One of these is roots; the other, wings." When we reflect on our years at L C. I., we can appreciate how we have developed these endowments. We will recall not only the textbook knowledge we have acquired or the building itself, but the people who have made our high school lives complete. The teachers who have not onlv tauaht us. but and the bad. These are the memories that we will always carry in our hearts and minds. The friendships we have formed, whether they last only this fleeting moment or endure the test of time, have all served to develop us as individuals and as people. But now the time for us to part and to seek our own roads in life has come. As we plunge Into the future, the friends we have made and the knowledge and heritage we have acquired here — our roots, will serve us well. But we will also have to serve a large responsibility to ourselves. In the years to come, we will all have to make many decisions that will affect our lives and those of others. When we do make them, we must make them as we choose — not as others would have us choose. We must be sincere with ourselves and with others. We must pass off the accepted norms of conformity and leam to be true to ourselves and our values. We must choose our field of endeavor with this In mind. Whatever our choices are, we must follow them through with vitality for even if our decisions prove to be poorly founded or wrong, they serve to broaden our scope. Our formal education may end this year but we have only begun to leam. To be human is to continually grow and develop. When we search for our place in life we must do it based on our values and priorities but we must find it at our pace in our own way. Happiness is only found when we find peace within ourselves. Honesty and sincerity and the avoidance of blindness to the superficiality of conformity is the answer to this happiness. The values and ideals we have formed during our years at the L C. I. are the wings we will need in life. Dare to use them to find new horizons. To all Graduates, may there be peace, prosperity, and happiness. We have the roots—we have the wings. As Shakespeare once said, "Our doubts are traitors, And make us lose the good we oft might win By fearing to attempt." It has been a very satisfying season for Ram's Volleyball, for they have achieved many victories and gained invaluable experience. Having four wins and four losses, they've shown their true colors ot success in many competitions, including the zone finals in which they placed first. Mr. Shackleford would like to thank the team and every one who helped out in league or in tournament play. The upcoming decade will provide a fresh start for the Rams, and all wish them the best of luck in repeating their triumphs of this year in prospective seasons to come. 68 Back row: Steve Wilson. The team had an overall record of eight wins and zero losses. This impressive achievement was compounded upon by Jenny Webking, Sharon May and Lori Chaki being chosen as All Star Players. Judging from the performances of the Clipper's rookies, L.C.I. has a bright future in games to come. 69 kJr. Varsity It was a great year tor the LCl football rookies. All of the guys displayed a tremendous amount of skill and talent. In spite of poorly attended games, the junior varsity team successfully managed second place in their league. Their defensive and offensive backs combined together to make an exciting game that everyone should have seen. Gratitude goes to the team and their coaches for their dedication this past year. LCl also wishes them all the very best in the 1980 season! Front row: Al Stewart. Kevin Davis. Bruce Humpreys. Center row: Les Tanne. Rob Mitchell. Kevin Hiraga. Grant Brown. Danny Peters. Rams enjoyed and extremely successful football season. Alter starting with a 1-2 record after the first three games, the team in the end came up with a 4-3 league record. The improvement was a direct result of the dedication and hard work of the Coaches Brack and Kempt and all players concerned. After defeating Crescent Heights in the semi-finals, the Rams gave Churchill all they could handle in the league championship game before falling short 20-7. The coaches are extremely proud of the 1979 version of the L.C.I. Rams - their willingness to work hard, their dedication to the team and each other, their belief in tho system and the pride they developed for them solves and their team. The team would like to thank the school stall, the students and all those who supported us through the season. 72 As the years go on and we get older, we become more aware of what is important to us and what is not. Each of us has goals to achieve and careers to seek. Being choosen for Miss LCI Ram has been a real privilege. From this I have learned what responsibility is and I have learned more about people and friends. With veteran guards Don Webb and Todd Nelson controlling the back court, the Rams went 14-0 in league play with some close games. The Rams won the Pre-Season tournament this year in Magrath, captured 2nd in their own tournament, 2nd in the Cardston Tournament and 3rd in the Raymond Tournament. LCI also placed 2nd in the prestigious St. Francis Tournament in Calgary. In the zone play-off championship game, LCI lost a heartbreaking 46-45 to St. Mary's, but was the second representative from the South In the Provincials held at the Sportsplex March 21 and 22. In the provincial championship game, LCI lost 55-45 to Sir Winston Churchill of Calgary. All in all, the Rams had a very good year. Mr. Shackleford would like to thank the team for giving him a great year, his first as head coach, and is looking forward to next year for even greater things to come from the 1980-81 Rams. Back Row. Finally, after years of anticipation, the Class of '80 is in a situation to reminisce. It's funny how we don't fuliy appreciate what we have at high school until we approach graduation. A famous cliche? True — but time and time again all too many realize, regretfully, that the hour is late and that many opportunities have passed them by. forever! Hopefully, those who remain at L.C.I. will take advantage of those opportunities that suit their interests before the chance has vanished. As graduands, or graduands to be, let us never forget that life itself is participation, activity, and involvement. One of the problems we have all faced at one time or another is to come to grips with that special quality — “School Spirit”. It troubles me that it is sometimes viewed in the superficial context of a blind allegiance to the school. It was not until grade twelve that I realized that "School Spirit" is much more inclusive; it takes into account not only allegiance, but also morale, the quality of comradery, of struggles endured together and of good times shared. Of course, we fondly remember the special events: Frosh Week, Punk Rock Day, Greaser Day, Hat Day, the school dances, the sports events, the band concerts — and the rowdy pep rallies. But these merely represent the tip of an ice-berg of high school memories. Each of us remembers our own activities, our friendships, our individual struggles, and our successes. It is these recollections that give our high school memories full substance, and our future enterprises a good footing. I would like to share with everyone a favorite quotation of mine: "Those with the courage to act, fine their horizons unlimited". Have that courage to act! Have confidence in all your endeavors; and whatever you choose to do, do it well. Whatever you may become, never forget to be yourself! May your dreams and ambitions lead you to happiness. This year the badminton club has enjoyed a success perhaps even greater than in previous year. This success is due in part to the arrival o! many newcomers who joined the ranks of the regular members. Mrs. Layton and Mr. Winter supervised the sessions and enjoyed playing as well as helping out as coaches. In the future, it is hoped that tournaments will be arranged as some of the members have entered badminton clinics and have become quite proficient. However, as of yet, none have been organized. We hope that the success of the club will continue and look forward to an even brighter future.Ski Club &3ck Raw L-R: Hike Fournier, Kelly Tillotson, Paul Loach. Joyce Milsc-n. PrimeTime is a nine member Jazz Group composed up of the best possible players for each instrument. This policy was adopted so that we might be able to go beyond the average level of so many other bands, and begin expressing ourselves. In the latter part of the1978-'79 school year, this goal wasachieved. This success almost madeourotheraccomplishments easy; that is. winning the regional and national combo class in the Canadian Stage Band Festival and receiving recognition from the Alberta Government. At the initial formation of the group, our goal was, and still is, to make music and have fun doing it. As we look forward to the 1980 National Festival, it is hoped that we can keep in mind our initial goal and not judge ourselves by our standing in the festival. Steven EricksonWaterpolo Back Row. I 2C Well this is it, a new Spotlite for the eighties. A book full of changes that will try to enhance the memories captured by the camera. A bigger size and more pages to capture even more of those precious memories. Four more pages of color and a change in publishing company were also among major changes made. Along with the production of a yearbook comes all its difficulties. The main one was getting students and staff to take five or ten minutes out of their time to get their pictures taken. As a result, over 200 students are not in this year's yearbook because they could not be bothered to have a mugshot taken. The photographer ended up making six or seven trips to the school, and the yearbook staff missing a couple of their deadlines. I must also now take the time to apologize for having to interupt classes to have group shots taken and retaken. Unfortunately, this could not be helped for it was the only time we could seem to get people to come out for pictures. I would now like say with all its ups and downs I enjoyed being editor for the past year and to thank the following people. First of all, my entire staff for their support and for working so diligently In trying to meet deadlines. Mr. Johnston our photographer and advisor for putting up with all our nagging throughout the year. Mr. Shields, for all his help in the choosing of a theme; and last of all, all other persons who helped in any Gary Stetar way with the production of this book.
