Description
Summary:Results of the November 2018 waterbird census at Lake Balaton and its surrounding wetlands. Waterbird census was carried out on 56 survey plots around Lake Balaton and its surrounding wetlands on 18th November 2018, like in previous years (KOVÁCS, 2008a, 2008b, 2008c, 2013a, 2013b, 2013c, 2013d, 2015; KOVÁCS & HAJDU, 2015a, 2015b; KOVÁCS & BRUCKNER 2022a, 2022b, 2022c) by BirdLife Hungary South-Balaton Local Group. A total of 35 waterbird species from 8 orders and 8 families were observed (Table 1.). The highest number (>3500 ind.) was counted at Balatonszárszó, the highest species richness was found at Balatonberény. We counted more than 100 individuals in further 34 plots (Table 2., Map 1.), while species richness was exceeded 10 in 9 survey plots (Map 2.). On the fishponds and marshes, the dominant (D>5%) species were the Black-headed Gull, the Greylag Goose, the Eurasian Coot, the Mallard, the Greater White-fronted Goose, the Great Cormorant, and the Eurasian Teal. On Lake Balaton the Mallard, the Eurasian Coot, the Common Pochard, the Greylag Goose, the Black-headed Gull, and the Common Goldeneye. Interesting faunistic result was the occurrence of the Northern Pintail (1-5 ind. at Balatonberény, Balatonederics), the Greater Scaup (10-4 ind. at Balatonszemes, Balatonszárszó), the Velvet Scoter (2-2 ind. at Fonyód, Balatonszárszó), the Black-throated Loon (1-1-1 ind. at Szántód, Balatonkenese, strand, Balatonkenese-Balatonfűzfő), the Red-necked Grebe (2-3-1 ind. at Bélatelep, Balatonboglár, Sajkod) and the Black-necked Grebe (1-2-4-1-1-3-1-2-1-2 ind. at Balatonberény, Bélatelep, Fonyód, Balatonföldvár, Balatonszabadi, Balatonaliga, Balatonkenese-Balatonfűzfő, Káptalanfüred, Alsóörs, Fenékpuszta).
