I.C1 has provided for all of us a place to develop our individuality; and with so many opportunities offered to us, we have all emerged as unique people. We came, as a class, to a school rich in tradition, and were challenged by the standards left behind by previous classes. These challenges helped us take from the school the most it could offer. We hope our class has given, in return, by maintaining the tradition, and establishing new challenges. We entered LCl expecting to be ‘molded’ as we were in lower grades. We were overwhelmed, at first, by the challenges and choices offered to us. We soon narrowed our choices, chose a goal, and went out to meet the challenges. Our goals have been as diversified and unique as we are. Some of us decided to become proficient at sports; some at music; some at the arts. Some of us aimed at high academic achievement, while others of us used these years as practical training for the working world. Along the way, we have had successes, we have made friends of students and teachers, and we have grow n by striving for our goals. We came as a class, but we leave as unique individuals. The only common characteristic we all share, is that we have met our one common goal -- graduation. Our school spirit definitely picked up and 1 hope it will be even better next year. I’m sure this year has been full of many special moments for all of us which we will remember always. My only advice is to make the most of your time at LCI because it passes all too quickly. Congratulations to all the grads and good luck to everyone in the future! Due to some unfortunate injuries our boys did not do as well as they had hoped. The highlights of the Ram’s season were our city league win over Winston Churchill Bulldogs, and some superior efforts by our seniors. The LCI Rams look forward to the ’83 season with the return of such exceptional veterans as: Shawn Wiegelt, Dave Fletcher, Kim Chen, Glen Oliver, Mike Gerencer, Trevor Gom, Chad Tictsing, Dave Downs and Greg Bowen. 67 Clipper Queen Volleyball You Were Fantastic!! The Clipper Queen volleyball squad experienced another fine season full of a lot of hard work, patience and smiles. Clippers were successful in completing the South West conference with a 5 - 5 record placing second in the standings overall. Clippers fought hard through Pre-Season, Red Deer invitationals, and Post Season tournaments meeting their matches in the Semifinal playoffs. Team spirit and high moral brought the team to place third in Regional playoff standings with an intense team effort and peak performance in their final meeting with W.C.H.S. We regretfully say farewell to our two captains and fine athletes Melissa Kotkas and Lorinda Holmes. League all star Sophie Hicken, power hitters and big blockers Sabina Seitz and Chris Peters will also be leaving us. And yes, (SNIFF), our small yet gigantic leader, Bonnie Hinatsu will too. We do look forward however to a very promising season in 1983, with 6 rcturnies and 6 new and eager faces. Congrads on a job well done. The LCI Clipper Queens once again proved their vigor and strength of spirit as one of the finest Girls Basketball teams in the province. As is their annual tradition, the Clippers participated in the 4A Girl’s Provincial Playoffs, where they won the consolation trophy after losing their opening game to the eventual champions, St. Mary’s Calgary Saints. The Clippers also won the prestigious Winston Churchill - Catholic Central Tournaments in Medicine Hat and our own Girls Invitational Tournament. They won the Raymond Sugar Bowl this year and the prestigious St. Francis Invitational in Calgary. The Rams placed third at the Cardston Tournament and third in their own LC1 tournament. They lost a heart-breaking 62-61 game to CCHS for third place at the Zone Play-offs and were eliminated from Provincial competition. Mr. Shackleford would like to thank the players for their efforts this year and all the students for their great support all year long. Thanks also to the cheerleaders for their hard work and effort. 75 LCI Curling Club Girls Triumph Again! The LCI boys team tried their hardest and gave it their best but got knocked out at the zone. Unfortunately, the mixed team had the same problem. Fortunately, the girls team made up for everything. The LCI Track and Field team has this year become a full year club in conjunction with the University of Lethbridge Track and Field team and Southwind Atletika. This cooperative venture allows LCI athletes to share in the benefits of better facilities and a top caliber coaching team. As an introduction to the full year program, the LCI team took part in three major indoor track meets. They showed an improvement each time out: Bision Invitational indoor meet in Great Falls, Montana, Bozeman All- Commers meet in Bozeman, Montana, and Alberta Junior Age Class Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. Next years plans call for an increase of two more indoor meets. There was a change in staff. Mr. Clewes, our new principal, joined us at the beginning of this school year. After receiving his teaching certificate, Mr. Clewes became part of the staff at Winston Churchill High School for ten and a half years. Soon thereafter, he was the principal of Wilson Junior High School for the next two and a half years. Mr. Clewes, in his interview, stressed the fact that he was very impressed with all aspects of L.C.I. He believes L.C.I. has a strong staff, and a fine student body. Overall, Mr. Clewes feels L.C.I. has fine resources and facilities. As far as future plans for the school, Mr. Clewes would like to concentrate on a few things. He would like to see more opportunities for the gifted and talented students. He would also like to see a few more staff and students involved in co- curricular activities. He feels that a big institute such as L.C.I. tends to be impersonal and that we should always try to improve communications with students and parents. There is one final point he feels is important. He would like to see more support for the school from the people of Lethbridge. He feels that the school and its students deserve more publicity. For example, he thinks that the fine arts groups such as the band and the choir need more recognition. Mr. Clewes would like to relay some messages for the continuing students as well as the graduating students. For the graduating students: “Work hard to improve yourself by way of furthering your education or oy making the most of the opportunities of the working world. Try to give a little in return thereby making the world a better 1 place for others.” “Self improvement is important, but it is also important to look out for your fellow man/woman.” For the continuing students: “Carry on with the fine tradition of L.C.I. Apply yourself to your studies, get involved, and make the most of yourself.” 84 Administrators 85 Counsellors Mr. Mendenhall Business Education Mr. Sheen Mrs. Jcssop Mrs. Berry Mrs. Milne Mrs. Cahoon Mr. Olson 86 English Department Mr. Van Orman Mr. Walkcntin Fine Arts DepartmentHome Economics Industrial Education 88 Mathematics Mrs. Hcincn Mr. Steed Mr. Stolcarcius Modern Languages Mr. Umcris Mr. Winter Missing: Mr. Cousins Missing: Mrs. FullerPhysical Education Project 99Science Social Studies Missing: Mr. Cousins. 9 1 Special Education Teacher’s AidsMissing: Mrs. Allison. This year the student’s council has achieved all of the goals proposed at the beginning of the school year. A strong Pep Club is to be congratulated on their hard work with fulfilling the communications from the student’s council to the rest of the school. The enthusiasm displayed by council members has made the organization of school events a pleasure. Thanks to all the students for their support of the teams, their attendance at dances and especially on all the participation in the school. L.C.I. is on it’s way to sensationalism once more. BON VOYAGE! Alberta Quebec Student Exchange Quite a deal! Caroline Chretien, from Chicoutimi Quebec, visited L.C.I. from September 14 to December 18, 1982. While here, she stayed with Deanna Lawrence, an L.C.I. student. Caroline was a regular full-time student at L.C.I. for the three months she was here. Deanna, Caroline and their liason, Mrs. Haig, visited places in and around Southern Alberta and went to Banff and Jasper for a week. Deanna will be joining Caroline in Quebec for three months from February to May 1983. This is the fourth year of existence for such an exchange and L.C.I. has participated every year. The arrangements arc made through the Departments of Education, of Alberta and Quebec. The governments pay transportation costs and since the students stay with their partners, there is no real cost from the student’s point of view. These exchanges have proved very successful in the past and hopefully will continue in the future. 106 do not travel read only one page!
