churchill, and Immanual Christian. The Cougars finished the season second only to LCI, an excellent finish for our first year. Tim Armstrong also won the league’s most valuable player award. RugbyGrad'85 fashion Show A Passage through timeThe 1985 fashion show was a great success! After school for weeks you could find all the participants practicing diligently on the correct way to walk and turn but “the hard work paid off in the end”. However, it was not all work, it was fun also. One never forgets the “butterflies in the stomach” or the “knees of jelly” that occurred before his/her turn to walk out on stage and the relief of making it off the stage without tripping in front of the audience. Special thanks are due to the co-ordinators, Mrs. Viney and Mrs. Neihaus, and to the commentators, Miss Lethbridge 1985 - Tanis Hargrave and Trevor Viney. Without their help, the show would not have been the success it was. I have very much enjoyed my reign as Miss C.( .H. 1985 for many reasons. The pageant itself was a great time. The other girls and I had a lot of fun trying to learn the dance routine, and getting nervous together right before the pageant began. Being involved in school activities is great, and topping ii i'll with this honour was a tremendous feeling. Presenting some awards at the Tri-School Variety Show, and saying a toast to the school at our graduation ceremonies were a couple of duties that I was honoured to perform, li was all in all a very rewarding experience and 1 encourage as many girls as possible to enter next year. I know you won't regret it!Stage Band SOUTHERN ALBERTA STAGE BAND FESTIVAL - CALGARY - 1985 [CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND] DIRECTOR : MR. MIKE RICHIE NATIONAL GOLD I The Stage Band had an exceptional year! We managed to capture the gold medal at the National Jazz Festival in Quebec City. This title would not have been possible without first receiving a superior rating at the Regional Festival in Calgary. A lot of hard w'ork and time were required to reach this level of competition. Extra practices w'ere held after school, during lunch, and on the weekend. What w'as left of our spare time was spent trying to raise the money to go to Quebec City. However, the hard work paid off for everyone involved — especially for Dave Lavkulik and Mark Wagner, both of whom received scholarships to Berklee College of Music and were named as members of the honor Stage Band in Calgary and Quebec. The Stage Band also did a lot of extra performances such as the festival in Red Deer, playing at the Library and at the Lodge Hotel, as well as playing with the concert band in the Christmas and Spring concert. Finally there are many thanks to Mr. Mike Richey without whom none of this w'ould have been possible and to the teachers, students, and parents whose support and encouragement helped us become the best in all of Canada.wx Greece-Lonbon Trip While the rest of the students were sitting in school the last day before Easter, 16 C.C.H. students, lead by Ms. Grbavac, Mr. Slavich and Mr. O’Brien joined students from W.C.H.S. for a different holiday. We took 14 days off through Easter spending 10 days throughout Greece and 4 days in London. We left Lethbridge on the morning of April fourth for Calgary, where we boarded our plane for Toronto. We transferred planes and left again, this time stopping in London before arriving at our final destination - Athens. Because of the time difference, we spent our first resting - for the rest of our stay in Greece. Throughout those first 10 days, our travels through Greece took us to places like Athens, Lindos, Delphi and to the island of Rhodes where we visited various museums and some ancient buildings and ruins. We also had free time for shopping and to explore cities on our own. The 10 days in Greece were quite interesting and exciting because of the difference in our two countries, such as the food, people, dress and customs. Coping with the difference in language was a problem but brought us some fun and humorous moments. We arrived in London on April 13th, for the last half of our trip. Even though England is a lot more similar to Canada than Greece is, the cultural difference can still be noticed. We spent those four days visiting places like Windsor Castle, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the famous Wax Museum. We also attended musical performances, ‘Cats’ and ‘Starlight Express’. The 14 days passed quickly and we found ourselves boarding the plane to take us home. Even though we were happy to be going home we didn’t want to leave. The trip gave us numerous memories of Greece and London, taught us about their history and culture, but also brought us closer together with the rest of the people on our trip.rALBERTA MEAT MARKET AmMAm skj 4 span zs 510 6 Ave. South 1289 3 Ave. South Lethbridge, Alberta Lethbridge, Alberta Phone 327-3492 Phone 329-6099 108 - 459 Mayor Magrath Drive (Sandman Inn Plaza) Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 3L8 AVIS GARRY A. It was the time to really get rolling and piece together a yearbook full of unforgettable memories of our high school days to treasure for many years to come Between unexpected travels, building houses, early events, and delayed schedules, this is what we, the yearbook staff, have mastered. We would like to give special thanks to Mr. Pisko, Reid Felske, and Father April for all their time, effort and patience they have given our small group. We hope that future yearbook staffs, in the years to come, will put as much energy and enthusiasm into making their books as we have. Since the last word is ours, we would like to wish Good Luck to all; and to take pride in being a part of Catholic Central, tor we are a loving and caring community.
