Summary:Letters exchanged in January 1976 between Lorenzo A. Richards and Duwayne M. Anderson: (1) Letter dated 13 January 1976 from Lorenzo A. Richards to "Duwayne" in response to Anderson's letter; (2) Letter dated 7 January 1976 from Duwayne M. Anderson of the Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, inviting him to participate in a "Colloquium on water in planetary regoliths," i.e., detecting water on other planetary bodies in the solar system Colloquium on Water in planetary Regoliths January 7, 1976 Dr. L. Anderson Charles L. Drake Robert C. Reynolds Dear Wren: At the request of the Planetary Program Office, NASA Headquarters, we are organizing a two to three day colloquium dealing with the occurrence, the detection and measurement of water on the planetary "bodies in our solar system. In addition to Dartmouth College and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, co-sponsors will include the American Geophysical Union Task Force on Soil Water Problems in Cold Regions and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Permafrost. We would like to convene the meetings here some time in the spring. At the present time our plan is to organize sessions on: the most relevant aspects of terrestrial water; the most probable status of water on the various planetary bodies; and the methods of water detection and measurement that might be recommended for planetary exploration missions. Certain aspects of these topics fall within your field of interest and I hope that you might be in a position to contribute a short paper dealing with the one that most intrigues you. We plan to publish extended abstracts (three to four pages) of each contribution and distribute them before the sessions start in order to stimulate as rapid an exchange of information and ideas as possible. The question of eventually publishing a proceedings is being left open for now. Please let us have your reaction. It would be helpful to know what contribution you might be interested in making and who you personally would like to hear discuss the three topics mentioned. It would also be helpful to learn what other topics ought to be included and whether or not the timing proposed is workable. This invitation is going to about thirty leading scientists in the United States, Canada and Europe who may be in a position to participate. I know that even if time permits, it may be difficult for you to come. Although funds at our disposal are extremely limited, it may be possible to contribute a portion of the funds required for your travel. Depending upon your interest and circumstances, we would try our best to help as much as possible. With best regards. Sincerely yours vdMiy DUWAYNE M/ ANDERSON Departmej^t of Earth Sciences Dartmouth College Hanover, NH 03755
