Paul Francis is wearing a feather headdress and Hudson Bay jacket, and Nicholas de Grandmaison is wearing a cowboy hat, shirt with neck scarf and buckskin jacket. Paul Francis rests one hand on Nicholas de Grandmaison's shoulder while Nicholas holds the portrait. Nicholas is holding what appears to be pens in his hand holding the bottom corner of the painting. A tipi is set up behind them. A typewritten notation on the back of the photograph reads: "M 5944 Stoney Indian Chief - Nick de Grandmaison, Indian painter near Banff, Alta.". Beneath the notation is a red stamp that reads: "photograph by Canadian Pacific Railway, Printed in Canada" and at the bottom of the back is a notation in pencil: "M5944".
