Description
Summary:The Juneau Icefield Research Project (JIRP), a decade-long (1948-1958) program of glaciological research, was organized and sponsored by the American Geographical Society (AGS) of New York City. JIRP was led by William O. Field, Director of the AGS Department of Exploration and Field Research and supported by the Office of Naval Research. Maynard Malcolm Miller was responsible for field operations in Alaska. After 1958, Miller assumed responsibility for JIRP, renaming it Juneau Icefield Research Program, and gave it a stronger educational focus. This program continues to the present, attracting participants from around the world. The JIRP films in the American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) cover the initial project period 1948-1958. The films were digitized for the AGS Library as part of a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant. They document research on fluctuations of glaciers in relation to climate change, and feature mass-balance and meteorological measurements, construction of high-ice camps, close-up shots of JIRP scientists, airdrops from airplanes of the Kodiak Naval Air Station, scenes of downtown Juneau, and many natural features of the Juneau Icefield.
