It is a provincial university with membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The University of Lethbridge participates with the universities and other post-secondary institutions of Alberta in a variety of cooperative pro-grams and activities. The University of Lethbridge was established in 1967 with a student population of 638. It has grown to its current population of 3,600 full and part-time stu-dents on a campus overlooking the beautiful Oldman River. Another 1,500 stu-dents are enrolled in Summer School studies. LOCATION The University is located on 457 acres in west Lethbridge, a growing sub-divi-sion in Alberta's third largest city with a population of approximately 62,000 people. The centre of a prosperous farming and ranching area, Lethbridge is charac-terized by its many green areas and parks, and its abundant cultural and recre-ational facilities. It is located in southern Alberta, 90 miles east of the Canadi-an Rockies and 60 miles north of the United States border. FACILITIES The campus, designed by architect Arthur Erickson, has received international acclaim for its architectural originality and functional design. University Hall The focal point of the campus is University Hall where students learn, study and live. This facility houses the cafeteria, residence, classrooms, science lab-oratories, library and some administrative offices. The University Centre for the Arts This facility, officially opened in September, 1981, houses the Departments of Art, Dramatic Arts, Music and the Fine Arts components of the Faculty of Edu-cation. It features a 406-seat multi-purpose theatre, a 203-seat recital hall/film theatre, the University Art Gallery, classrooms, practice rooms and studios. The Centre has become the focus of southern Alberta's cultural scene offering world-class performances in the arts in addition to faculty and student produc-tions. Physical Education Building For physical education majors as well as those who want a break from their studies, this facility provides gymnasia, weight room, sauna and steam room facilities in addition to the classrooms, administrative offices and auxiliary spaces. Adjacent to the building is an Olympic standard track, soccer pitch and tennis courts. Service Buildings Four service buildings complete the campus, housing a Child Care Centre and various service departments. Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre The Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre features an Olympic standard swim-ming pool. The Aquatic Centre has an eight-lane, 50 metre pool tank, three and five metre diving towers and a 250-seat spectator gallery. Movable bulkheads make it possible for three separate activities at one time, and an adjustable floor makes the pool accessible to non-swimmers, young children and disabled and handicapped persons. Students Union Building (SUB) Opening in the Fall of 1990, the SUB is a joint project of the Students' Union, University and Government of Alberta. Students' Union will occupy 55% of the SUB, featuring a retail floor, a cabaret hall, restaurant, office suite, club rooms, Alumni offices, CKUL Radio, the Meliorist and more. The Bookstore, all Stu-dent Affairs departments and the Registrar's office will also be located in the SUB. The SUB's commanding view of the adman River Valley promises to make its 24 hour study lounges and restaurant a prime gathering place for the Universi-ty community. Turcotte Hall Turcotle Hall, adjacent to the Physical Education Building, is a welcome addi-tion to the University of Lethbridge campus. The first two floors of the three-storey building houses 20 offices, four classrooms, two seminar rooms and study areas in use by the departments of Anthropology, Philosophy and Histo-ry. These were completed in December 1990. The third floor, when completed later in 1990, will house the University of Lethbridge School of Nursing. Aperture Park The options for students wishing to live on-campus will be greatly improved by the completion of two apartment buildings and two townhouse complexes in the summer of 1990. The names of the four buildings, Kainaa House, Piikani House, Siksika House and Tsuut'ina House, are the respective Blackfoot words for the Blood, Peigan, Blackfoot and Sarcee tribes of southern Alberta. The one, two and four-bedroom furnished apartments are attractive alternatives to the dormitory-style residences in University Hall. For the first time, the Universi-ty of Lethbridge is able to provide family housing in the 54 two and three-bed-room townhouse units. PROGRAMS The Faculty of Arts and Science offers instruction leading to the degrees Bach-elor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Bachelor Arts and Sciences (BaSc.). The Faculty of Eduction offers instruction leading to the degrees Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Eduction (M.Ed.). The Faculty also offers a post-baccalaureate Professional Diploma in Education (D.P.E.). The School of Fine Arts offers the degrees Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.). The Faculty of Management offers the degree Bachelor of Management (B.Mgt.) as well as certificate and post-baccalaureate diploma programs. The School of Nursing offers the post-basic degree, Bachelor of Nursing (B.N.). The University also offers programs for transfer of credit to professional facul-ties at other universities in Agriculture, Dentistry, Engineering, Environmental Design, Food Science, Forestry, Home Economics, Law. Library Science, Medicine, Optometry, Social Welfare and Veterinary Medicine. A four-year Bachelor of Social Work is offered by the University of Calgary, in cooperation with the University of Lethbridge, on the Lethbridge campus. A public service program offered by Continuing Education is designed to meet the variety of educational needs and interests of the community. It consists of non-credit instruction, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, performances and workshops in the University's fields of study. These programs are offered both on campus and at off-campus locations and at times convenient to part-time students. 3 STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY In the process of transmitting and advancing higher learning, the University of Lethbridge endeavours to cultivate humane val-ues; it seeks to foster intellectual growth, social development, aesthetic sensitivity, personal ethics and physical well-being; it seeks to cultivate the transcendental dimension of the scholar's personality. Flexibility and openness to innovation will be the distinguishing feature of the University of Lethbridge. Notwithstanding its intention to offer diverse subject matter contributing to the acquisition of professional skills, the University regards learning as an end in itself, not merely as a means to material ends. Its primary aims are to foster the spirit of free inquiry and the critical interpretation of ideas. The undergraduate is, and should remain, the focus of the University's endeavour. Students are invited to participate in all phas-es of university life. The highest degree of interaction between students and faculty is encouraged, and should not be confined to the physical limits of the campus. It is desirable and necessary that the University should relate closely to the local community. Nevertheless, its outlook should not be determined by any regional or sectional interest. Through exposures to cosmopolitan influences and diverse cultures, schol-ars are best able to evaluate their own social and cultural milieux. First-Year Students Every first-year student is admitted into the Faculty of Arts and Sci-ence. This admission is for applicants who intend: 1. Professional Transfer Programs Applicants who intend to enrol in one of the professional transfer pro-grams should note that an applicant without the recommended admis-sion subjects for a particular professional program may be admissible to the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Lethbridge. but then may require a longer period to complete the professional program. d. Transfer from Other Universities to the University of Lethbridge Applicants who have previously attended one or more other post-sec-ondary institutions must meet the admission requirements of the intended University of Lethbridge program. Such applicants may need to seek admission to the Faculty of Arts and Science to complete the requirements for subsequent admission to the B.Ed., B.F.A., B.Mgt. and B.Mus. programs. Upon admission, students are assigned credit for subjects comparable to courses offered at the University of Lethbridge that are passed with acceptable grades. Specified credit in a subject area is assigned when there is a University of Lethbridge course equivalent to the course being transferred. Unspecified credit in a subject area is assigned when there is no course equivalent, but the course being transferred is acceptable in meeting subject requirements for a degree. Applicants who have completed courses at Alberta colleges are referred to the Alberta Transfer Guide for detailed information about credit. The Guide is available through the respective college Admis-sions Office. e. Second Bachelor Degree Students Applicants with undergraduate degrees are admissible to the University of Lethbridge to pursue a second degree. Depending upon their appli-cability to the curriculum and the standard of performance achieved, some courses taken for the previous degree may be credited toward a second degree. Students are not eligible to pursue a second degree program which is similar to that already completed at another recognized institution. Such applicants may be admitted as special students to pursue studies of interest. f. Visiting Students Applicants currently enrolled in a degree program at another accredited degree granting institution, who wish to enrol in courses at the Univer-sity of Lethbridge, must have their home institution forward a "letter of permission" directly to the Admissions office. This letter should specify courses which the student may take at the University of Lethbridge. Visiting Students should note that registration in specific courses is not guaranteed. g. Enrolment Limits Admission to the University does not constitute a guarantee that a stu-dent will be able to register for any specific course in a given semester. Enrolment limits are enforced by all Faculties and Schools when instructional resources become exhausted. 3. ADMISSION TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCE Admission to Faculty of Arts and Science programs may be gained by meeting the requirements of one of the following routes: a. Alberta High School Credits Applicants seeking admission on the basis of Alberta High School cre-dentials must present: 1. A High School Diploma. 2. Credit for English 30 and three subjects from the following list with 11 an overall average of 60% and a ject. Note: The blended grade will be ing this average. A fifth subject at the Grade 12 level with a minimum mark of 50%. The grade in the fifth subject is not used in computing the average for admission purposes. The fifth subject may be any combination of Grade 12 courses offered for five credits as part of the Alberta High School curriculum, provided that they do not duplicate one of the disciplines noted above. i.e. credit for both English 30 and 33 will not be counted. b. Other Canadian High School Credits An applicant from another Canadian province who has completed the admission requirements of the university or universities of that province normally is considered eligible for admission to the University of Leth-bridge. Appropriate academic subjects and a satisfactory average are required for admission. Early Admission Early admission is granted to Canadian high school students who have a 70 percent average, based on two completed matriculation subjects and predicted grades for another two matriculation subjects. The pro-cess requires the recommendation of a school official and is applicable only between mid March and mid May. Students are advised to consult their School Guidance Counsellors for applications. d. Alberta Colleges or Institutes of Technology The University admits any applicant who has successfully completed one year or more of studies at a recognized Alberta College or Institute of Technology and is recommended by that institution for university admission. For admission requirements. the University accepts courses offered by colleges which are deemed by the colleges to be equivalent to Alberta High School 30-level courses. e. Transfer from Accredited Colleges or Universities An applicant who has successfully completed one year or more of work at an accredited degree-granting institution or a transferable program at an accredited college is admissible to the University of Lethbridge. One year is considered to be seven transferable courses. f. Mature Student - Not Normally Open to Non-Canadian Students 1. Does not have the educational credentials required for admission through another admission route. 2. Is at least 19 years of age at the commencement of the session. 3. Provides evidence of ability to benefit from University level studies. Specific admission requirements are determined during a personal interview arranged by the Admissions Office. Credentials from Other Countries In general, applicants from other countries require qualifications com-parable to those of Canadian applicants. Details on requirements for specific countries are available from the Admissions Office. Proof of proficiency in the English language is required. h. College Entrance Examination Board Tests Applicants are admitted upon presentation of acceptable College Entrance Examination Board scores. Applicants should write the C.E.E.B. scholastic Aptitude Test (verbal and mathematical) and three Achievement Tests related to their intend-ed University program. Admission as a High School Student (Advanced Placement) Alberta high school students may be admitted on a part-time basis if they are: 1. Currently enrolled in a southern Alberta high school program. 2. Recommended by the appropriate high school officials to be academically prepared for university-level work in a given subject area or areas. Credit courses successfully completed are credited toward degree requirements upon admission as a full-time student. 4. Official transcripts from all secondary (high school) and post-sec-ondary (college or university) institutions attended. Whenever pos-sible, transcripts should be sent directly from the issuing institution to the University of Lethbridge. b. Procedures for Applicants from Other Countries Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or landed immigrants follow the procedures outlined above for all applicants, and must also: 1. Provide notarized English translations of all documents not in the English language. 2. Provide proof of proficiency in the English language if first language is not English. One acceptable proof of proficiency is achieving a satisfactory level of performance (550+) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An alternative proof of proficiency is successful completion of the Advanced Level ESL Program at the University of Lethbridge. Landed immigrants whose first language is other than English and who have not resided in Canada for a minimum of three years are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language as out-lined above. c. ADVICE AND INFORMATION A student who wishes academic advice during registration should seek it from an academic advisor in the Faculty or School in which that student is registering. A student who wishes other kinds of information and advice about registra-tion - such as deadlines and procedures - should ask at the Office of the Registrar. Notwithstanding the above, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that registration is complete and correct. 2. TERMS USED DURING REGISTRATION a. Enrolment and Registration For purposes of this Calendar, these terms are used interchangeably. b. Year of Student A student is classified as first-year until 10 courses have been success-fully completed. Students who have successfully completed 10 to 19 (inclusive) courses are awarded second-year standing, 20 to 29 courses third-year stand-ing and 30 or more courses fourth-year standing. Students working toward a second degree are classified as year five. Special students are classified as year six. Professional Diploma in Education students are classified as year seven. Masters degree candidates are classified as year eight. c. Part-Ttme and Full-Time A part-time student is enrolled in fewer than three courses in a semester. A full-time student is enrolled in three or more courses in a semester. The usual course load for a full-time student is five courses per semester. It should be stressed, however, that heavy courses loads are a common cause of poor academic performance. d. Regular Student A regular student has satisfied all the admission requirements and is pursuing a program of studies leading to a degree, including students admitted through the Mature Student admission route. e. Special Student Special Students are those formally admitted to University but are not pursuing a program of studies leading to a degree. The following conditions apply to enrolment as a Special Student: 1. Special Students are admitted to the University through one of the existing admission routes to a particular Faculty/School. 2. Such students must at least meet the admission requirements for the first year. 3. In the event that program requirements are not followed, the Faculty/School in which a student is registered has the authority to declare a student "special". 4. Special Students are not pursuing a program leading to a degree at the University of Lethbridge or any other university. 5. Courses taken as a Special Student are not guaranteed for credit in a degree program should the student change status to regular student. 6 Special Students who change status will be required to meet the program requirements in effect at the time of change. 7 Special Students may take courses offered by any Faculty/School, provided all academic regulations pertaining to the courses are met and subject to available places. 8 For each registration, Special Students must have courses of study approved by the Faculty/School to which they are admitted. 9. Special Students have low priority on access to classes. f. Visiting Student 1. Visiting Students enrol in courses at the University of Lethbridge with credit to be applied toward a program at another institution. A letter from a responsible officer of the receiving institution is required authorizing enrolment in specific courses at the University of Lethbridge acceptable for credit at the receiving institution. Such students are subject to the academic regulations at the University of Lethbridge, including both general regulations and any special regulations of the Faculty/School in which they are enrolled. 2. As it may suit their program, and within the residence requirement of the Faculty/School in which they are enrolled, students in good standing at the University of Lethbridge may be authorized to take courses at another university if their registration as a Visiting Stu-dent is acceptable to that institution. Application for such authorization must be approved in advance by the Dean/Director of the Faculty/School in which the student is enrolled. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that an offi-cial transcript of grades earned as a Visiting Student at another institution is sent to the Registrar of the University of Lethbridge. g. Audit Student An Audit student has been granted permission by the instructor to attend lectures in a course on the understanding that the student may not participate in class discussions (except by invitation of the instruc-tor), submit assignments, or sit for examinations. No degree credit is granted for the course. An Audit Registration Form must be submitted to the Registrar's Office. h. Occasional Student Occasional Student enrolment is designed to enable mature perso9s to enrol in University courses as part-time students, without having to pre-sent any formal educational records. This enrolment plan will particu-larly appeal to those persons who wish initially to take courses for general interest, but who may wish to apply for admission sometime in the future. A student may enrol as an Occasional Student under the following con-ditions: 1. Enrolment is explicitly as an Occasional Student. 2.
