Description
Summary:The annual publication of the students of Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, Lethbridge, Alberta.(1989-90) What's so great about LCI ’90 anyway? Quite a bit actually. The 1989-1990 school year will be remembered by both staff, students and the community as a unique and outstanding year. Our dedicated staff has spent the year preparing young minds for the real world. We, the students, would like to thank all of the staff, who are still standing, for what they’ve put up with over the last year. This year’s grade 10’s added to the usual mayhem of LCI as they adjusted to high school life. Even though they started out a bit shy and timid, they showed their spirit and finished off the year with a BANG! The grade ll’s continued the tradition they set last year by being one of the loudest groups in the school. They were on our teams, in our clubs and in our stands showing their spirit at many school events. Finally, there were the grade 12’s, who, when not slaving over a hot set of books, were busy running the school, impressing the community with accomplishments in all areas, and looking forward to June when they would say goodbye to LCI and go out in the world to seek their fortunes. In this book you will be reminded of the people and events that shaped the character of LCI in 1990. This book is dedicated to the mark we've left on ourselves, on the school and on the community we live in.Grade 12’s • Page 17 Why is the year all students love? This is a year that the grade 12's are allowed to act silly, bossy and obnoxious and get away with it. This is a year filled with some serious partying and some serious studying. The grade 12 year is the year you leave your mark in the academic record books and go on to bigger and better things. For the grade 10's, it is a year they feel they will never reach. For the grade ll's, it is just around the corner. But nothing compares to the thrill of being on top. The dreams and the future are still ours for the taking, but we've lelt behind a trail of memories; memories of friends, sports, studies, weekends, good times, bad times, and finally, memories of graduation which will always be a reminder of the high school life we loved so much. Clubs and Activities - Page 33 Clubs and activities arc such an important part of high school life. They provide a way for students to get involved, to meet new people and to discover hidden talents. In many cases they are the beginning of life long interests and hobbies. There is something for everything at LCI. whether it is weightlifting, chess or seeing the world. All these activities help give LCI the reputation for participation and excellence it so richly deserves. Grade ll’s - Page 49 Well, what can we say about the grade ll's? They are one year veterans at LCI. They've been through everything the grade 10's have, and more. They realize that they've almost reached the top. The grade ll's have contributed a lot to LCI and arc preparing to contribute more. They follow in the footsteps of the grads, learning all the ins and outs of high school life. Having fun is the thought for the year, but they all know that hard work is just around the corner. 2 Fine Arts - Page 65 Foreign languages, music, drama and art all make up the Fine Arts Department at LCI. Each area gives students the opportunity to express themselves in a way they might find difficult were it not for the school setting. Sensational concerts, award winning choirs at the national level, and drama productions enjoyed by one and all are just a few of the many endeavors of the Fine Arts Department. But considering the talent amongst the staff of this department, it’s not hard to imagine such fine shows being produced. Grade 10's - Page 81 When grade 10's first come to LCI it seems like a huge new world waiting for them. They are scared, but excited. They are the new kids on the block. They get trampled on. lost, teased and pushed around. They have to go through initiation at pep rallies and prove themselves. Finally, after all this. I think we can say the grade 10’s have found their place at LCI. They discover that they are the roots of the school. Eventually the school will be theirs for the taking. The grade 10’s will become the future for LCI and the role models for grade 10's yet to come. Intramurals - Page 91 This year a tremendous effort has been put into making our intramural program the best it can be. Intramurals is a great way to meet people, stay fit and have a great time at noon hour. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat all happen at noon hour. But whether you win or lose, the emphasis is always on fun. By participating in intramurals you learn how to play a wide variety of sports and have fun at the same time. That's what intramurals is all about. Sports - Page 99 Perhaps the most obvious legacy that LCI has been noted for in recent years is our athletics program. In football, the Rams have struck fear into the hearts of all opposition and continues to dominate in the province. Our basketball teams are also recognized among the powers that be in Southern Alberta. Some would say that LCI is just a football school, but you only have to look as far as cur volleyball team to put that notion to rest. In addition, our wrestlers have pinned their opponents more than once this year and have the medals to prove it. Finally we have our rugby team, cross country team and baseball team which all help to establish LCI as a dominant force in the province. Staff - Page 115 Unique people combined for cne job. but each with a different style and personality. From core subjects to options, administration to coaches and everyone in between, the variety adds to the individuality of our school and we. the students. The 130 quizzes and the 1000 word essays all due the next day help prepare us for the future, though it’s hard to really understand how. No matter how much we say we hate them and how much we wish they would retire, in the end we really appreciate them mere than they'll know. They've helped us through thick and thin, wins and losses, right and wrong and for that we'll never forget them.“THE SPIRIT OF LCI” The Legend of LCI - Maxine Pennock LCI was started quite a while ago, No one knew we’d be this great so we began nice and slow. At first we had our losses, and victories were tough. But once the winning started, no victory was enough. First we became famous for our fighting Rams! Everyone asked. “How’d they win”? We said. “We got great fans!” And then came the basketball, and we’re great at that too! But the trophies would be somewhere else, if it wasn't for all of you! Our colors became famous . . . green and gold all the way! No obstacle was too big to our opponents sad dismay. So, thanks go to everyone for everything you’ve done, but the best thing about it all . . . we had loads of fun! With all our school spirit LCI will never go wrong, For our pride will always shine through when we sing our anthem song. The school has gone through changes, just like you and me. Inside you can feel the difference but outside you can see. You can see we all gave something to our dear LCI. And even after we all leave, the spirit will never die! May the Legend last FOREVER!!STAFF SPIRITPEP RALLIES Nothing livens up a dull school day like a pep rally. What is it that makes these get togethers so fun? Maybe it's the teachers making fools of themselves for our enjoyment. Maybe it's Sam and Samantha the Rams running around with the spirit stick getting everyone to yell “Go Big Rams!" or maybe it’s watching the cheerleaders trying to get a competition of “We’ve got spirit, yes we do” going and sometimes being told to shut up and sit down. Whatever it is, it helps make our spirit level and energy level soar for the rest of the day. 8 GO BIG RAMS!!! 9 FRIENDS Friends give us the most precious gifts of all. Their tears, love, patience, and laughter are always there to strengthen our courage and confidence in life and ourselves. They never underestimate your abilities; only continue to encourage and support our dreams. Everything seems to consume your life for a certain period of time and then fade away and become a memory in the past, but a friend is one thing that will last forever. Friendship means someone to share hopes, dreams, and sorrows with; someone to laugh with and share what seems to be a never-ending school year. Although we may lose touch with some of our friends after we graduate, the memories of the happy times v/e had are never forgotten. "Gee Josh, does your pen taste as good as mine does?' says Jodi Lajra-Lynne does her Dclph lundgren impression while Barb laughs Don't cry Scott, you'll see Tan agarn!MORE FRIENDSFrom cne extreme to another cn 3 Monday morning! LCl's funky foreigners of the year! The three stooges live it up! 13 This has been a year full of wild and crazy fashions. Fashion for this year has been a way of showing individuality and expressing yourself. We’ve seen classy, casual and outrageous outfits at LCI. The major fashions this year were of course the ever famous Club Monaco, Hugo Boss, Beaver Canoe and Benetton sweatshirts. In the jeans category, you just couldn’t be without your 501 ’s and Bugle Boys. In the winter time you just couldn’t stay cool without your Elho jacket and your Oakley glasses. The colors this year were equally outrageous with every flourescent under the sun, black and white, purple and even tye-dye. Of course we can't forget the leather jackets and skirts we wore this year. Some other names include Esprit, Chip and Pepper, Zulu. Hobie, Body Glove, and O’Neil Surf. This was a year of fashion trends that will not be forgotten. ftaig mmm 15 MOVIES Movies are perhaps the one thing we all have in common. No matter what kind of people you hang out with, or what your interests are, you can probably sit in a class and talk to someone about a movie you’ve seen. This year we laughed at "Who’s Talking”, screamed through “Shocker" and cried through "Dead Poet’s Society". Movies are genuinely cool! MUSIC We may have varying tastes, but we all listen to it. Music is a major aspect of life, especially in high school. What other time in your life are you so up to date on what’s going on in the music world. Some of the biggies for 1989-1990 were Janet Jackson, Erasure, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Bobby Brown, BROS. N.W.A. and many others. 16 . - ■^TJTiTZxrxi^r" ■pT¥T'T¥f • pJ -p *-t— t’^ — r* | ^ r*' • r-1 •-•• - -r N ✓ — ^ — • — * • — •• f »—p ■ • i • J^2C^„ri_irEpC^N.j -r J., /t|,^x Y^J r--?1?- •• A1 ~T~'V ''-r*■ r-vV^ : 1 ] * ' 1 i 4 ■: L -L I --- r-rLrJ--TA i *' t W 1 I 1 ' ✓ ,1.- ! — 1 St. L-tfj I wrf^^5=?v J-pi., i—‘r~jr*-T—i J». High school activities and clubs such as athletics and music have helped to mold our individuality and personalities, and will be nostalgically treasured as memories forever; but we’re on to bigger and better things. If you think that these years before graduation were great, just wait for what comes next! In the century falls onto our calenders, we will have found new directions for our lives and discovered our true destinies. Until now, we have experienced a wide variety of accomplishments and failures; although none like that of graduation are common emotions among graduates. We may be happy to be rid of the awkward years of growing up: dealing with parents, the toils of school, and the unknown. We may be sad about leaving the things we have come to love: good friendships, and few responsibilities. We may also be apprehensive about what the future may hold: What do we do with our lives? How do we do it? What will our lives be like by the year 2000? By experiencing these emotions, we’ll learn a new lesson and grow even further. New experiences are just waiting to happen! Until now, most of our choices and decisions have been made for us. Now we must make these choices for ourselves and set up new goals. Once we have these goals, we've got to muster the will and self- determination to work towards their acheivment. The goals which we attain may be universally significant and affect the whole world. We may find ourselves creating masterpieces, solving environmental problems, or even becoming the next Trump or Einstein. On the other hand, we may also accomplish goals which are significant only to ourselves. We may find ourselves kicking bad habits, mastering the ropes of a new career, or even doing the best we can at little things such as changing a tire. The possibilities are endless, and are totally up to us! Whatever our decisions are, I'm sure they'll be a success: as we at L.C.I. have always excelled in academics, athletics, arts, and other clubs and activities. Our graduating class has a very special place in history: we have the proud distinction of celebrating our 10th anniversary at the beginning of a new century, a new millenium, and a new era: the year 2000. At that time, we will be able to see ourselves with many of ourselves with many of our present goals accomplished and reminisce about how great our LCI days have been! Even though we may go our separate ways, we will always hold each other close, cherishing our memories of our years at LCI. It’s time to relax and enjoy ourselves. For the class of 1990, these are our last moments together. Treasure the good times and learn from the bad. To those who are left to face more years at L.C.I., hold your heads high, maintain your L.C.I. pride, and make the years you have left the best you ever dreamed possible! As a famous person once sang, ’’You gotta run on instinct and go by feel.” We grads are on our own to face the realities of life. Reach for the top, believe in yourselves, and always, always hold on to your dreams. Best of luck to all in your quest for success. President, Christine Williams Well dudes it’s finally over. Another great year for L.C.I. has come to pass, only this year I graduated (I hope). As Mr. L.C.I. Ram I had the opportunity to experience conferences with world leaders, golf with Bush, go on a date with the queen, and fill a spot on student's council. A first in the history of our school. To the 10's. wake up next year and get involved! Make your YEARS here at L.C.I. memorable. Catch the spirit! ll's, you’ve got 1 more year to go, make it count, and keep the tradition of dominance in our awesome school. To my fellow graduates, baby we are free now! As we venture out in the world we must all try and leave our mark as alumni of L.C.I. and most importantly, get out of Lethbridge. Stay cool and never forget the Red. Always, Jason Gough Mr. L.C.I. P.S. Teams, crush the Comets on Channes Zero!! 34 This year has finally come to an end, and my term as Miss L.C.I. Ram is over. The student population of L.C.I. has made this year the best and the most memorable to me. I enjoyed serving on student’s council and also attending the many sporting functions as a fan and as a participant. A final note to the grads: Follow your dreams and goals to the fullest. Each spring we elect our peers to various position on student council. This year we had some pretty heavy expectations for council to meet and they didn’t let us down. Their often heated debates produced not only a group of students who could have stepped in and ruled the world if they had to. but a lot of fun activities as well. So. if you know someone on student council, go give them a pat on the back, they did a great job and I’m sure it wasn't easy.GRAD DIRECTORATE Left to Right: Sheri Tamwa. Cheryle Worg. Regardless of what a yearbook should be, this year’s staff made a valiant effort to provide you, the reader, with an innovative, enjoyable book. The yearbook you are now reading was put together by a small, dedicated group of extremely cool individuals. Brainstorming, and all other insanely creative activities that led to the book’s production took place in a small upstairs room by the place where Mr. Baker sells popcorn. Most of the work was done to the music of Depeche Mode. U2, The Smiths, Erasure, and many more. We had a lot of fun putting the book together, hopefully, you’ll enjoy reading it. After all, the school year was as fun as the law allowed it to be, and we all know how much fun reading is, so by my logic, the yearbook ought to be a riot. Good luck in life and all that . . . FRENCH IMMERSION Canada is a bilingual country, but how many of us can really speak french? I'm sure that right now that number is quite small, but the french immersion program at L.C.I. is an opportunity for us to learn how. While most of us took french in grades 4 through 6, many of us quit after that. A few of us went through junior high french, and many have continued on in french 10, lOn etc. Even a smaller group yet have participated in the french immersion program. It’s relatively new program, so not a lot of students know about it, hopefully, that number will increase with time and more students will take advantage of the unique learning opportunity afforded to us through the french immersion program. 42 43 44 45 46 fllperta /chool/ Athletic fl//ociation TIER football CHAMPIONS fQOA 47 mnn^; i I - - r- v 1 1 u mftj&fta HKH H tftjffir witrtj-iR -. Now, sadly, we leave behind the high school life that we’ve learned to cope with over the past three years and go out into the world to seek our fortunes. So with minds brimming with knowledge, we wave goodbye to old friends and get ready to make some money. So what now? Some of us will get jobs, some will go off to college or university, some of us will travel, and some of us will return once again to L.C.I., glorified in the rank of a Super Senior. Wherever we end up. and whatever we are doing, I'm sure that we'll do well, after all, we are from L.C.I.! As you ran around the halls on the last day before exams, getting people to sign your yearbook, did it even cross your mind that you might never see them again? That someday your children might be friends? That someday you might be their boss? I could go on and on, but I’ll let you do that for yourself. Always remember that as far as the L.C.I. class of 1990 is spread out on the face of this and neighboring planets, we will always have these years together, and we'll always be friends. Chns Ford. Jenny Leavitt. Amy Olsen Emily Campbell The 1989-1990 school year at L.C.I. saw the Intramural Program transformed from an occasional lunch hour distraction to a daily competition involving a large percentage of the student body. Intramurals provide an alternative to sitting in the cafeteria and trying to resist the urge to put your feet on the table. By participation, students earned points. When a person's total points reached 100, that person was the proud owner of a pretty groovy t-shirt. Activities can’t all be for individuals, after all, the Human being is a social creature. To satisify the need to be social, Intramurals also staged many team events. We all got used to hearing who was playing who on any given day. These teams clashed in team handball, soccer, and broomball, to name a few. Many of us watched and cheered, even more of us didn't, but regardless of the number of people in the stands the action was always intense. The intramural program would never have gotten off of the ground without the planning and organizing of the intramural council and a few dedicated staff members. I think they all deserve a pat on the back, they did an excellent job. 92 ■ . iThe world is a very different | place than it was when we starjj school in September 198gcPormeI duration of the school yea^we saw city council fumble around with the | Sunday shopping issue, in Decell er, the Amajficans invaded Panaj during ‘‘Operation Just Caj| and ousted Manuel Noriega,-a drug runnjpg thug who ran the country lasfflnctator■J’rime Minister Brian rcney and all the provinc Bmiers have argued over feech Lake Accord, and in icre have been rumbl reparations if the Constit Accord goes through, lis year was any ftmf word. Rams did a thorough job of upholding the tradition of excellence set by the Rams of previous years. They finished the year with an exhibition record of 6 wins and 6 losses and a league record of 11 wins and 7 losses. At the zone playoffs in the sportsplex they showed all of Southern Alberta that the Rams can hold their own and then some against anyone. Action at the sportsplex concluded with a humiliating, but peaceful loss to L.C.I. by the Raymond Comets. By winning the South zone playoffs, the Rams advanced to the Provincials in Edmonton. Even though they didn’t make the finals, the Rams played an impressive 4th place overall, once again beating the Raymond Comets for Consolation Trophy. The team has always been strong, and this year’s squad was definitely no exception. As the rugby rams get more exposure, we're sure that support will grow. Keep an eye on these guy’s, they're hot, and they truly represent L.C.I. spirit whenever they are in action. Shack’s pack is stack!! 107 WRESTLING Back: Ryan Mckay. Jonn Stiffarn, Mathew Pisko. It was all kicked off with an opening ceremony followed by three days of superb wrestling. At the end of competition in each weight class the victors were presented with their medals. L.C.I. placed an impressive 5th place overall, our best showing yet. Coach Donaldson and all the athletes did a superb job in organizing the tournament and deserve a real pat on the back!!! 109Back: Coach Umciis, Gerry Stewart. Bryan Eklund. Bruce Stewart. Neil Wood. Rather, the original Lethbridge Collegiate Institute was housed in what is now the Hamilton Junior High School. Later, in the fall of 1950, the present L.C.I. opened its doors. Since that time nearly forty years ago thousands of high school students have passed through the school, most graduating and going on to successful, productive lives. The history of the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute over the sixty-plus years of its existence has been a rich chronicle of academics, athletic accomplishments, artistic and creative endeavors, social activities and service to the school and community. In addition to the obvious examples of student achievement in these areas, such as countless scholarships, honors and awards, a review of the six decades of L.C.I. history highlights the common thread which best illustrates what the school has provided to students and, ultimately, the community over the years: excellent educational opportunities for the high school students of Lethbridge. Many students have seized those opportunities in order to make the most of their high school experiences. In looking through our collection of yearbooks - we have the 1928 one, as well as every year since 1946 -- one can follow the activities and accomplishments of L.C.I. students through the years. From the pictures of the graduates to the writeups on the teams and clubs, the class pictures, literary works, photos of student activities, messages from student council presidents, yearbook editors and (yes, even) principals, there are all kinds of memories depicted and impressions recorded. Literally hundreds and hundreds of individuals and groups have left their marks in the history of the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. Such impressions or marks have contributed to the rich sense of heritage of the L.C.I. and will continue to do so long into the future. Every student from the past has left some sort of mark, some smaller or larger than others, but all important nonetheless. Each of you, too, will be leaving something of yourself behind when you leave the L.C.I. You may feel that your impact on the school has been negligible and, thus, that your ‘mark’ will be a small one compared to many others . but, nevertheless, it will be here after you have gone. Some time in the future you will attend a reunion, visit the school, run into one of your teachers, or browse through a yearbook, reviving some memories of your high school years here at the L.C.I. and relocating your mark. I hope that your memories will be pleasant
