Right, Mr. Walters? men are■im STAFFPRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE It is always a challenge to try to focus my message upon the theme of the yearbook. Each year I make an attempt to relate the theme, which is often symbolic and image-laden, to the real-life experiences of students, so that it might cause those who read it (all students?) to look back upon their high school years and perhaps gain some new insights about their many experiences while here. Thinking about this year's message, WALKING THROUGH THE YEARS, has offered no less a challenge for me. Actually, the different ways in which people walk provide an interesting view of the theme. In the academic sense there are many different kinds of "walkers": many who move quickly through their courses with good marks and few difficulties; some who move methodically from year to year and course to course with solid, but not spectacular results; a few who tend to plod along, encountering difficulties, frustration and, at times, failure; and "the skippers" (need I say more), to name but a few. In any event the progress of our many students through school varies much in the same way as we might observe in watching people on the street walking along in their many different styles and paces. The nature of the terrain over which people walk also can equate to school. For some, it is all an up-hill struggle; for others a pleasant downward stroll. Some students encounter roadblock after roadblock which must be overcome or they risk being stopped or detoured. Once again, a few get stuck in the bog and perhaps never get out back on the pathway. Your various journeys through your high school years have illustrated all of these topographies and how you have dealt with them is reflected in where you are today and where you will go from here. If there is a wish which I have for all of you related to our yearbook theme, it is this: I would iike youi footsteps to be forward ones, ovei enough level ground so that progress is steady, but with enough hills anc obstacles to provide the challenge ir life which is necessary for us all. would like you to have the opportunity to run quickly at times, bu also find the time to stroll slowly, en joying all that you encounter. And ir all of this, I want each of you to have someone to walk with, so that youi footsteps are not lonely ones - foi only through family and friends car one's life be truly rewarding anc successful. Best wishes, and keep on VVALKINC THROUGH THE YEARS ahead! 18 i; ADMINISTRATION & OFFICE STAFF Mr. M. Forster (principal) Mr. R. Alnscough (asst, principal) Mr. D. Firth (asst, principal) Mr. A. It has been a year filled with laughter and pain, good times and bad. It has been said that our high school years are the most important ones. These are to be the years we establish the grounds for our future. I believe in this, as I believe that each and every one of LC.I.'s students can become exactly what they want. I remember reading a quote that said, "I believe in fate and destination, but so much of that lies in our own hands. If you know what you want, just go out and get it!” This is something I will remember forever, and I hope you do to. Before I finish, I would like to say a few words about "individualism” . Be yourself, do what you want to do and don't ever change for anyone or anything! And always remember your L.C.I. pride! Troy HawesMR. & MISS LCI RAM Dear L.C.I., As Miss L.C.I. Ram I was privileged enough to be on Students' Council and lend a hand in any way possible. I enjoyed the many activities from football games to drama productions. I am glad that I had this opportunity to make L.C.I. the best it could possibly be, and in years to come, know that L.C.I. will still be number one! Thank you for your support and friendship. Best wishes Michelle Wilson Dear L.C.I. Well, what can I say, but what a great year this has been at L.C.I. Like anything else, there were good experiences and bad. Lor me, being on the football team that won the provincial title has to be the highlight of my year. But there will be many other memories also, especially of all my friends and acquaintances here at L.C.I. I have really enjoyed my three years at L.C.I. and I will really miss everyone a lot. The modern equipment and facilities matches the modern way of thinking, learning and teaching. I was a little confused at first by the large number of courses which you can choose from, but with the help of a councellor and my exchange partner I managed to straighten everything out. I was very warmly welcomed and got all the help I sometimes needed. I followed through the program of my classes and was very interested in them. I met a lot of students who were interested in me and who told me a lot of things about Canada I didn't know. Their help and friendliness made my time at LCI an experience that I will never forget. I want to thank everyone for their smiles and their understanding. Be proud of yourselves and your school. Klaus 44 i; jGRADE 10THE FIRST STEP Grade 10! What a year! Aside from all the confusion of being new to a large high school, the grade 10 students adapt very quickly. High school is really exciting in the grade 10 year! Look at Raquel for instance. You can see the excitement and anticipation in her eyes. A great year lies ahead! And now that it is over, one thing is for sure; IT SURE WENT FAST!!! Back in grade one, we all took that first step when our parents bundled us up and drove us to the school for the first time. That first step, the first day of school, was a mix of terror and wonder, of confusion and freedom, of vulnerability and safety. Today, we are a thousand miles down the road. Ever since the first grade, our steps have been leading us to this point, to graduation. After twelve years of sometimes wild, sometimes heartbreaking school, the end is in sight. Looking back at those twelve years, we sometimes find it hard to believe we've travelled so far. In elementary, we were still learning how to read and write. We got lost in the hallway and went home during recess by accident. Then junior high came along, and suddenly we were testing the waters of teenagehood. Just three short years later arrived high schooll For many of us, high school was the ultimate achievement. It was both tough and rewarding. Here we made lasting friends, learned skills, had fun, made our own decisions, won our own victories. Here we also struggled for grades, suffered through sleepless nights, failed where we tried so hard to succeed. But we were near the end of our journey, and we were on top of the world. Now, at long last, we are graduating. And the journey is over. There is a feeling of satisfaction in that, but also emptiness. After all, we have been working for twelve years to reach this point, and now it's here. It's a sudden shock to discover that the road is gone, the journey ended. The first step is a thousand miles behind us. So now what? Now, we take a second step. Before us lies the future. We feel a mixture of terror and wonder, confusion and freedom, vulnerability and safety. Ahead of 6s there may be university, a job, travel, good times, hard times - who can say? Graduation is a time of change. We suddenly find that what we thought was the end of one journey is actually the beginning of another. Another journey that will have comforts and struggles, successes and failures just as great or greater than our first journey. The challenge facing us at graduation is to take that second step forward. There are many other steps we could take. We could step down, step around or sidestep. We could step out of the picture or fall out of step or get knocked back at step. But the most rewarding, though perhaps the hardest, is to step up and step onward. That is the challenge of graduation. How you answer that challenge will determine what your journey, your life, will like. That first step was a doozy. The second will be what you make it. Sean was a kind and gentle person with a love t'or art, music and animals. Although he started life as a shy and sensitive child, he developed into a creative and self-assured young man, due in part to the help of his many friends. He was loyal in his friendships and his home was enriched by those same friends. His load at times was a heavy one because of his role in the family, but he never shirked his responsibilities and met every challenge with hope and determination. Sean tried to do his best in every endeavor and often seemed surprised when he succeeded, but those who knew him were not surprised. In the sixteen years that Sean lived, his life touched many others and a part of him will always be with his many, many friends and his loving family. J l >) 115 STUDENTS SAVING STUDENTS SAFE GRAD COMMITTEE '89 It's the end of 12 years of school. There's going to be a party. Will it be safe? Students, together with parents, the police and other community groups work towards making their graduation party safe. SAFE GRAD provides alternatives to a situation that would go ahead with or without community support. Eliminating 100% of vehicles belonging to those who attend the party, SAFE GRAD protects the students against the operation of a vehicle by an overtired or impaired driver. Just because it is the end of twelve years of schooling, it doesn't have to be dangerous. Let's have a party so that when it is over everyone who attended will have happy memories that aren't tainted by tragedy.-nsr ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 0 0AWARDS I. She is spending this school year in Lethbridge, hosted by the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. Staying in Canada for eleven months, as a visitor from China, I'm really fascinated by Canada's unique culture. All I have seen and experienced has made a lasting impression on me. Canada is a very unique country. I'm impressed by its rich and colorful multicultural heritage, its cold and bizarre weather, its comparitively large spaces and sparse population, and its high standard of living. I was also surprised to find out that Canadian people are so nice and warm-hearted, even though Canada's political system is capitalistic. Before I came to Canada, I thought that people from capitalistic countries would be cold and selfish. The most intensive impression is that of freedom; I really like and somewhat envy Canadians' freedom. Every Canadian family is so different; they have different life styles just because in Canada everyone has the freedom to pursue his own individual life style. He can pursue his own religious belief, his own intellectual structure, his own favorite political party and his individual way of dressing, for example. Canadians don't have to worry about what they can or can't say. Canadian people are very outspoken; they can express what they want about government and political parties. Canadians strive for individual freedom. Canadian children are really tough and independent, compared to our spoiled Chinese children. And Canadians are crazy about hockey and skiing. They are very' active. There are many more ways or manners about Canada and Canadians that I like; very interestingly, I found all of them are related to Canadian freedom. 120 J EXCHANGE STUDENTS MARIO LOZANO PATRICK WEBER URSULA YEE MARIELLE BARKER Hi! We are the exchange students. We came to Canada with our tunny accents to be made fun of and to experience the Canadian culture. Arriving in Canada, we found the icy cold weather a novelty. Patrick finds the Canadian "crunchy" peanut butter really good, Marielle enjoys the ski slopes, Mario likes Taco Time and Ursula enjoys explaining what "Vegemite" is. We know that when we leave Canada to go back to our "wooden shoes", our kangaroos, schnitzel and chili, we will take back with us many memories and remember wonderful things about the friendly Canadians. Many thanks to all the staff ana students of L.C.I. for helping us settle in and making us feel welcome.
