This is a rare map of the United States and the only Civil War era wall map to be issued by the United States government. It is the first 1861 edition published simultaneously by Taintor & Company in Philadelphia and Holmes Harrison & Company of London. Matthew Fontaine Maury was the original cartographer who published this map in 1860, but because he was a Confederate, his name and portrait were removed from this map and replaced by the U.S. Capitiol and Mount Vernon vignettes.
