Conference History With more than 120 Nobel Laureates across all of its campuses and the fi rst ever to reach 450 NCAA Championships, the Pac-12 Conference is synonymous with both academic excellence and athle c success, having earned the nickname the "Conference of Champions." The Pac-12 opened a new chapter its long and storied history on July 1, 2011 with the addi on of the University of Utah and the University of Colorado. The roots of the Pac-12 Conference go back more than 80 years to December 15, 1915, when the Pacifi c Coast Conference (PCC) was founded at a mee ng at the Oregon Hotel in Portland, Ore. Original membership consisted of four schools: the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All s ll are charter members of the Conference. Pacifi c Coast Conference play began in 1916. One year later, Washington State College (now Washington State University) was accepted into the Conference, and Stanford University joined in 1918. In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of the University of Southern California and the University of Idaho. The University of Montana joined the Conference in 1924, and in 1928, the PCC grew to 10 members with the addi on of UCLA. The Pacifi c Coast Conference competed as a 10-team league un l 1950, with the excep on of 1943-45, when World War II curtailed intercollegiate athle c compe on to a minimum. In 1950, Montana resigned from the Conference and joined the Mountain States Conference. The PCC con nued as a nine-team Conference through 1958. In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and a new Conference was formed-the Athle c Associa on of Western Universi es. Original AAWU membership consisted of California, Stanford, Southern California, UCLA, and Washington. Washington State became a member in 1962, while Oregon and Oregon State joined in 1964. In 1968, the name Pacifi c-8 Conference was adopted. Ten years later, on July 1, 1978, the University of Arizona and Arizona State University were admi ed and the Pacifi c-10 Conference became a reality. In 1986-87, the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women's sports. Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men's and 11 women's sports. Edwin N. Atherton was named the Conference's fi rst Commissioner in 1940. He has been succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt (1944), Thomas J. Hamilton (1959), Wiles Hallock (1971), Thomas C. Hansen (1983) and current Commissioner Larry Sco (2009). The Pac-12 Conference offi ces are located 25 miles east of San Francisco in Walnut Creek, Calif. "Conference of Champions" The Pac-12 Conference won eight NCAA tles during the 2012-13 academic year, the most by any conference. It marks the 12th me in the last 13 years-and the 47th me in 53 years-the Pac-12 has led or ed all conferences in NCAA championships won. The Pac-12's eight na onal championships came in the form of fi ve women's tles and three men's/combined crowns. Five diff erent Pac-12 ins tu ons claimed NCAA tles and USC was the only team in the country with three tles this year. Oregon also won a pair of na onal championships, joining only the Trojans, Princeton, North Carolina, Florida and Michigan to capture mul ple NCAA crowns this season. USC swept the men's and women's water polo tles, winning its fi h-straight men's crown. The Trojans were dominant en route to winning the women's golf tle, winning by a NCAA-record 24 strokes. The Ducks won their fi rst women's cross country championship since 1987, then took home the women's indoor track tle for the fourth-consecu ve year. Stanford reclaimed the women's tennis na onal championship, its fi rst since 2010, while Colorado won the skiing championship for the second me in three years. UCLA's win in baseball was the program's fi rst in the sport and the ins tu on's na on-leading 109th NCAA tle all- me. In addi on, Stanford clinched its unprecedented 19th-consecu ve Learfi eld Sports Directors' Cup, an award presented annually to the top intercollegiate athle c program in the country. The Cardinal has won at least one NCAA tle for 36-consecu ve years and is one of only two schools in the country, along with UCLA, to have won over 100 NCAA tles.
