Description
Summary:"Nightfall on GAiA" is a speculative ethnographic film directed and filmed by Juan Francisco Salazar in the Antarctic Peninsula between 2011 and 2014 as part of ongoing anthropological research in Antarctica. Short synopsis: A devastating planetary event has left Maori astrobiologist Xuě Noon confined alone in an Antarctic research station. Her survival is a tale for the future preservation of Antarctica: the last wilderness on a fragile planet and the new frontier for human inhabitation. The film is an allegory of the unfolding and looming global conflicts over Antarctic resources, and speculates on the possible and the plausible futures of Antarctica in the context of paramount social and ecological crises. The film is told through a personal diary narrative form (akin to the diaries of polar explorers) using the poetic first-person voice-over of a fictional character. The world premiere of the film was at the RAI International Ethnographic Film Festival in Bristol (2015) and the Australian premiere at the Antenna Film Festival (2015). Major Festival screenings include CPH:DOX Copenhagen International Film Festival (2015), Barcelona Planet Film Festival (Award for Best Documentary 2016) and Bogota International Documentary Film Festival (2015).The film has also been screened at the following international conferences: European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA 2016); the American Anthropology Association (AAA 2015) and the Australian Anthropological Society (AAS 2017).
