Summary:The annual publication of the students of Winston Churchill High School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (1973-74) Knowledge, Its Own Reward Winston Churchill High School Lethbridge, Alberta 1973-1974i ii MESSAGE BROM THE STUDENT .CCUNCIi Football always starts off the year and this.past year our team was one; Churchill has had. A lot of effort has to be*ptit in by ;council tcforgai programs, and pc supply tlie nttmey for the! teams and cheerleaders. Student attendance at:basketbai; games was especially poor considering thatwc had ’winmirg''teams The teachers challenged uslto an attendance trophy a couple of times,! but always w on a teachers to student ratio, i would like to encourage everyone to go out to games next year because it looks like they are going to be "great ones". Council was especiallyheidful with 'he Exop '74 travel group. Everyone who went had a great time. Next year the travel group might go to Australia. TH a chance in a lifetime and it's great to get'away from school and maybe get to a few fellow students better. s and Dances this year were a grea*. success we made money,on all, but* the first one. I hope no one felt out of place at our dances because.ihe idea is to have run. Finiar.'s icqjess sponsored by council. Kirk Jenson's first try at directing Rainbow was another success : a play by himself was fantastic. Anyone who didn't see the show really jrnfssed sc-me- Ajdsh everyone good luck in next year's musical. Remember [the people are what make it and hdupfjis always needed for the cast, make-up, prograthO sets, etc. There is a job forcveiyonc and thw satisfaction of being involved and help* ^Kti^n^to^nakc it a'success. M Council is there for the students and if youfcon't like something Let them know. But jj what wc really need is people to bring ideaA and suggestions ,to council and then hclt» carry them out. To next You’ council: President; and Steven Miller, Freshmen President. Thlse past years at Churchill have been three of the best, and I know I feci almost ^radl^fcpressed at the thought of leaving for the last time as a student. I'll alwafS'* remember the good times like Finian's Rainbow, Oklahoma, Variety N ight, and Graduation, but also the sad times like hearing about the death of af school bu These huwLbeen part of my high school life and I'll cherish thenj^ I'll be bad "family" to visit and I hope that I will be accepted as one of die Churchill C«rol'Mo<5reSTUDENTS’ COUNCIL BACK ROW, Left to Right: Jane Busowsky, Neil Kelly, Leslie Humeny, Evelyn Stuedler, Gerry Hart, Patty Tomita, Mel Clewes. FRONT ROW: Fawn McLaughlin, Carol Moore, Randy Rac, Marlin Howg, Jane McPherson.WINSTON SALUTES Wayne Terriff wasn't any run of the mill principal, he was more of a friend to everyone in the school. We never hesitated to approach him with any problems because we knew he would understand. His leaving was Churchill's loss, but we know he is going on to bigger and better things. He has definitely left his mark on Churchill and on the students here and paved new methods for the educational system in Winston Churchill. Thanks Wayne for being such a great guy! DQn't worry Mr. Anderson you're not doing such a bad job yourself. Kris Nielson WA YNE TERRIFF PRINCIPAL AND FRIENDHe that hath a good master, And cannot keep him, He that hath a good servant, And cannot contend with him, He that hath such conditions, That no man loveth him, May well know another, But few will know him. Hugh Rhodes THE RIGHT SORT OF FELLOW You may know the fellow who thinks he thinks, Or the fellow who thinks he knows, But find the fellow who knows he thinks, And you know the fellow who knows. Anonymous PHILOSOPHICAL ADVICE He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not; He is a fool, slum him. He who knows not, and knows that he knows not; He is simple, teach him. He who knows, and knows not that he knows; He is asleep, wake him. He who knows, and knows that he knows; He is wise, follow him. Anonymous THOSE WERE THE DA YS MY FRIENDTEACHERS?v - J.10 WE THOUGHT THEY’D NEVER ENDEXPO ’74 Approximately 100 students from Winston Churchill High School attended this year's Expo '74 at Spokane, Washington. The group, chaperoned by six members of the staff, left Lethbridgeon May 9 and made it home in time for supper on Tuesday, May 16, allowing two days for bus travel to and from Spokane. This gave the students four full days in which to explore the wonders of Expo. The greater part of the money required to finance this venture was raised through student projects such as raffles, bottle drives, chocolate bar sales, and bake sales. The whole thing was a lot of fun. The group stayed at the local University, using the dormitores, cafeteria, and other facilities "on campus". In addition, it was quite educational. We learned a little about the culture and traditions of many different countries that had displays in the pavilions. Who knows where 1975 will take us? m \ pi *' I : U JY (3 mm I All BL' M 1 * ' 1 .A ^ i' ft 1 s | ■ \ ) JL M ‘ 1 • l V ^ n U rrCANOE CLUB THE CANOEING THING Beauteous, untamed country rolling, Misty horizon, and endless sky Smile upon ribbons of rivers And friendly stem men everywhere. (Hey you guys, who's rockin' the boat this time? And how about showin' some power up there!) Seasoned veterans of the stream are they, Plying their oars through frisky white ripples, As their keen eyes scan for rocks and things. (Look-out for those logs, idiot! What're you trying to do? drown me? For Pete's sake. The boat's gonna be swamped again!) Pushed onward by their mighty leader Whose rare courage outshines even theirs. He is a shining example to all his men Ever showing fortitude and diplomacy. (All right you clowns, who's got my cigarettes! How do you expect me to get up at 7 a.m. without my cigarettes? And who stole my lawnchair?) The velvet quiet of night has come, And each man sits 'fore glowing red fire, Wondering, whispering, or praying, Ashe plumbs the depths of solitude. (Will you guys kindly be quiet out there before we come and blow out those bonfires? Some of us do try and sleep occasionally y'know.) The street is sleepy, as befits a suburb path, When suddenly - a van roars through and stops. Ejecting one grimy traveller and kit. Then safe in hot bath, comfort of technology, he happily plots his next foray into The wilderness, the Beautiful People. The Good Life, (By Canoe of course!) FRONT ROW: Mamie Anderson. Playing to a goodsized crowd at the Yates Thursday evening, WCHS students worked a little razzle-dazzle magic of their own and thoroughly captivated their audience. Tme, Finian's Rainbow tends to be the sort of play even misanthropes enjoy, hut that doesn't mean just any offlianded adaptation will suffice. The WCHS production, however, was leagues away from being offhand or careless. Hard work, inspired planning, clever bits of humor plus a good deal of burgeoning amateur talent were evident in every scene. The set was attractive and sturdily functional - thank heavens, because nothing wracks the collective audience nerve more than sets that sway, quiver and threaten collapse with each exit and entrance. The pace.of the musical was brisk; although die production ran well Over two hours, the rale of leprechauns, sharecroppers and a pot of gold in tobacco country never lagged. The WCHS players achieved that rare thing Thursday night - a strong series of opening scenes. Graced with several pleasant songs, "Finian's Rainbow" as WCHS produced it was well-served by sensitise musical handling. The chorus gave good support and the orchestra, under the direction of Willie Mathis, enhanced the play with surprisingly sophisticated renditions. Most endearing of all, the high school's production boasted those "extra" touches - witty little one-liners, well-placed gestures and several actors who had obviously made an effort to "get into" the characters they played and bring something of themselves to the roles. One negative observation about the choreography (which was, on the whole, otherwise good): one or two characters, especially Sharon McLoncrgan, seemed to have twitchy toc-itis. I mean, a j>crson's feel don't have to move all the time; that's not choreography, that's St. Vitus' Dance. Rhonda Huston did very well as a charming colleen; Iter portrayal of Sharon was natural, her singing consistently enjoyable. Kendal Ducc as Woody Mahoney began his role somewhat woodcnly, but gained more facility as the play progressed. Neil Kelly was convincing as Sharon's father Finian - no mean feat for a high school student, even when he's aided by a very good makeup job, as was Mr. Kelly. And of course Og - what would "Finian" be without a little green leprechaun? Greg Martin, nimble of foot and wit, was the perfect Og, clearly savoring his role, developing it cleverly and passing his enjoyment on to the audience. Martin Howg, as Billboard Rawkins, also gave a quality performance. Praise too, to Diane Turner for her dancing as Susan Mahoney, for Randy Rac's characterization of Buzz Collins. "Finian's Rainbow" continues at the Yates tonight and Saturday. Curtaintime is 8 p. m. It might be the closest you'll get to a pot of gold for a long time to come. 15 WE’D SING AND DANCE, FORE VER AND A DAY(hi order of appearance) SUNNY (Harmonica Player).Nestor Hryvnak BUZZ COLLINS.Randy Rac SHERRIFF.Albert Dodson 1st SHARECROPPER.Derek Redman 2nd SHARECROPPER. . I am referring to the addition of the kindergarten classes. This is a belated welcome to them and a hope that our degenerate students didn't corrupt the children. They may be just what we need to keep us in line. I'm sure everyone in Churchill joins me in welcoming the kids and thanking them for putting a little life back into Winston Churchill. 39 TEA CHER FAREWELLAWARDS ry. V ySTATESMEN Editors Left to Right: Hollic Wheeler, David Cunningham, Kris Nielson, Wendy Sera. Well here it is! The Statesmen, a yearbook compiling the year's activities and events. Once again the yearbook has been turned out in the usual relish by four or five students. I would like to thank these people, two of which do not appear in the picture. They arc Penny Heinonen and Jackie Rccdyk. Also a special thanks to Ricky Sera, a grade nine student from Wilson, who is responsible for the artwork. We had to resort to an outside source for our artwork because no student in Churchill would do artwork for their yearbook. Still another thanks to Barb Day for her guidance throughout the year and for returning to the school after June 7 and helping us finish the yearbook. One final thanks to all the students in Churchill who made it nearly impossible to get decent pictures for their yearbook. We hope you'll enjoy the Statesmen and that it will bring pleasant memories of Winston Churchill years from now. BACK ROW: Vicki Lund, Roseanne Hunk a, Wendy Rosenfelt, Gregg Langhofer, Harold Hahn, Mark Charles, Keith Selvig, Mrs. Dodd, Staff Advisor. THE CHURCHILL L1ASON This year was a good year for the school newspaper. The staff was large and very cooperative. Our staff advisor, Mrs. Dodd helped us get started. Christine Higa, the assistant editor got things together, especially where lay-out was concerned. Mark Charles, who was sports editor, managed to fill a whole page with sports events. The art, done by Greg Langhofer, Gail Deg and Vicki Lund, always managed to fill the empty spaces. Keith Selvig had a regular column while Barry Doe, Barbara Henderson, Laura Scroggie and Rosanne Hunka were free-lance writers. Linda Meinzer and Wendy Rosenfelt were in charge of entertainment, and also contributed some articles. We started something new this year-solicited advertising. This cut down our newspaper costs and got the community involved. Sue Wilton and Harry Hahn did most of the work in that department. Thank-you, staff, for a good year. I wish next year's editor as good a staff as I had. It carried them to a first place finish in league play and to victories over arch enemies LCI and CCH. "Although we fell short of our initial objective which was to win the championship, the team never lacked in spirit. We were in better condition this year then ever before and also our bench strength was very good. Our first game against CCHS helped us realize that we were a good team and that is what made us think about what we were doing and it gave us the strength to go on.
