Description
Summary:During a systematic seabird survey in the offshore waters of Surinam, a Common Swift Apus apus was observed on 12 July 2012, c.151 nautical miles (280 km) off the coast. Based on the structural characteristics and plumage details evident in the photographs, the bird was confirmed to be a Common Swift. The clearly forked tail does not match the shorter, broader and square-tipped tail of White-chinned Swift and there are no other dark long-tailed swifts with a white throat patch in the Americas. Other similar-looking Apus species can also be ruled out. Our record is the first for Surinam and South America
