Description
Summary:The role of eyeglasses in impression formation was examined, as well as the difference in judgements between subjects who themselves have sight problems and those who have not. Additionally, we examined the difference in judgements between subjects that say they do not use the eyeglasses stereotype in social perception and those who say they do. Female students of psychology (N = 160) judged 4 young women photographed with and without glasses for 10 traits: intelligent, industrious, critical, dependable, honest, sociable, amusing, kind, conventional and physically attractive. The target persons when wearing glasses usually tended to be rated more intelligent, industrious, critical, dependable, honest and conventional, and less sociable, amusing and kind. Glasses had no statistically significant effect upon judgement of physical attractiveness. Also, no differences were found between subjects who themselves had sight problems and those who had not, as well as there were no differences between subjects who did and who did not perceive themselves as influenced by the eyeglasses stereotype in social perception.
