Description
Summary:Blood typing is a method of identifying antigens on the surface of red blood cells. Blood types can be evaluated using rapid kits for blood typing in dogs. In the present work, 103 dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) were evaluated. The animals under study were grouped according to breed and sex. Each dog was typed with the commercial kit Kabb Dog Blood® (Korea). After identifying the blood types, three donors from groups DEA 1.1, DEA 1.2, and DEA 1- were chosen for crossmatching with the remaining 100 dogs to determine in vitro compatibility. The results obtained with the 103 canine patients were 93.2% DEA 1.1 positive, 4.9% were DEA 1.2, and 1.9% were 1- negative. Therefore, it was confirmed that the blood type DEA 1 was the universal donor since there was no agglutination in the present study when crossed with the other blood types of DEA 1.1 and DEA 1.2. Of the total crossmatches performed, 5.3 % were positive, and 94.7 % were negative. It was emphasized the efficiency, speed, and simplicity of the test, which takes approximately two minute (min) compared to the crossmatching method, which takes approximately 30 min, thus saving time in emergency cases where the patient’s life is in danger.
