STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT MAC LOGAN As this year draws to a close, it is a time to both look back and think ahead. For some of us this marks our last year at L.C.I., while for others it is only the end of the first round. Flipping through the pages of this year’s Spotlight, we can begin to appreciate some of the things we have taken for granted. We can look back at the activities and be embarrassed at how stupid we seemed but still miss them all the same. School Spirit was not as strong this year as I have seen before but it is still there, as was evident in this year’s frosh, a truly milestone event! Crowds at this years football and basketball games were larger and louder than in years gone by. Yes, the L.C.I. student still likes to have a good time, but a change must be made in what we perceive as a “good time.” If, in the future, Student’s Council can make the right changes, school activities will once again be both fun and “in.” For the class of ‘82,’ 1 hope that our days at L.C.I. have been happy ones and that what we have learned will help us succeed in the days and years ahead. 1 think that we should all set a goal to achieve, no matter what it is. Being an individual and living your own life, doing what you want to do will lead you to happiness, so to each his own. Good luck to all my fellow students and my successor. 6 STUDENT’S COUNCIL I From Row: Nancy Ferguson - Grade 10 V.P., Ingrid Hess - Activities Coordinator. Brad Hamilton - Grad Directorate. RAM ANDREA GERENCSER This year I tried to change the tradition at L.C.I. by making the position of Miss L.C.I. Ram not a beauty pageant, but a position that promotes and represents school spirit more thoroughly. This year was definitely a good one for school spirit. I would like to thank everyone who gave me their time to either participate in or support our L.C.I. teams. Thank you and good luck. Andrea Gerencser 10 REACH FOR THE TOP Back Row: Mr. Pcnncr. This year’s Reach For The Top team has enjoyed a very successful year. In October the team captured the Lethbridge and District flight, and went on to emerge as the Southern Alberta champions in December. At the time of this writing, the team is preparing for the Provincial Championships to be held in late April. The winner there will proceed to the Nationals in Winnipeg. The club members would like to express their gratitude to their dedicated coaches, Mrs. Macleod and Mr. Pcnncr, and to Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Allison for their hard work and support. The team wishes to send thanks to Lynne, Darryl, and Jeff for their most valuable contributions and encouragement. Hopefully the success of this year will serve as the spark to a fiery future for Reach For The Top. 12 LETHBRIDGE-CHARLESBOURG EXCHANGE Hack Row: Karen Buhrman, Melissa Kotkas, Karen Caldcr, Rick Smith. Drama activities in 1981-1982 cultivated some new dimensions of performance. In addition to the in-class and evening performances, the first collective creation, “The Life of the Party,” a show on alcohol and drug abuse, performed in December to full houses of junior and senior students. Roga Production filmed this production in January. The first L.C.l. dinner theatre, “Nuts, Bolts, and Carnations” was a real profit maker for the sponsoring of the travel group, Quebec exchange, and Key Club. Response to this makes it look like dinner theatre will be an annual L.C.L performance. The next documentary drama was a production of “A Hundred and Sixty Acres and a Dream” which toured southern Alberta. This story was about homesteading Alberta. Auditions for the One Act High School Festival Plays “Voices,” “What Shall We Do With the Body,” “Where is Thy Sting?” were held, and prepared for May 1 competition. Roga Productions returned to L.C.L in February in order to film, “Tomorrow,” the story of the effect of yesterday, today, and tomorrow on the fragility of human life. 33 CERAMICS CLUB Back Row: Bernadiru* Higo. Missing: Robert Carr. This year’s Collegian staff (almost identical to last year’s) not only expanded the Arts and Satire format established last year, but also paid more attention to school events in an attempt to give the paper more versatility. In my point of view, we met with success. Activities other than producing a magazine were making the Collegian room a continual fire hazard (it’s home, folks), and stopping the Yearbook staff from swiping our materials. I’d like to thank Mr. Paskuski for making sure we didn’t insult anyone, or destroy anything important, and big thank you’s to all those individuals throughout the school who supported the Collegian during the year. Amid shouts of “I'm so confused,” and barrages of Jelly- Tots from the Collegian next door, we managed to finally put out a yearbook (I hope; I’m writing this before the book is complete). Our staff was completely new and showed it, but we pulled through. We never made a deadline cither, although we did come within two weeks once. At times it was even fun, and dodging all the flying debris did keep you on your toes. I'd like to thank everyone involved, especially Mr. Stretton and Mr. Millis, and those few who were with me to the end. Wc worked hard, 1 hope you like it. As we excitedly look toward the future and all that it may bring, we also remember and cherish the memories of the past. This is an occasion of nostalgic memories. We started school twelve years ago as small children and are graduating today as young adults. These years have been steppingstones for us to have reached this culmination. We have acquired knowledge and experience. We have found friends not only among our fellow pupils but also among our teachers. Most of all we have formed our own character; a character which is uniquely ours. Wc have grown up. The sadness of this occasion is that wc will be leaving a pari of our life that is special. We may, in the future, walk down the halls, but it will not be the same. We will be visitors. We will become part of the past and others will have taken our place. Our routine of life is becoming part of the unforgettable past. We must appreciate the people in our lives who have influenced us. We have had the opportunity to learn from gifted and patient teachers. We have had the love and guidance of our families and friends. These influences were all instrumental in our development. At the same time we feel happiness, probably some relief, and a sense of satisfaction that we arc now the graduating class of 1982. Though somewhat apprehensive, we feel excitement looking towards the future. We have the ability to become whatever is in our dreams. George Bernard Shaw once said, “You see things; and say ‘why?’ But I dream things that never were, and 1 say ‘why not?”' This approach should apply to each and everyone of us. Our own aspirations should have no boundaries. But dreams do not come easily! For each goal we must be prepared to work and devote ourselves completely. Until now we have had a basic dream in common; our graduation. Now, as brances on a tree, we grow apart striving for our own individual dreams on our own individual paths. To some, graduation day may seem somewhat similar to crossing a date-line on a cruise ship; on the surface, nothing seems to have changed. Yet time moves on. For each of you the day comes when you move out from under the sheltering influence of family, school, and others. You become a person on your own, with all that this implies, in a society which places great emphasis on personal achievement and material success. It is a significant moment when you realize that, from this time on, you will make your own way, decide how to meet the challenges and emergencies that arise, and live with the consequences of those decisions. The importance of ambition, energy, and perseverencc is emphasized. However, equally significant is the realization that “no man is an island”, that we must live in almost constant interaction with our fellow beings. We come to understand that some of life’s greatest satisfactions grow out of respect and concern for, and service to, others. Thus the importance of empathy, kindness, and courtesy. One cannot be genuinely courteous without having a sincere regard for the feelings and general welfare of one’s fellow man. Thirty years have passed since I joined the staff of Lethbridge School District 51, twenty-five of those years being spent at L.C.I. Now, as 1 approach the end of my time here, there is some nostalgia but it is not an occasion of sadness. These years have been good years, in part made so by the courtesy and kindness which has been extended to me by students and staff colleagues alike. The students of L.C.I. have written its history. Wherever it is known, the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute enjoys one of the finest of reputations. It is my hope that 1 may be remembered as having contributed something worthwhile to that reputation. It is my wish that each of you may experience the rich rewards that come from service to others. To all, my very best wishes and farewell. W. R. Erickson 9i TO RETIRE Mr. Erickson has been at the I.C.l. for 25 years. He joined the staff in 1957 as a teacher and later acted as a counsellor. In 1964, Mr. Erickson was appointed to Assistant Principal. In 1979, he became our Principal. Mr. Erickson has done a lot for our school. In 1958 he started the school band program and was the band leader for six years. Mr. Erickson has always had an avid interest in sports and hopes when he retires in June to do some fishing, golfing, and hopefully some travelling as well. The staff and students wish Mr. and Mrs. Erickson a long and happy retirement. 95 OFFICE STAFF Miss Mcl.can Mrs. Millar Mrs. Bercnl Mrs. Cassar Mrs. Coghlin Mrs. Collier Miss Madsen Mrs. White 97 Mrs. Gray LIBRARY Mr. Pcnncr Missing: Mrs. Allison. The team was plagued by untimely fumbles and blocked kicks throughout the year, which severely hampered the team’s potential. But, highlights of the Rams’ season were the exhibition win over Medicine Mat High, and some outstanding individual efforts by our senior ball players. The Ram Football Club looks forward to the 1982 season with the return of such outstanding veterans as Doug Nyhoff, John Wilson, Pete Andrews, Scott Harris, Chad Titsing. David Downs, Neil Seiben, and Mike Gerencser. 107 CLIPPER QUEEN BASKETBALL The Clipper Queens enjoyed a tremendously successful season. The season record of 29 wins and 10 losses was filled with many highlights. Of the five tournaments they participated in, the Clippers played in the finals four times, winning the Central Memorial Tournament in Calgary and the Medicine Hat School Tournament. The Clippers capped the season by participating in the 4A Girls’ Provincial Championship in Grande Prairie where they lost a hard fought game to the eventual champions, the host St. Joseph’s High School Ceinahs. Despite the fact that injuries and promotions io the varsity Clipper Queens partially hindered their progress, both the team and each individual player showed great improvement over the season’s duration. The Schooners look forward to the future and the contributions they will make to the varsity Clippers. >09 RAMS BASKETBALL This year the I.CM. Rams were in a rebuilding phase. Although there were 8 Grade 12 players on the team, most were relatively inexperienced in Ram Basketball. The Rams captured third place at their own tournament, third in the Cardston Tournament, second at the Raymond Tournament, and third at the 16 team Vic Redman Tourney in Edmonton. The Rams lacked in rebounding capabilities this year, which hurt them somewhat in the league, but we hope to play well in the 4A Zone Playoffs at the Sportsplex and finish off the year on a winning note.
