| Summary: | This study investigated views, beliefs, and values held by a First Nations Community (Pikwakanagan Golden Lake, Ontario) regarding preschool literacy practices and the importance placed on home and community preschool literacy activities and programs. Community members, parents, and program administrators provided information through focus groups, questionnaires, and personal interviews. Focus groups were independently analyzed for themes by three researchers. Fifteen themes emerged in three different areas. Questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Program information was recorded from personal interviews and focus groups. Overall, the results indicated similarities as well as differences among First Nations and other communities exist on literacy development and participation in home and community literacy activities. The community’s definition of literacy, the importance of literacy, the role of parents and others in literacy development, and participation in home and community activities are covered. Thevalueofthisinformationonliteracyandparticipationforthecommunityis discussed. |
