Summary:The annual publication of the students of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, Lethbridge, Alberta.(2003-04) •- ijStudent Life Week One .and then there were 1550. The 2003-2004 school year brought with it many changes, not only personal, but also to our school. 300 new grade 9's were added to the mix, making our hallways more crowded and changing the dynamics of the student body. As crazy as we thought L.C.I would become, the addition of the grade 9's wasn't so bad. Other than crowded hallways, a packed Cafeteria and a few more cars to contend with, L.C.I was still the same school it's always been. Our first days back at school were filled with catching up with friends we hadn't seen during the summer, switching our classes, gossiping, oh yeah, and that little thing called "learning". We all had to start planning for the future, making one final effort to do the best we could. The football and volleyball teams were already getting underway with tryouts and practices hoping for another successful season. Auditions for the Fall Production of Hansel and Gretel began almost as soon as we returned. The opportunity to travel was available to us, the Chamber Choir and Travel Club could finally tour Europe. The first week went by so fast that before we knew it we were well into another school vear. J As seniors at L.C.I, an abundance of grade 9's wasn't the only change we experienced. Entering our final years of public education we all had many questions about what this year would hold in store for us. For many of us this will be the last time we can really be teenagers before entering that scary thing called the real world, iii/: Mat/ Bell and lunira Milne Above: Students wait patiently to get their pictures taken for the yearbook and l.D cards. m .-Student Life - Week One Left: Grade 12 students Matt Bell, Laura Milne and others wait and listen to see what is to happen during their last year at LCI. Below: Catherine Dempsey, grade 12, welcomes the grade 9's to LCI.Green and Gold. Here at LCI we embody our school spirit like no one else. Go to any LCI sports game and you will experience the overwhelming support our teams recieve from the fans. Whenever there is a spirit day, like on October 3rd, there is no question as to what our school colours are; Green and Gold. Pro Scola et pro Patria! For thoseof you who don't know, that means 'for school and for country' (we think). Our teams are the Rams, the Colts, the Clippers and the Schooners. You haven't witnessed school spirit until you have been to an LCI sports game. All that said, "School Spirit" isn't necessarily all about dressing up and loud pep rallies. It's more about a sense of belonging, being proud of everything that makes up a building we spend more time in than any other place. We pride ourselves in trying to help all students feel connected and create a place they feel they belong. To our dear LCI - We will be t rue! - Helena Affleck and James Wade. wf^eiT! St intent life - Spirit & Student Life With a population of 1550 students, getting from class to class, here at LCI, is anything but easy. With an annoying giggle from the person behind you, a mass collision of every deodorant, body spray , perfume and clogne imaginable, you just know it's gonna be a fun filled day!! With the average height of five feet, a person in Grade Nine, unfortunately for them, are used as battering-rams, to push through massive jams in the hallways, from every grade level higher then them, with a rather snobby "better him then me" attitude. Never the less, let's try to put our best foot forward, and remember that was all us at one point. To help you out I have asked a few students, what they think are the Top Three Rules On How To Survive The Hallways: 1) "Anyone who stands in the middle of the hallways, in one of those circles, deserves eveything they get!!" 2) "Any body parts, you wish to keep, or has any importance to you, please keep at your sides at all times." 3) "Now's not the time tochange your mind, so pick a destination, and go there!!!" "Well, all I'm saying is that 1 want to look back and say that I did it the best 1 could when 1 was stuck in this place. Had as much fun as I could when I was stuck in this place. Played as hard as I could when I was stuck in this place.- Loved this place." -Sasha Jenson (Don Dawson) (Dazed and Confused) Above: Janelle Marietta, Mikail Tate and HeatherClauson-humm. not really sure what they are Above: The Hall Monitor (Mr. doing here, and why is the hallway so empty - arc you guys skipping class?? Student Life - Hal heat/: Lu ch .Would you like fries with that ??? At LCI this year, lunch was a time ^for students to mostly sit in the cafeteria and eat some kind of food with their friends. Of course, that is the people who were lucky enough to find a place to sit. This year at LCI the cafeteria was so crowded that tables were set up in the foyer in an effort to seat the masses of extra kids. Intramural sports took place almost every day and became a favorite activity for many students and provided a healthy way for students to get their daily intake of competitive fun. Many students also found their way to the drama room during lunch whether to watch a lunch box theatre piece, eat lunch in the green room, or watch a group of students' break dance, rap, and beat box. Many new activities sprung up as the year went on to help aleviate the pressure of crowded hallways. Getting an education is not just about getting good grades but also about becoming a good person, a good citizen, and best friend. Friendships from high school last a lifetime. You might not always remember your Periodic Table, but you will always remember the fun times with your friends. The best can change a frown into a smile, when you fall Exceeding the Limits down. The best of friends will understand your little trials, and lend a hand. The best of friends will always share your secret dreams, because they care. The best of friends, worth more than gold, give all the love a heart can hold. Most adults when asked what they .remember about their years at high school, don't recall the stimulating math, permatations or exciting literature reviews. What they often remember are the SPECIAL EVENTS they participated in during their years. Special Events are a time for students to get a break from the rigours of academics and enjoy what we all like best SOCL1ALIZING! From pep rallies to pride days. It is a chance for students to share their talents and their conversation. The following pages show L.C.I students participating in a variety of these events, such as our School Yard Rocks, foot- ball games, Winterdance, Green/Gold Color Day BBQ and the Snowflake Ball. Student Life - Sfwial fc’trn /s Halloween Standing Out in a Crowd Tlhis years Halloween celebration was a huge success at LC1. Many people in costumes roamed the hallways on October 28th. Colin Parsons strutted his stuff as Hugh Hefner, Mr. Kitigawa was a big baby (as everyone suspected), Stefanie Hjalmarson was Tinkcrbell (Sup, Tink?), and Karina Murray dressed up as Belle.AGAIN. The student council had been planning this event since late September to early October. They worked extremely hard to make this event happen, despite the fact that they ran into the problem of October 31st being a holiday. When the day finally came it was a huge success. The student council went around handing out candy to the students that dressed up, giving them an intensive sugar-high. With 1550 students to contribute talents and energy to our choral, instrumental music, drama, art and dance programs, we have had a fabulous year. Adding Grade9 students, and new fine arts staff to complement our existing awesome fine arts teachers, we have taken LCI from 'the way we were' to a new way that was bigger than we imagined! From the large crowds at the Yates for Hansel and Gretel, to Competition pieces in the spring, and Dancing with the 'big troupe' in 'Twas the Night Before Christmas', along with incredible Winter Dance and Spring Dance shows we raised our Dance and Drama programs to a new level. From Winter Concerts to the Kiwanis Music Festival; from Montreal Choral Festival appearances to the cathedrals of Europe; from Jazz Band and Concert Band performances to School Yard Rocks, the Choral and Instrumental music programs have soared to new heights. With the growth of the LCI. we are able to provide incredible opportunities for the fine arts, and for the students to produce and perform in our school.Thc Fine Arts program has truly- become LARGER THAN LIFE!- Mrs. Carol Steen Above: Tess Mitchell/ one of the enthusiastic drama students performing a monologue.
